Smashburger Celebrating New Fort Mill Location by Giving Away Free Burgers

Smashburger is about to open their 4th Charlotte-area location in Fort Mill’s new Kingsley Town Center. To celebrate the restaurant’s newest location, they’ll be hosting special events in the days leading up to the Thursday, Dec. 7 grand opening. This includes three “Pay What You Want” events followed by a day where all guests will receive one free regular Classic Smashburger and 100 guests will win free Regular Classic Smashburgers for a year.

“We’re excited to be opening our fourth location in the Charlotte metro area,” said Steve Taylor, local Smashburger co-owner and 2012 recipient of Charlotte Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” award. “Kingsley is a promising location that is up-and-coming and we look forward to sharing delicious, smashed-to-order burgers with local residents. It’s going to be a great week of celebrating and we hope to see a lot of people come by to join the fun.”

The “Pay What You Want” events kick off Monday, Dec. 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Guests can pay as little as $1 for an entrée with 100 percent of the proceeds benefitting Ace & TJ’s Grin Kids, an organization that provides terminally ill and chronically disabled children a magical week-long, all-expenses-paid vacation to Disney World. Then, later that evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the “Pay What You Want” proceeds will go to local Orchard Park Elementary School.

The final “Pay What You Want” event is Tuesday, Dec. 5 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. benefitting Children’s Attention Home, an organization focused on providing a safe and nurturing home for abused and neglected children from birth to 21 years of age.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, the first 100 customers in line at the Kingsley grand opening will win free regular Classic Smashburgers for a year. Even after the first 100 guests have arrived, all guests that day will receive one free regular Classic Smashburger (per customer) between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Smashburger will officially open with regular prices and hours Thursday, Dec. 7. The store is located at 1329 Broadcloth Street in Fort Mill.

State-Wide Silver Alert Issued for Endangered 79-year-old with Dementia

The N.C. Center for Missing Persons has just issued a state-wide Silver Alert for a missing endangered man with dementia, Hubert G Newell.

Newell was last seen at 288 W Littlefield Rd., in Ayden, NC wearing a Redskins cap, beige jacket, and khaki pants.

He is a 5’9 white male, weighing around 200 lbs with brown/gray hair and hazel eyes.

Citizens are asked to be on the lookout for Hubert G Newell, who is believed to be suffering from dementia or some other cognitive impairment.

Charlotte Students Create Epic Music Video On The John Lennon Educational Bus

The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus recently stopped in Charlotte to give some students a hands-on experience with some of the most state-of-the-art audio and video recording equipment available.

Assisted by three on-board engineers, Charlotte’s Northwest School of the Arts students learned how to write, record, and produce original songs, music videos, documentaries, and live multi-camera video productions streamed to the web in real-time on October 17th, 2017.

It is highly unusual for the bus to stay put at one school for more than a day, but NWSA hosted the event from October 17th-18th, 2017.

On the first day, the Lennon Bus provided hundreds of NWSA students with the opportunity to tour the Bus and get hands on experience with the equipment found on board. Tours gave students an overview of what really goes on in a recording or video production facility that were led by the Lennon staff. Students learn about the history of the Bus and are introduced to the various production skills needed to produce projects on board. On the second day, six NWSA students had the opportunity to create and produce original songs and video projects. These students wrote the music and lyrics to a song, and then record, mix, shoot video, and made a full music video of their work.

The Most Discounted Charlotte Stores for Black Friday 2017

With Black Friday sales starting earlier and many retailers offering even deeper price cuts this year, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2017’s Best Stores for Black Friday.

WalletHub surveyed nearly 10,000 deals from 35 of the biggest U.S. retailers’ 2017 Black Friday ad scans to identify the stores offering the biggest discounts in various product categories such as “Appliances,” “Jewelry” and “Toys.”

The following are some highlights from the report:

Key Stats

  • Kohl’s has the highest overall discount rate at 66.32 percent, whereas Bass Pro Shops has the lowest at 20.83 percent.
  • The overall average discount for Black Friday is 37 percent. Consumers should aim for this discount amount or higher to avoid Black-Friday traps.
  • The “Apparel & Accessories” category has the biggest share of discounted items, 28.03 percent of all offers, whereas the “Consumer Packaged Goods” category has the smallest at 1.62 percent.

Amazon.com is the best online retailer for Black Friday deals – this year they’re running huge discounts on select products for 5 full days during “Black Friday Week“.

Police Launch New “Exchange Zones” Around Charlotte Region For Online Purchases

This weekend, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department officially opened 14 “Exchange Zones” in partnership with QuikTrip to provide people “safe zones” for buying and selling things from Craigslist, Facebook, and other online marketplaces.

Two parking spots will be painted red at 14 QuikTrip locations around the Charlotte region. They will be monitored by a 24/7 video camera, and officers will do periodic zone checks of each location, according to a CMPD press release.

“The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department partnered with Quick Trip and coordinated exchange zones to offer community members a safer alternative while conducting online transactions,” the release read. “It’s critical for community members to understand that there is always a potential threat to safety whenever unknown parties meet to conduct financial transactions, regardless of the location.”

They announced the finalized locations on their Facebook page;

Mount Holly also launched their own Exchange Zone in the parking lot of their police station;

CMPD is currently in talks with other local businesses to open more of these safe zones around the Charlotte region.

Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte Officially Begins Its Red Kettle Campaign

The Salvation Army has launched its iconic Red Kettle campaign, one of its most important fundraising efforts of the year. The Red Kettle campaign kicked off Nov. 17 and will run through Dec. 23. Kettles can be found in more than 50 locations around Charlotte throughout the season, with scores more throughout the metro area. For those who don’t carry cash, you can conveniently give to the Red Kettle campaign online, or text “KettleCLT” to 71777.

“The support we receive each Christmas through the Red Kettle campaign is critical to meeting the needs of people in our community throughout the year,” said Major Larry Broome, Area Commander of The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte. “The money raised through the Red Kettle effort helps people at Christmas time and supports our year-round programs to care for homeless women; mentor at-risk youth; and provide other critical services to those in need. A little change goes a long way to foster lasting transformation in our community.”

A kickoff celebration was held Friday morning at the corner of Trade & Tryon streets in Uptown Charlotte. It is a spot that is of special significance, as Independence Square was the location of the central Kettle House for a number of years, starting in the mid-1940s. At the celebration, longtime friend of The Salvation Army, No Limit Larry, from local radio station Power 98 spoke and made the ceremonial first contribution.  Members of the Charlotte Rotary Club were on hand to be the first bellringers of the season. The Charlotte Rotary, represented at the kickoff event by president Katie Tyler and other members, have been Red Kettle volunteer partners ringing at the uptown location since the mid-1990s.

Funding Cut From NC Fire Department After They Refused To Remove Confederate Flag

A debate over a Confederate flag at a North Carolina volunteer fire department building has finally come to a head. The county officially decided to cut funding to the department after they refused to remove the flag, according to KVUE.

The Uwharrie Volunteer Fire Department has been proudly flying the rebel flag above their Troy, NC fire station for years. Their building is privately owned, but they have been receiving public funds their fire trucks and other equipment.

The county recently sent the Uwharrie Fire Department a letter that read, “The Montgomery County Board of Commissioners respectfully asks the volunteers of the Uwharrie Fire Department to remove the Confederate Flag from the building for which they are defacto stewards. We ask you to do so, out of respect for the institution you have so admirably volunteered to serve.”

After the volunteer fire department decided to continue to fly the flag, the county made the move to cut their funding.

The Board of Commissioners now say that the firefighters will only receive money for fuel and maintenance for two county-owned fire trucks going forward. They will be missing out on their regular $20,000 equipment check and their new $400,000 fire truck.

FBI Stepping Up Efforts To Find Missing 20-Year-Old in NC Town Where 3 Others Found Dead

The FBI is now stepping up their efforts to find 20-year-old Abby Lynn Patterson, who was first reported missing last month.

According to Lumberton Police, 20-year-old Abby Patterson told her mother she’d return in an hour before leaving the family home on the morning of September 5th, she has not been heard from since.

The FBI just released this updated flyer and is asking the public to spread the word;

Abby is now the 4th woman who went missing from the same town where 3 other missing women’s remains were found earlier this year.

The bodies of Christina Bennett, 32, and Rhonda Jones, 36, were both discovered April 18. Police found the body of Megan Oxendine, 28, on June 3 in Lumberton, NC. Authorities found each of the three bodies in a three-block area of Lumberton.

“At this point we don’t know if there’s a connection,” Lumberton Police Chief Michael McNeill said of the 4 women. Local police and the FBI are now assuming that Abby is still alive.

“We’re soliciting help from the community,” Cheif McNeill told Fox News. “Someone out there has information we need.”

Family and friends of Patterson are offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to her being found.

Abby Patterson is described as 5-foot-7 and 140 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She has a bird tattoo on her shoulder and a birthmark on the back of her left thigh.

Abby was last seen wearing brown shorts and a white shirt.

Two People Were Shot at Church During Church Shooting Discussion

Two people were accidentally shot in a Tennessee church this past Thursday during a discussion about church shootings, according to the Tellico Plains Police Department.

Several elders of The First United Methodist Church in Tellico Plains met yesterday afternoon at around 1 p.m. to discuss the Texas shooting and what could be done about protection in the church. During the discussion, someone asked if anyone brought a gun to their church.

One man said that he carries his gun everywhere he goes. He pulled out his .380 caliber Ruger, emptied the magazine and chamber, and then passed it around.

Once the gun came back around the circle, the man put the magazine back in, cocked the chamber, and then accidentally squeezed the trigger. The gun went off, hitting the man in the hand and his wife in the abdomen, according to police.

Both shooting victims were rushed to UT Medical Center by helicopter for non-life threatening injuries. Their names have not been released.

Immediately after the incident, several schools in the area were put on lockdown, which was lifted once the scene was cleared.

Public Gives Overwhelming Approval For New Rail Lines To Lake Norman and Gaston County

Yesterday the city of Charlotte concluded the last of their 10 community engagement meetings for the Lynx Red Line and Lynx West Corridor studies.

Those that attended the meeting had an overwhelmingly positive opinion about both new rail lines, and many even suggested that the Lynx West Corridor should be extended past the airport into Gaston County.

Most of the questioning revolved around “when” the transit corridors would be developed rather than “if” or “why” they should be. The biggest obstacle that the city now faces is funding, as the two new lines are estimated to cost between $5-$7 billion.

CATS and its consulting partners hope to present a summary of the 10 community meetings by the Spring of 2018, and potentially also the designs for the new Lynx Silver Line (down to Matthews), if they can find enough funding.

CATS expects to finalize their studies and recommendations for the north and west Lynx lines by late 2018.
