The Anne Springs Close Greenway will host the highly anticipated Winter Holiday Market this weekend. Shoppers may preview the list of vendors prior to the Dec. 3 event at the Greenway Gateway. Come prepared to complete your holiday shopping list!

The Greenway, which has hosted craft fair markets for more than two decades, now holds three artisan markets annually in the spring, fall and winter. During this time, the Greenway has expanded its vendor guidelines to include more local businesses, artists and entrepreneurs. Categories include items ranging from baskets and jewelry to fine art, woodworking and ceramics. A number of food purveyors will also be in attendance.

“Shopping local vendors has become a much loved pastime for not just Greenway members, but visitors from around the region,” says Sara Lee, Operations Assistant Director at the Anne Springs Close Greenway. “We welcome thousands of visitors each year to our artisan markets and we are excited to broaden our scope of vendors to include more of what our attendees want and ensuring an excellent variety of items and price points.”

The Winter Holiday Market will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Anne Springs Close Greenway Gateway Lawn (2570 Lake Haigler Drive, Fort Mill). Tickets for the market are $6 per adult, ages 5-12 $4, ages 4 and younger free and are available at the gate. Vendors are open from 9am to 4pm, with the Gateway Canteen providing food and beverages for purchase. Admission is waived for Greenway members. Parking is $5 per car.

Charlotte New Year’s Day 5K is Running in the Right Direction

The Charlotte New Year’s Day 5K is gearing up for participants to kick off the new year on the right foot! This first and festive 5K of the year is designed for friends, family and community members to bring their courageous spirit to the scenic greenway trails in University City. The race will end with awards and a New Year’s Day celebration.

New this year, the third annual Charlotte New Year’s Day 5K aims to become zero waste and will feature minimal to no waste products. Participants will begin the race at 10 a.m. on January 1, 2023 at The Shoppes at University Place. The route will cover Mallard, Barton, and Tobe Creek Greenways and finish off strong at Robert D. Snyder Road on the campus of UNC Charlotte.

“One of our New Year’s goals is to reduce our carbon footprint from events. We are excited to work with Envision Charlotte to help us reach our vision of zero waste for future events,” said University City Partners Interim Executive Director Tobe Holmes. “This includes the introduction of compostable food supplies, virtual swag bags, modified water stations, and a few other elements that will allow participants to support our sustainability efforts.”

The annual race welcomes runners, walkers and participants of all levels. It is a family-friendly event that will include food, music and fun. Children may participate in the race, and spectators are welcome to cheer on runners and enjoy the post-race festivities. Volunteers are also welcome and vital to making the celebration a success. Each volunteer will receive an official Charlotte NYD5K race shirt (while supplies last) and can enjoy a New Year’s brunch and beer or mimosa (21+) after their shift is over. Somehow the post-Rhule, post-McCaffrey, post-Anderson Panthers have found themselves on somewhat of a roll, having now gone 3-3 (3-0 at home) since firing their head coach, trading away their star running back and receiver, and having non-stop drama at the starting QB slot.

Yesterday the Panthers got payback against their 2016 Super Bowl rivals with a 25-15 victory over the Broncos in Uptown Charlotte.

Interim head coach Steve Wilks is now undefeated at home (3-0) and is continuing to strengthen our defense while adding some more strength to our offence.

Sam Darnold started his first game of the season as QB, completing 11 out of 19 throws for 164 yards with a touchdown. DJ Moore was his primary target, finishing the game with 103 receiving yards.

In the running game, D’Onta Foreman brought in 113 yards on 24 carries and Chuba Hubbard ran for 65 yards over 17 attempts.

Some singles are closer to a happily ever after than they think, but it depends on where they live. To determine where singles have the highest chance of finding love, WalletHub compared more than 120 U.S. cities across 36 key indicators of dating-friendliness. The data set ranges from the share of the population that is single to the number of online dating opportunities to the average price for a two-person meal.

Charlotte was ranked as the #116 best cities for singles in America, lower than even Augusta, GA (#110) and Nashville, TN (#103).

The new 2022-23 Farmers Almanac has just been released and reads; “The first bite of winter should come earlier than last year’s. December 2022 looks stormy and cold nationwide with an active storm pattern developing and hanging around for most of the season over the eastern half of the country.

1) The first week of January in the Rockies and across the Plains. During this time, we see good potential for heavy snow that may reach as far south as Texas and Oklahoma, followed by a sweep of bitterly cold air. 

2) January 16-23, we’ll raise another red flag for bouts of heavy rain and snow across the eastern two-thirds of the country followed by what might be one of the coldest outbreaks of arctic air we have seen in several years – 40 degrees below zero.”

While the almanac certainly has good news for snow lovers, it’s bad news for those who dread the winter. “According to our long-range outlook, spring will be slow to start with winter lingering until April.”
