Large Group of Dirt Bike and ATV Riders Captured on Film Riding Down Charlotte Streets

0

A large group of dirt bike and ATV riders were just captured on film riding down Brookshire Blvd. onto 277.

The video was recorded on Robbie Hodge’s dashcam. He first spotted the group on his way home from work as he was exiting I-85 onto Brookshire Blvd.

He followed the group down Brookshire Blvd. until he got off at exit 3A on 277 – the group continued illegally driving down 277;

According to a Reddit user, the group can often be seen meeting at at a mechanics shop on Independence Blvd, next to The Bean restaurant on Sunday afternoons;

via Google Maps

The Charlotte group appears to be following a nationwide trend of dirt bike and ATV riders on city streets. The movement has often been glorified in music videos and pop culture, and there’s even been an entire documentary produced about the infamous ’12 o’ clock boys’ of Baltimore (WARNING: Graphic Language);

Earlier this year, several CMPD officers chased down and arrested 3 people on stolen dirt bikes off West Trade St. in Northwest Charlotte.

CMPD is aware of this growing trend, but since the group often meets at different times, in different locations, they are hard to find – and since they can ride off the road into the woods when chased, they are extremely hard to catch.

If you see the group endangering traffic on Charlotte’s streets, please call CMPD at (704) 336-7600 or 911.

Jellyfish Have Just Been Spotted in Lake Norman (Video)

Jellyfish in Lake Norman?

It’s surprisingly true – you no longer have to travel 3 hours away to the beach to watch jellyfish swimming in the wild.

Statesville resident Tommy West uploaded this quick video of the jellyfish he spotted in Lake Norman last week – his post has since been shared over 1,183 times;

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the freshwater jellyfish, Craspedacusta sowerbii, or as the Chinese call it, the peach blossom fish, can be found in the Carolina lakes, including in Lake Norman, and Lake Wylie.

“The animal is native to China’s Yangtze River where it lives in the river’s pools and backwaters. It was first documented outside of China in the water lily tanks at London’s Regents Park in 1880 and today is commonly found in Europe, Asia, North and South America, and Australia.

The freshwater jellyfish can exist in one of five different body forms, with one, called the hydromedusa, resembling what we commonly think of as a jellyfish, albeit as small one, coming in at a half to two and half centimeters across. In late summer or early fall warm water temperatures trigger the animal to morph into the hydromedusa form, where it can be seen drifting in the water column. It can also live as a polyp on the river or lake bottom, or as what’s called a podocyst, a small group of cells encased in a hard shell – a form it takes to get through periods of cold or little food.”

They also note that the freshwater jellyfish found in Lake Norman and Wylie do have tentacles with stingers, but they aren’t strong enough to penetrate human skin.

Have you spotted any this summer?

Panthers Come Back Against The Falcons In Their 6th Win of The Season

Yesterday the Carolina Panthers took down the Atlanta Falcons in their 6th win of the season.

Things got a little dicey in the first 2 quarters, with the Falcons up 10-0 half-way through the second quarter, but in true cardiac cat fashion, the Panthers put together an impressive comeback.

2 15-yard penalties and Cam’s 24-yard pass to Funchess led to running back Christian McCaffrey’s first rushing touchdown of the season at the end of the second quarter.

On the next drive, Safety Mike Adams intercepted Matt Ryan and gave Cam the opportunity to score his fourth rushing touchdown of the season.

We added to our lead in the third quarter with 2 field goals from Graham Gano, putting the score at 20-10.

The Panthers improve their record to 6-3 on the season and 2-1 in the division – closer than ever to overtaking this season’s NFC South-leading New Orleans Saints.

The Panther’s will host the Dolphins next Monday night (Nov. 13th) in prime-time football.

Sonic Automotive’s new millennial-focused used car dealership, ‘EchoPark’, just closed on a 10-acre piece of land off Independence Blvd. at Charlotte’s former Coliseum Center, according to the register of deeds.

We first reported on the new dealership back in August when they were named as the anchor tenant of the newly branded ‘Coliseum Crossing’ devleopment.

Sonic’s new Echopark location will feature a massive pre-owned car lot, offices, interior showroom, repair facility, and state-of-the-art customer service center.

The remaining 8 acres of Coliseum Crossing will be developed into over 59,000 square feet of retail space and would connect to the neighboring Walmart.

During his Paris-themed wedding at Champagne Manor in Monroe, NC, David Pierce dressed his 9-month-old son as a French chauffeur and put him in a tiny RC car to drive the rings down the aisle. Apparently, the car was comfier than he realized.

After the video went viral online, it was featured on Kelly & Ryan and Good Morning America;

10 Worst Charlotte Restaurant Health Scores in October

0

charlotte-health-inspection-scoresEven though Charlotte’s restaurant selection continues to grow, so does our population, and some restaurants are taking advantage of this growing customer base by letting their health standards slide.

Some of the most common reasons for low scores were food handlers not washing their hands properly, contaminated food containers, and improper food temperatures (many restaurants are starting to use infrared thermometers to avoid this). You can see exactly what the inspectors look for on this blank copy of an inspection report.

These are the top 10 worst currently standing inspection scores in Mecklenburg County (some restaurants scored lower in October but were reinspected with higher scores before November 4th):

Kidde Issues Massive Recall on Fire Extinguishers: One Death Reported

0

Leading Fire Extinguisher maker Kidde has just issued a massive recall on all of their fire extinguishers with plastic handles due to failure to discharge and nozzle detachment.

According to the official recall, “The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.”

There have been nearly 400 reports of extinguishers malfunctioning resulting in 16 injuries and one death over the past few years.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the recall covers nearly 40 million Kidde extinguishers in 134 different models that were manufactured between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017, including models that were previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015. The extinguishers were sold in red, white and silver, and are either ABC- or BC-rated (you can see the full list of recalled model numbers here).

Consumers can visit Kidde’s recall page here to request a free replacement extinguisher made with metal parts.

Bojangles’ About To Test Their New Delivery Service At Select Locations in Charlotte

0

The Bojangles franchise is about to test a new delivery service around the Charlotte area.

The CEO told investors during this past week’s conference call that the company had “a challenging fiscal quarter” and would be testing delivery in 10 restaurants to help counter the sales declines. The goal of the new service would be to expand their customer base to reach more college students, hospital workers, and home offices, without taking away from in-store sales.

“If that’s incremental sales, then great, if that’s at nighttime and it’s something that we wouldn’t have got,” said Chief Executive Officer Clifton Rutledge. “But what would kill us is that if that same customer would be coming through our drive thru, that we’re now taking away from that, then that just doesn’t work. That puts you upside down on that.”

They decided to launch the new concept in Charlotte since we’re the home of their headquarters and since we have some of the best brand loyalty in the country.

“We believe conducting the test here in our hometown, a significant market for our brand and close to our support center, is important as we evaluate the results of the test,” said Chief Executive Officer Clifton Rutledge.

“Again, this will be a limited test focusing on gathering data and real-world learnings to help make the best informed decisions regarding future efforts towards delivery.”

They do currently have delivery options in Charlotte through several third-party services, including Postmates, Doordash and GrubHub, but these companies only reach about 13% of Bojangles stores nationwide.
Bojangles first started in Charlotte in 1977 and have since expanded to over 700 locations up and down the East Coast.
They plan to start testing their new delivery service by the end of this year or early next year.

Charlotte’s Bid For Amazon’s HQ2 Included 40 Letters and This 5-Minute-Long Video

0

Yesterday afternoon, leaders with the Charlotte Regional Partnership finally released the details about what was in Charlotte’s bid to bring Amazon’s $5 billion HQ2 to our city…kind of.

They weren’t willing to say how much they offered in financial incentives, or exactly which sites were purposed, but they did say the bid included a total of 21 proposed sites in various locations around Mecklenburg, York, Gaston, Cabarrus, Iredell and Rowan counties.

It also contained personal letters from 40 leading organizations in Charlotte, including from Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan and our former BofA CEO Hugh McColl Jr.

Along with all the paperwork, they sent this 5-minute-long video featuring spoken word by former news anchor and Hornets co-host Jacinda Jacobs and artists Carlos Robson and Boris “Bluz” Rogers;

The bid was sent in a custom laser-engraved wooden box, built by Charlotte’s Musser and Co., bubble wrap provided by Charlotte’s Sealed Air, and photography provided by Charlotte’s own Kent Smith;

What are your thoughts on our bid for Amazon’s HQ2?
