Lancaster Man Arrested After Women Dies and Others Found Captive In His Basement

A deeply disturbing case has emerged in Lancaster County, where a local pastor’s son stands accused of imprisoning multiple individuals in his basement, where one woman reportedly died. Authorities allege the crimes include false imprisonment, financial exploitation, and physical abuse, all carried out over an extended period.

Discovery of a Death Sparks Investigation

The investigation began in July when deputies responded to an unattended death at a home in Lancaster. The deceased woman was later confirmed to have been one of several individuals allegedly held captive in the basement by 35-year-old Donnie Ray Birchfield Jr..

His father, Pastor Donnie Birchfield, leads Friendship Baptist Church in Lancaster.

Victims Held Against Their Will

According to arrest warrants and investigators, Birchfield Jr. allegedly confined at least four people in his basement, depriving them of basic needs like food and medical attention. One male victim was reportedly denied sustenance and medical care and not permitted to leave the property.

Investigators say Birchfield kept his girlfriend captive as well, routinely strangling her during violent assaults. She told police he threatened her life and claimed to have prior knowledge of disposing of bodies.

Financial Exploitation of Vulnerable Adults

Authorities also uncovered widespread financial abuse. Birchfield allegedly used the victims’ bank and credit cards for personal expenses, including Walmart shopping sprees and credit card payments. One couple’s accounts were reportedly drained of more than $11,800, and at least $2,000 was spent at Walmart using stolen cards.

Criminal Charges and Ongoing Investigation

Birchfield faces a growing list of charges, including:

  • False imprisonment

  • Neglect of a vulnerable adult

  • Financial exploitation

  • Domestic violence

He remains in custody at the Lancaster County Detention Center under a $150,000 bond. The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office is now prosecuting the case. Officials are awaiting a pathologist’s report that could result in additional charges related to the woman’s death.

Charlotte just celebrated the official grand opening of The River District, its 1,200-acre master-planned community in West Charlotte.  

More than a decade in the making, the celebration brought together homebuilders, local vendors, and community members for a day of live music, food trucks, raffles, and tours. In partnership with The River District’s multifamily community, NOVEL River District, and its four homebuilders David Weekley Homes, DRB Homes, Saussy Burbank, and Toll Brothers, Crescent Communities offered visitors a first glimpse into its vision: “the soul of the city in the heart of nature.”  

“This groundbreaking marks the beginning of a place where the energy of city life flows seamlessly into the beauty of the natural landscape,” said Rainer Ficken, Senior Managing Director of The River District. “From day one, we’ve been intentional about building lasting partnerships with organizations like the Catawba Lands Conservancy, the Catawba Riverkeeper, and Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation. In August, The River District welcomed its first resident to a David Weekley-designed single-family home in Westrow, the community’s 70-acre town center that will feature sidewalks connected to tree-lined streets and storefronts. Additional single-family homes and townhomes in Westrow are now under construction and available for purchase. 

Earlier this month, Crescent Communities closed on its second set of 140 single-family lots in its Basswood neighborhood, with construction to begin later this year. Additionally, Crescent kicked off construction on Forge Village in Westrow, which will include a playground, a two-acre working farm, a lawn pavilion for events, and a building with a café and store selling produce from the farm. 

The community also features NOVEL River District, a 318-unit multifamily development under Crescent Communities’ Class A NOVEL brand offering world-class amenities, engaging resident programming and events, and contemporary design. The initial builder phase includes more than 260 lots, with long-term plans for up to 2,300 single-family homes and 2,350 multifamily residential units. FDA Issues Second Major Recall After Radioactive Cesium-137 Detected in Shrimp Sent To Carolinas

Nearly 85,000 bags of frozen shrimp sold at Kroger and affiliated grocery chains across the Carolinas and 32 other states have been recalled due to potential contamination with radioactive Cesium-137, a highly toxic substance that increases cancer risk.

According to the FDA, testing revealed traces of the radioactive isotope in shrimp sourced from Indonesian processor PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods). While no contaminated shrimp has been confirmed as sold in the U.S., the FDA says some products from the same supplier may still pose a health risk.

The shrimp was sold between June 12 and September 17 at Kroger and affiliate chains including Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Smith’s, Food 4 Less, and Mariano’s in 34 states, including SC, GA, NC, AL, TX, CA, and OH.

Health Risks of Cesium-137

Cesium-137 is a man-made radioactive isotope commonly released during nuclear accidents. According to the FDA, low-dose, long-term exposure through food or water may cause DNA damage and raise the risk of certain cancers.

Although no illnesses have been reported, the FDA warns consumers not to consume the affected shrimp. Instead, they should dispose of it safely or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

A major new development is breaking ground on October 1 that could reshape the booming Tega Cay area between Lake Wylie and Fort Mill.

Charlotte Living Realty Group and Kinger Development Group announced this week that they will break ground on The Grove at 1195 Stonecrest Blvd., a $250 million mixed-use community spanning 56 acres.

The New Grove development will feature:

  • 150 homes and townhomes

  • 225 apartments

  • Over 100,000 square feet of commercial space

The project is being developed in partnership with Latitude 35 Design Group and will include a new walkable “Main Street,” with sprawling outdoor patios, fountains, and winding sidewalks.

First Phase Opens in 2026

Construction will begin on the western portion of the site, between Dam Road and Stonecrest Boulevard. The first phase, expected to open in 2026, includes:

  • A local brewery

  • A food hall

  • Multiple restaurants

  • A large outdoor plaza

The Grove’s mix of apartments above retail, public parks, and gathering spaces aims to boost economic development while enhancing community life.

A North Carolina man is behind bars after leading deputies on one of the most dangerous and extreme high-speed chases in recent memory — reaching a staggering estimated 180 miles per hour on I-795 before being apprehended. The Saturday morning pursuit shocked even veteran officers involved in the weekend enforcement operation aimed at cracking down on reckless and impaired driving.

According to the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office, deputies with the Crash Reduction Team (CRT) attempted to pull over a motorcycle traveling at an extremely high rate of speed. Instead of stopping, the rider accelerated to 180 mph, weaving through lanes and pushing the limits of the bike.

The suspect, identified as Christopher Pennington of Kenly, fled through rural stretches of I-795, forcing officers into a tense and dangerous pursuit. As the chase neared Goldsborothe motorcycle suddenly experienced mechanical failure, came to a stop, and caught on fire.

Deputies arrested Pennington without incident and discovered a concealed firearm on him during the felony takedown. He now faces multiple charges, including:

  • Additional traffic violations

The largest professional opera company in the Carolinas – has announced programming for its upcoming 76th season with an ambitious lineup of grand operas, special concerts, philanthropic events, and community initiatives. Tickets are now available here. 

Expanding on its “Opera for All” theme, general director Dr. Shanté Williams and new artistic director/deputy general director Claudio Ferri are shaping the new season to merge tradition with innovation and celebrate diverse voices and stories in the opera world. 

“We’re excited to offer an amazing lineup of programming and events that spotlight not only what we’re bringing to the stage but also how Opera Carolina is connecting in the community,” Dr. Shanté Williams said. “Audiences can expect powerhouse performances, compelling stories, and a lot of fun from notable voices from opera houses around the world alongside our group of impressive local talent and upcoming artists.” 

The 2025-26 season kicks off with two special events in November. Following last year’s success of its inaugural A Night to Remember, Opera Carolina will return to the Belk Theater on Nov. 1 for the event, which pays tribute to Puccini’s heroines, in partnership with the Puccini Festival of Torre del Lago. Then, the company will team up with Mint Museum Uptown to host its first-ever 9/11 Commemorative Concert on Nov. 9 and honor the victims with a featured performance of Pergolesi’s popular “Stabat Mater.” 

Opera Carolina will bring three timeless masterpieces to the main stage next season. 

  • Maestro Stefano Vignati, Music Director and Principal Conductor of Opera Carolina, will open the season with Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, both by Giacomo Puccini, in January 2026. Grammy Award-winning singer Latonia Moore leads the cast along with well-known Italian voices Daniela Barcellona, Natale De Carolis, and Eric Ferring. 
  • Denyce Graves returns to Charlotte to perform the title role and serve as director of Gian Carlo Menotti’s gripping drama The Medium, scheduled for April 2026. 
  • Closing out the season is the anticipated production ofThe Magic Flute. This co-production with Italy-based Teatro Sociale di Como will revive its collaboration with the International Lyric Academy and feature an all-star cast alongside emerging international talents when it hits the stage at Central Piedmont Community College’s Halton Theater in June 2026. 

The organization’s signature fundraiser, Bella Notte, will take on a new look as it moves to New Year’s Eve, promising glamour, breathtaking performances, and a few surprises. 

Additionally, The Bel Canto Incanto Concert Series features opera’s biggest and brightest singers in the industry today. The Series will host a roster of visitors from other acclaimed opera houses will include two of the brightest stars in today’s opera world – Erin Morley and Lawrence Brownlee – who will grace the Knight Theater stage on May 2, 2026, with their Golden Age Concert for the “Bel Canto Incanto series.” 

Lift Every Voice and Sing, a concert series celebrating the contributions of Black composers and artists in Charlotte’s historic and newly restored Carolina Theater.

The Carolina Panthers stunned the NFL Sunday with a record-shattering 30–0 shutout against the Atlanta Falcons—one of the most complete performances in franchise history.
