FDA Issues Highest-Level Recall for Frozen Berries Sold at Publix Across the Carolinas

Publix shoppers across the Carolinas are being urged to check their freezers after the FDA upgraded a frozen berry recall. Federal officials now classify the products at their highest health risk level amid an E. coli outbreak.

The FDA upgraded the recall to Class I, meaning exposure could potentially cause serious health consequences or death.

Publix initially recalled GreenWise Organic Blueberries in July. The recall later expanded to four frozen blueberry and mixed berry products.

The affected berries were sold at Publix stores across North Carolina and South Carolina, along with six other states.

Federal officials have identified at least 12 E. coli cases connected to the outbreak investigation. No deaths have been reported.

Recalled Publix Products

  • GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 10-ounce — UPC 41415-06453
  • GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 48-ounce — UPC 41415-12053
  • GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 10-ounce — UPC 41415-06753
  • GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 48-ounce — UPC 41415-12153

All affected products have best-by dates before Feb. 9, 2028.

Consumers should not eat the recalled berries. They should throw them away or return them to Publix for a full refund.

E. coli can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face greater risks.

The recall directly affects the Charlotte region, where Publix operates numerous stores across both Carolinas.
