SC County Becomes First in State to Ban Flock Cameras and Mass Surveillance

Last night, a SC County became the first in the state to formally ban mass surveillance technology, including all AI-powered Flock cameras.

The “Protection from Mass Surveillance” ordinance passed Oconee County Council with one member opposed. A packed crowd attended the meeting.

Flock cameras are automated license plate readers that can capture vehicle plates, locations and timestamps and have faced a wave of scrutiny, vandalism, and abuse since first introduced.

If finalized, the new ordinance would prevent county funds from paying for Flock cameras and similar mass surveillance systems, as well as prohibit those systems from being placed on county-owned roads and property.

The final vote is scheduled for Sept. 15.
