Concord Is About To Open America’s First Sport-Focused University

Forest Trail Sports UniversityForest Trail Sports University is about to take over the old Barber-Scotia campus and open America’s first USCAA fully-accredited sports focused university.

Their website said degree offerings will include Master of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, associate and certificates in a variety of fields through distance learning at Waldorf University – a Higher Learning Commission accredited college based in Forest City, Iowa.

The university plans to field as many as 10 varsity sports this coming fall, including men’s and women’s baseball, soccer, basketball, and more.

Forest Trail now has about 200 student committed for this fall semester, including seven athletes who had previously committed to NCAA Division I schools, and the school is now anticipating enrollment of about 250 by the time the semester starts.

The school’s basketball team already has 30 games scheduled for this upcoming season with teams from the NCAA, NAIA and the USCAA.

Harris Teeter Now Delivering Beer and Wine To Homes Throughout The Charlotte Region (Test Market)

Shipt members who are 21 years and older in the Charlotte area can now have Harris Teeter’s selection of beer and wine delivered to their home. As a perk to members, deliveries are free for all orders over $35, inclusive of beer, wine and grocery items. Charlotte is the first market where Shipt is delivering groceries and alcohol from one store, further demonstrating the company’s commitment to making lives easier across the Charlotte metro area.

“Shipt launched its service partnership with Harris Teeter in the Charlotte area in October and has received incredible customer feedback ever since,” said Bill Smith, founder and CEO of Shipt. “Harris Teeter is a community staple and has built a loyal customer base, and we are honored to work with such a well-respected brand. Charlotte has truly embraced Shipt for grocery delivery, and members will now be able to enjoy the convenience of alcohol delivery as well.”

The full selection of items in stock at Harris Teeter’s local stores will be available to Shipt members through the app. Members can select a one-hour delivery window with delivery times available as soon as one hour after the order is placed. To verify age, members will scan their IDs through the app and will be required to present the same identification to the Shipt Shopper upon delivery.

Shipt initially started in Alabama after seeing the wild popularity of Amazon Prime Pantry grocery delivery service, which launched back in 2014.

Greg Olsen Just Won The NFL’s Man of The Year Award Challenge

Greg Olsen just won the NFL’s Man of The Year Award Challenge thanks to the overwhelming response from his fans.

As part of the Man of the Year award campaign, the NFL and Nationwide launched their second Walter Payton Man of the Year Charity Challenge last month. The challenge pitted each award nominee’s fans against each-other, to see who could tweet and post the most. Fans were directed to post on social media using their favorite nominee’s hashtag between December 12 and January 8. The player with the most hashtag mentions would win $25,000 for the charity of his choice.

Greg’s unique hashtag was #OlsenWPMOYChallenge, in support of his charity Receptions for Research – helping cancer and cardiovascular diseases patients receive a second chance at life.

Although he was trailing by more than 100 thousand mentions Saturday night, fans rallied together to dominates all social media channels yesterday and put Olsen back on top.

He ended up surging ahead of the second place finisher, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Torrey Smith, by over 400,000 total mentions to win the contest with over 1,000,000 total mentions.

Even William Shatner had joined in on the fun;

Greg Olsen was selected as the team’s nominee for the award for his excellence on and off the field, and for his positive impact on he’s had on the Charlotte community.

SQL Sentry Lake NormanLake Norman’s SQL Sentry Company has recently secured a $25 million equity investment from Silicon Valley.

SQL’s advanced digital tools essentially provide database administrators (“DBAs”) greater visibility into performance bottlenecks, and proprietary deep-dive capabilities for efficient resolution.

San Francisco’s Mainsail Partners of San Francisco invested the money in SQL in order to help to accelerate their Sentry’s product development, scale sales and marketing, and expand and enhance its client list.

This investment comes on the heals of a major equity investment in a new social media app based on the Lake Norman area, Socialtopias. The Lake Norman region be the next silicon valley of the east coast?

Kannapolis Man Has Turned His Garage Into Drive-Thru Store

concord-drive-through-garageJohn Watson III began working with his dad in his garage decades ago at 1006 South Ridge Ave.

He decided it meant so much to him, he wanted to share the space with others. When his dad passed away in 2013, John used $75,000 of his savings to retrofit the entire garage into a drive through store. It’s now called the convenience of South End Beer & Tobacco’s drive-thru store.

Customers now pull into the garage, Watson takes their order, then loads them up. If they don’t know what they want, he provides a menu, lets them drive through to see what they want and pull back through.

The average transaction runs about two minutes.

Watson opened the store after retiring from his own grading business for 25 years.

Now, Watson is back working in the garage, offering commercial beers, such as Miller and Anheuser-Busch, but also offering more than 20 craft beers, including SweetWater 420 and Natty Old Town Brown Ale.

South End’s Iconic Design Center Was Sold for $42.7 Million

design-center-south-end-articleThe Design Center of the Carolinas, one of the most historic and recognizable buildings in South End, was recently sold to Asana Properties for $42.7 million.

It was sold by Florida-based Ram Realty Services, according to a deed filed Nov. 18. The 4.5 acre package includes the main Design Center buildings at the southeast corner of Worthington Avenue and Camden Rd., as well as the office building at the southeast corner of Camden and West Boulevard.

Asana plans on renovating and re-branding the property into mostly retail and restaurant space (it’s now mostly office space).

According to their website, their recent experience includes “the execution of approximately $3 billion of retail-driven acquisitions and approximately $2 billion of retail-driven dispositions. We have developed deep relationships across the retail real estate industry that are critical to the identification and execution of investment opportunities.”

Thankfully, Asana’s current plans should preserve and highlight most of the history of the old textile complex (a rarity among most of Charlotte’s knock-down-and-rebuild developments).

The Design Center was originally built in In the late 1920s as Nebel Co’s first Knitting Mill. The water tower was erected around the same time, and now stands as the buildings trademark and a bold reminder of its heritage.

Stephen Wilfong decided to have a little fun with our city’s over-exaggeration of last night’s storm by posting a rather sarcastic “weather report”.

A new organic fast-food restaurant chain is about to descent on the Queen City over the next few months. Founded in 2013, Arizona-based Grabbagreen® is a fast food restaurant where great tasting, healthy food meet the speed and convenience of traditional fast food.

They’re opening their first location in the Epicenter on January 11th, and their second location in Ballantyne in February.

Owner Jeff Adams currently has an agreement with Grabbagreen to open a total of 5 Charlotte area locations, but the leases for the 3 other sites have not yet been signed.

The new restaurant concept first launched last year and quickly expanded to 59 franchised locations in Arizona, Texas, California, North Carolina, Colorado, Idaho, New Jersey and Tennessee.

According to their website, Grabbagreen’s “whole food menu is based on super food ingredients and offers a full selection of grain and green-based bowls with fresh hormone-free and antibiotic-free proteins provided by local farms, fresh-pressed juice, handcrafted smoothies and acai bowls, breakfast, and healthy kid-friendly items.”

Old Man Caught On Video Driving Wheel Chair Down Charlotte Highway During Winter Storm Helena

A lot of people might wonder why it’s so dangerous to drive down snowy roads in the south.

Some saw it’s because we don’t have as many plow trucks as the north. Others say it’s because southern drivers aren’t used to driving in the snow.

I say it’s because of people like this:

Robbie Hodge uploaded his dash-cam video to his YouTube channel at around 6pm this evening. In the description of his video, he noted, “I saw traffic slowing down ahead.. great another wreck. Nope! Just a guy riding a motorized wheel chair down a major road. The speed limit here is 55(most go 65!) He was doing a solid 5.5mph.

Scott Miller originally spotted him at the intersection of Farm pond and Albemarle Rd.;

and Yolanda Pender spotted him near Eastway Blvd.

With 5-8 inches of snow now predicted for the Charlotte region, I wouldn’t be surprised if things got even crazier.

Steve Smith Sr., the Carolina Panther’s record holder for touchdowns (67), receptions (836), and receiving yards (12,197), has just made his retirement official by sending in one of the most epic retirement letters ever.

He offers good news to all the defensive backs in the league by saying he will no longer be antagonizing them.

He tweeted out a picture of the letter this morning and it’s already received over 21,000 retweets and 41,000 likes

Smith, a five-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time All-Pro, emerged as one of the NFL’s most productive wide receivers of the 21st century, leading the league in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns in 2005. In 2011, he became the 35th player in NFL history to amass 10,000 receiving yards. In 2016, Smith became the 14th player in NFL history to amass 1,000 career receptions.

He will now be returning to his hometown of Charlotte, NC where his wife and kids currently live.
