North Carolina’s IEI Receives Major Grant To Increase Internet Access Across Our State

0

The Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) at NC State University is pleased to announce it has received a $225,000 grant from the SECU Foundation to support its Building a New Digital Economy in NC (BAND-NC) initiative. The program, launched in June 2020, is designed to increase the number of people with internet in their homes with the goal of making North Carolina the first state in the nation where every county has a digital inclusion plan in place. The SECU Foundation joins numerous state and local funders investing in communities to ensure NC is “first in digital inclusion.” The funding will specifically support capacity building for digital inclusion in the Northeastern, Northwestern and Sandhills regions of North Carolina.

“Higher broadband adoption rates are closely linked to increased economic success,” said Leslie Boney, Director of the Institute for Emerging Issues. “This investment gives us a chance to work with counties in regions lagging behind—to increase digital literacy and the number of homes using broadband for education, work and health.”

Working closely with the NC Broadband Infrastructure Office (BIO), BAND-NC has provided mini-grants to communities across the state that are implementing digital inclusion plans, beginning a digital inclusion planning process, or are looking to meet immediate digital needs.

“In today’s environment, the internet and supported devices such as computers and cellphones are vital to how we engage with others, learn, work, and know what’s going on in our local communities and the world,” said Jama Campbell, Executive Director of the SECU Foundation. “BAND-NC will help fill the gap for those with little or no access to internet services, especially in rural or underserved areas of our state.  SECU Foundation is proud to help the Institute for Emerging Issues move forward with great success to bring digital equity to all 100 counties of our state.”

COVID-19 has exposed the digital divide in North Carolina and its consequences for all households. Students and adults who don’t have access to the internet, don’t have a computer or laptop, or don’t know how to use them are struggling to compete in an increasingly digital economy. IEI’s BAND-NC initiative works alongside communities across NC to create opportunities for everyone to access and be able to use affordable internet and devices.

“Building capacity for digital inclusion is imperative for our economic future. We look forward to working with leaders in the Northeast, Northwest and Sandhills to embark on this important work together,” says Maggie Woods, BAND-NC Director.

The Best Slots 2021. How to Choose a Slot Machine in an Online Casino

0

If you intend to win more than you lose, you should consider several options. First is betting on popular sports, with bookmakers such as 22Bet KE. The second is to try slot machines. Today, we’ll tell you what points you need to pay attention to before you start playing and how it will help you in the game.

Theoretical Returns

This is the name given to a slot’s return, simply put – how much money it is guaranteed to give players back for a long-playing session. Simply put, if you play with this machine for a long time, it will somehow give you back most of the money you spent on the game.

Volatility

This parameter depends on the frequency of formation of winning combinations. And at the same time and the size of the payouts. Low volatility means that winning combinations will fall out frequently, but the payout ratio will be low. With high volatility the situation will change – you will win less often, but the winnings will be higher.

Bonuses

In modern slot machines, there are many bonuses. From Freespins (when you do not need to bet to play a bonus round) to Gamble, which allows you to double your winnings after a successful round.

Choose the slot machines with the right set of features for you to ensure maximum enjoyment of the game and minimize the risks.

The Most Popular Online Slots in 2021

Let’s list a few of the popular slots that online casino players are talking about the most right now.

1429 Uncharted

The most popular slot machine from the studio Thunderkick, which has an unusually high rate of theoretical return – as much as 98.6%! Most often, this slot at online casinos has up to 50 free spins. And the volatility of this slot is at an average level. The chances of big wins are not high, but long and enjoy playing and stay “with their own” you are likely to succeed.

Starburst

Popular slot from the company – this is a real machine from the company NetEnt, which will impress any player, and the slot is not the first year, but its popularity has no thought to decline. There are five reels and 20 lines for betting, and the theoretical return rate is an impressive 96.1%.

The bonus symbol of the machine – wild, which, after a roll, stretches across the drum, complements the other symbols and triggers respin.

Age of Asgard

The gaining popularity slot has five reels and 50 lines for betting. Plus a lot of extra features that make the game fun and increase the chances of winning.

Wild Toro. An interesting slot with five reels with four lines of symbols. There are special characters that give the player free re-spins. The maximum payout in the game is 2250 initial bets!

And a Little Advice on the Game

  • We recommend choosing the minimum bet to play in free mode and real credits. So you will save a lot of money and along the way learn this strategy. In the future, you can gradually increase the bets.
  • We recommend choosing 5-10 favorite slot machines with a good percentage of payouts and testing them. If all of these games do not show the desired result in free mode, it is better to transfer the real game session to another time or choose a different manufacturer (Microgaming or NYX).
  • One of the main factors influencing the number of maximum winnings is the amount of money in the account and its ratio to the current bet. Of course, you can win with a small amount of money in the account, but we recommend having a balance of at least 200 bets (depending on the length of the slot cycle).  As long as the institutions do not charge players a commission for deposit and withdrawal of funds, it does not cost anything.
  • We recommend combining the strategy of testing slots in free mode with the benefits of bonus programs.

Will NC Become a Swing State?

0

There are very few people out there who are willing to call presidential elections with absolute certainty. However, with America’s electoral system the way it is, we can often call how many of the state elections will go. Red states will go for the Republican Party, blue ones for the Democrats.

But then there is the elusive swing state – a state that is neither blue nor red and could go either way. Could we North Carolinians be voting in a swing state for the next presidential election?

While no one can say with certainty exactly how the people of North Carolina will vote one year from now, much less three years from now, experts are noticing trends that are putting North Carolina on the map as a purple state. Let’s take a closer look at those trends and whether they will continue.

Population Changes

The world has changed a lot in the last 20 or so years. But it’s not just the world around North Carolina that is changing how the state votes. It’s also about how the people of North Carolina have changed.

Knowing who makes up a bigger portion of the population is a key part of understanding voting patterns. After all, voters who learn about the world from a progressive news outlet are going to vote differently from people who purely get their news from conservative outlets.

So, what does the current electorate look like now and how will that change? Here’s what you need to know.

Population Growth

In the last 20 years, North Carolina’s population has been on a steady increase and is the fifth-fastest growing state. This isn’t because people are having more children. On the contrary, the birth rate is down. Instead, migration is the driving factor.

As people come to North Carolina for its booming industry, particularly in the pharmaceutical field, we have more newcomers to the state who might think and vote a little differently than those who have been here their entire lives.

Demographic Shifts

Along with population growth, what the population looks like is changing. There are two things to note about the changing demographics:

  • More people are living in urban areas.
  • There is a larger percentage of non-white people.

As the population becomes located in cities and more ethnically diverse, there are likely to be more votes for the Democrats as these populations tend to vote blue. If these trends continue, Democrats may gain a stronger foothold in the state, turning it purple if not blue.

However, these are not a given. Those who live in cities or are not white are not guaranteed to vote for the Democratic Party. Even more important, they are not guaranteed to vote at all. These trends would need to continue and Democrats would need to appeal to voters to bring in more blue votes.

Political Divisiveness

Another factor driving blue votes is that the Democrats are becoming more liberal.

Decades ago, the Republican Party was able to gain votes from some moderate Democratic voters who might swing their vote. But with social media driving Republicans to be more conservative and Democrats to be more liberal, there is less of a question as to how registered voters would choose a candidate when they vote.

And with more Democrats than Republicans in the state, perhaps Democrats can use this to their advantage and win over the independent voters.

North Carolina on the National Stage

North Carolina went blue in 2008 for Obama but has voted red in the subsequent three presidential elections. But with changing demographics, the state could become a more contentious swing state in coming election cycles. Unfortunately, no one can tell the future, so all we can do is wait and watch.

NCDEQ Suing Colonial Pipeline Over 1.2 Million Gallon Spill in Huntersville

0

Over a year after the largest American gas spill in decades, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) has now filed a lawsuit in the Mecklenburg Court system to force the $8 billion company to comply.

The suit claims that Colonial hasn’t followed through with what its plans to assess and cleanup the massive spill.

In a press release, NCDEQ Secretary Elizabeth S. Biser noted, “Colonial owes it to the people of North Carolina to cooperate with DEQ and be forthcoming with the information required by our statutes, starting with an accurate estimate of how much fuel was released into the environment.”

The spill was first detected on August 14th coming from a ruptured Colonial Pipeline gas line near Huntersville’s Oehler Nature Preserve. The liquid petroleum gas line that ruptured runs 5,550-miles from Texas, through the southern states, to New Jersey.

In days following the Aug. 14, spill, Colonial said they believed that 63,000 gallons had spilled into the surrounding Mecklenburg County nature preserve, but they soon adjusted that figure to 272,000 gallons.

Cleanup efforts have since revealed that even their 272,000-gallon estimate was way off.

According to their report, “a total of 50 vacuum enhanced recovery wells have been installed within the release area. Pneumatic recovery pumps have been placed in the wells and vacuum is applied to the wells to enhance recovery. As of January 16, 2021, approximately 569,003 gallons of gasoline-free product and approximately 217,959 gallons of petroleum contact water have been recovered from the recovery well network.”

The company has installed a total of 81 groundwater monitoring wells near the location of the spill, and while they say they have not detected any petroleum products “laboratory reporting limits”, the well data does show significant contamination of at least 20 chemicals in the water, many of which are dangerous carcinogens.

Reported compounds found in groundwater monitoring stations. ‘2L’ refers to legally enforceable standards.

Colonial has said it has spent at least $10 million on the cleanup effort so far.

North Carolina Native Launches New Record Label

0

Jordan King, also known as DerriQ, has just launched a new record label from his home state of North Carolina – We In Action (WIA) Entertainment.

Part of the company plan is to become one of the leading record labels in North Carolina and compete with entertainment business leaders in the United States and on the global stage.

Growing up in a church-raised home with his grandmother, DerriQ was 3 years old when he first found his love for music when introduced to the drums at church.

“Sometimes, I think about that little boy on the back of the church pews with broken-off fan handles and using them as drumsticks,” DerriQ said. “I knew right then I would be a drummer. But I never imagined having my label.”

The goal of WIA is to work in tandem with established and upcoming artists. The label wants to support independent artists who seek to make their dreams a reality. WIA offers exceptional services from a highly experienced team of producers, engineers, photographers, and videographers to help artists climb up the ladder of success.

“We will exceed our clients’ expectations whenever they contract with our label and will fulfill their musical needs,” DerriQ said. “At We In Action Ent., we live by our values A.C.T.I.O.N-Accomplishments, Community, Trustworthiness, Innovation, Opportunity, Networking, and our organizational motto, ‘Always Forward, Never Backwards.’ We give you that musically inclined feel, high-quality videos, confidence, and satisfaction at all times by the protection of our resources.”

Tips to Take Care of Your Dog During Winter

0

As the winter arrives, it’s worth thinking about all of the strategies you can use to safeguard your beloved pets. Distinct breeds of dogs and cats have different reactions to cooler temperatures. Some breeds, like German Shepherds, enjoy rolling about in the winter, while smaller species, such as Chihuahuas enjoy burrowing under thick blankets for long periods during the winter. Here are the tips to take care of your dog during the winter.

1. When going for walks, wrap them up

Even though it is warm and cozy indoors, your dog needs frequent walks, rain, or shine. When going on a stroll, it’s essential to ensure your four-legged companions are adequately protected from the elements. If you have an exceptionally well-furred dog, including a Greyhound or a Staffie, be sure to put a puppy sweater on them whenever going outside in the cold.

You may use a winter sweater to wear your animals, and always make sure that they are comfortable, not too tight, and not too loose. Remember that the purpose is to protect them from the freezing temperature. You can choose stunning dog hoodies and gifts for pets.

2. Examine their toes for the presence of snow

After your dog has gone outdoors, check their paws and make sure they are dehydrated. With long-haired puppies, this is particularly crucial since snow may collect underneath their toes and harden into ice chunks, which can be pretty unpleasant for the dog. Whether they are amenable, you might cut the thick locks between your dog’s feet to prevent this from happening in the first place.

Especially with the winter in Charlotte, it is expected that if your pet’s paws are damp after being outdoors, be sure to wipe them immediately. Use a moist towel to clean your dog’s paws and tummy to remove any dust, snow, or pollutants that may have accumulated there. Make sure to pay special attention to their furry paws and the space between their toes.  You may provide them with an additional layer of protection when using coconut oil or similar paw waterproof coating on their hairy feet before letting them out into the yard.

3. Limit your dogs’ exposure to the elements to keep them warm.

It may seem to be basic sense, yet it is crucial to adhere to. It is not recommended for any particular breed to spend a significant amount of time outdoors during the severe winter days in Charlotte, including Alaskan dogs. A brief 20-minute stroll is plenty for both workout and toilet breaks.

According to the air temperature chills, you may want to raise or drop this. If it’s frigid outside, make sure your dog goes out to relieve himself before returning inside as quickly as possible. As a last note, please remind your dog walker that it is perfectly fine to miss a lengthy stroll for the day if the weather is too chilly outdoors.

4. Know the Hazardous symptoms

Both of you should seek shelter promptly if you observe any of these signs while out in the cold. These might be signs of dehydration or hypothermia, so bring them indoors as soon as possible. The symptoms are as follows:

  • The dog whines or behaves in a worried or agitated manner
  • He can’t seem to stop shivering.
  • He looks weak.
  • He starts hunting for areas to borrow warmth as soon as possible.

Once you’ve brought your dog inside, cover him in blankets and contact the veterinarian if possible. This is the basic information that every animal lover should be aware of. Make sure to share your pet’s facts with anybody who could be looking after your furry personal companions, such as pet sitters, colleagues, relatives, and coworkers.

5. Increase the number of nutrients of your pet

Simply increasing the amount of fat and protein in your best buddy’s diet can ensure that their fur coats remain more substantial and more abundant. The greater the amount of fur they have, the hotter they will be! Charlotte’s winter temperature requires additional water and food because most dogs burn much more energy to remain warm.

It requires a lot of effort to raise one’s core temperature! To keep them adequately “charged up,” increase the number of times and quantities they are given each day. Please make sure that their pet carer is informed of the feeding modifications.

6. Don’t abandon them in the car unattended

When it’s hot outdoors, you know not to abandon your dog in the vehicle, which is more accurate when it’s hot inside. The same is the case for freezing temperatures. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of how rapidly automobiles may cool off when it is frigid outdoors. Very quickly, the environment takes on the characteristics of a refrigerator.

Even if it’s just for a brief amount of time, your dog will most certainly be quite uncomfortable, and it might have a significant impact on their health. So continue to keep the dogs with you, where they will be secure and comfortable.

7. Refrain from using the clippers

Your dog’s or cat’s coat gives an astonishing amount of insulation against the elements. Be careful not to trim them off to their naked skin throughout the colder months of the year. If your pet’s coat has to be trimmed, be sure not to cut the covering of fur on the underside so that they can stay warm appropriately.

8. Provide Comfortable Alternatives

Similar to how much you like snuggling up with a good, thick blanket or couch, your pet enjoys it as well! So, this wintertime, provide your Charlotte dogs with a comfy bed, pillow, or comforter to make them last longer in their relaxed state. As a reminder, make sure to build these areas distant from every shock in your house and post a sign for the caregiver to add additional covers if necessary, particularly for little animals. Cathedral of Our Lady of ParisCycle “Trilogy of Rock”
