The Charlotte-area’s largest beach just announced that it will stay closed indefinitely due to worsening drought conditions.
County staff say they will continue monitoring water levels and shoreline conditions to determine when the beach might be able to be safely reopened.
While the beach and swimming area remain closed, other portions of the 43-acre park will stay open to the public, including:
- Boat launch and docks
- Playground
- Picnic shelters
- Nature trails
- Fishing pier
- Dog park
- Volleyball court
The Ramsey Creek boat launch remains operational despite the beach closure.
The shutdown comes as drought conditions continue impacting Lake Norman and the broader Catawba-Wateree River Basin. Falling water levels have already exposed shorelines, submerged debris, and shallow boat ramps across the region.
Earlier this week, Charlotte-area water restrictions also took effect as officials warned residents to reduce non-essential water use.
Ramsey Creek Beach, located in Cornelius off Nantz Road, typically serves as one of the few public swimming beaches on Lake Norman and draws large crowds during holiday weekends and summer months.
Mecklenburg County has not announced a reopening date for the swim area.
