The Northwest’s Most Popular Burger Joint Is Coming To Charlotte

0

Portland’s most popular burger joint, and arguably the best in the Northwest, is about to open their first East Coast location right here in the Queen City.

Little Big Burger was founded in 2010 by chefs Micah Camden and Katie Poppe. They wanted to create a unique gourmet cooked-to-order burger and fry joint in a casual atmosphere. The brand has since developed cult-like following in the Pacific Northwest with their unique cheeses, truffle fries, and special sauces;

North Carolina Taking The Trump Administration To Court For Ending DACA

0

north carolina voter id lawsSince the Trump administration announced that they will be ending the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program, a growing number of states have been filing against the federal government to protect ‘Dreamers’ and DACA recipients.

North Carolina’s Attorney General Josh Stein just added our state to the list by filing with the U.S. District Court. The lawsuit claims that the Trump Administration violated Due Process rights and the Equal Protection clause of the Constitution by discriminating against Dreamers.

The lawsuit also states that ending DACA will harm North Carolina residents, institutions, and economies.

North Carolina is currently home to over 27,000 residents under DACA protection (there are about 800,000 DACA recipients across the US).

Our state Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy indicates that DACA grantees currently pay over $63,618,000 per year in state and local taxes.

Other states who have also filed lawsuits against the Trump Administration for ending DACA included New York, Massachusetts, Washington, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia.

What do you think about the decision to end DACA?

NC Governor Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Category 5 Hurricane Irma

0

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper just issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency in preparation for Hurricane Irma. The order urges North Carolinians to prepare for a possible direct hurricane strike on the state.

The executive order directs all North Carolina agencies to coordinate resources to prepare for the inbound hurricane.

“You can never be too prepared for an emergency,” Governor Cooper said. “We know from Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Harvey that storm tracks can shift quickly and that’s why North Carolina isn’t waiting to get ready. These tropical systems can pack a powerful punch and those who are prepared ahead of time will fare better.”

Here is the Governor’s briefing about the State of Emergency;

The National Hurricane Center is now anticipating Hurricane Irma to strike the Carolinas on the afternoon of September 11th;

governor-mcmasters-hurricane-irma-state-of-emercency

If you live anywhere near the North Carolina coast, you should immediately start reviewing your safety plans, become familiar with local evacuation routes, and continue to follow Irma’s path on NHC.NOAA.Gov.

You should also make sure your hurricane supply kit isĀ stocked and ready to use in case you lose power or get stuck in flash flooding.

Duke Energy recommends the following items (available via 2-day shipping on Amazon.com if your local store has already been cleaned out);

Other items to consider would be candles, matches, blankets, extra clothes, and self-defense weapons (for protection against possible vandalism/looting).

UPDATE 9/7/2017 7:00am:

The forecastĀ for Hurricane Irma continues to show a strong possibility of the storm avoiding landfall with Florida and continuing up the coast toward the Carolinas in full force:

SC Governor Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Category 5 Hurricane Irma

South Carolina’s Governor Henry McMaster just issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency in preparation for Hurricane Irma. The order urges South Carolinians to prepare for a possible direct hurricane strike on the state.

The executive order directs all South Carolina agencies to coordinate resources to prepare for the inbound Category 5 Hurricane.

ā€œThe state of emergency allows one of the best, most experienced emergency response teams in the entire world to begin organizing response efforts,ā€ said Gov. Henry McMaster. ā€œSouth Carolina is fortunate to have time to allow us to prepare for Hurricane Irma’s potential landfall, and it is important that families and individuals in vulnerable areas use that time to review safety plans in case they are needed.ā€

Here is the press conference held after the State of Emergency was declared;

The National Hurricane Center is now anticipating Hurricane Irma to strike the South Carolina coast on the afternoon of September 11th;

The governor also issued this warning to all South Carolina residents, especially near the coast;

If you do not plan on evacuating, make sure your hurricane supply kit isĀ stocked and ready to use in case you lose power or get stuck in flash flooding.

Cat 5 Hurricane Irma Models Shifted East – Possible Carolina Landfall on September 11th

0

As Hurricane Irma continues to fly toward the Caribbean and Southeastern coastline, it continues to strengthenĀ in both wind speed and atmospheric pressure.

Yesterday afternoon, Irma officially became the first Category 5 hurricane of 2017, and based on its current pressure, the storm can now be ranked as one of the most powerful storms of all time.

Here is a list of the most powerfulĀ Hurricanes over the past 100 years;

Early this morning Irma landed a direct hit to the Island of St. Maarten (about 100 miles east of the Virgin Islands).

Here is live video footage from the storm;

Since Irma made her first contact with land, the storm models have shifted ever-so-slightly to the east, increasing the chance that it might miss Florida and makeĀ its first landfall in the Carolinas.

As of this morning, the spaghetti models from the ECMF and the GEFS are both showing a center track toward South Carolina;

via atmos.albany.edu
via atmos.albany.edu
via atmos.albany.edu
via atmos.albany.edu

If Hurricane Irma does make landfall in South Florida, it will significantly slow the storm down before it reaches the Carolinas, but if it misses Florida to the East, it will maintain most of itsĀ wind speeds.

VenturSky’s model now shows the storm making landfall in Northern Georgia/Southern South Carolina at around 11am on September 11th;

ventusky-gust-20170911t1500-32n81w

If this morning’s VenturSky model doesn’t change (very unlikely, since we are still 5 days out), Charlotte would feel the strongest effects of the storm at around 11pmĀ on September 11th;

ventusky-gust-20170912t0300-34n82w

According to the National Hurricane Center, South Carolina should expect to feel its first tropical-storm-force winds by Sunday morning (even if it does make landfall in South Florida);

via nhc.noaa.gov
via nhc.noaa.gov

There is still a chance the storm can miss the continental United States altogether, but it’s always better to be prepared than surprised.

The best way for Charlotte residents to prepare at this pointĀ is toĀ make sure theirĀ hurricane supply kit isĀ stocked and ready to use in case you lose power or get stuck in flash flooding.

Duke Energy recommends the following items (available via 2-day shipping on Amazon.com if your local store has already been cleaned out);

Other items to consider would be candles, matches, blankets, extra clothes, and self-defense weapons (for protection against possible vandalism/looting).

Please report any power outages by calling Duke Energy at 1-800-769-3766, or by submitting the outage online here. You can check the status of current power outages here.

UPDATE 9/6/2017 11:30am:

The National Hurricane Center has now updated their ‘cone forecast’ to reflect the new models with a more easterly path;

UPDATE 9/6/2017 1:00pm:

The governor of South Carolina has just issued a state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Irma (you can find out more information here).

Here is the most recent projection from the National Hurricane Center:

UPDATE 9/7/2017 7:00am:

A State of Emergency has been called for both North Carolina and South Carolina.

Wow this is a really bad picture but it’s my duty to report to you a rating of all the chicken I eat so here we go. Today I got some buffalo chicken wings from Little Caesars and I’m a HUGE fan of chicken wings, but I really wasn’t feeling them. There’s no perfect way to do buffalo wings, but the flavor just wasn’t buffalo-y enough for my liking. Also, I don’t really like when my chicken comes in a pool of sauce… so I’m going to have to give this a 6/10. Maybe I’m just not used to takeout wings, who knows. • • • • • • #chicken #love #foodreviews #food #letsgochicken #favoritefood #sexy #strip #attractive #delicious #tasty #ew #chickenlover #amen #preach #review #yum #littlecaesars #meh

The First Snowfall Of The Season Has Just Been Recorded on Mt. Washington

0

The Mount Washington Observatory officially recorded their first snowfall of the season this past weekend.

The snow came in on a cold front that featured 25 degree temperatures and hurricane force winds.

The Obervatory posted a shot of the summit with a frozen-over sign on their Facebook page, that’s now been shared over 17,000 times;

The East Coast’s first real taste of winter included a wide range of comments from both residents and tourists. Some can’t wait to strap on their ski gear, others want warm summer weather to last as long as possible.

Officials from the observatory say the first recorded snowfall usually comes toward the end of September, but snow has fallen this early in past years.

What do you think about the East Coast’s first snowfall of the season?

Carolinas HealthCare Merging With UNC To Form One Of The Largest Medical Giants In America

0

CMC - South Park - Urgent CareCarolinas HealthCare SystemĀ andĀ UNC Health CareĀ have officially announced plans toĀ create one of the leading non-profit healthcare systems in the nation, by merging a high-performing comprehensive healthcare system with a renowned academically-based enterprise, according to a recent press release.

Their signedĀ Letter of IntentĀ states that “UNCHCS and CHS will come together to create a new organization that blends the best of a high-performing comprehensive healthcare system with a renowned academically-based healthcare enterprise. The joint enterprise will provide solutions for healthcare’s most pressing challenges, including access and affordability, while offering unparalleled clinical expertise tied to a renowned academic enterprise and contributing to our region’s economic vibrancy.”

The newly merged organization will deliver world-class care to people throughout North Carolina by creating the most comprehensive network of primary, specialty and on-demand care in the Southeast, and one of the largest networks in America.

“Together with UNC Health Care, we believe that the opportunities to be a national model and to elevate health in North Carolina are nearly limitless,” saidĀ Gene Woods, current president and CEO of Carolinas HealthCare System, and future CEO of the new entity. ā€œFor example, since our organizations already serve almost 50 percent of all patients who visit rural hospitals in our state, we are perfectly positioned to participate in the reinvention of rural healthcare in partnership with others. Ensuring there is great healthcare in rural counties is not only important to our patients’ physical wellbeing, but is also vital to the economic wellbeing of those communities as well. At the same time, we are also inspired by what our two organizations will be able to do together to transform cancer treatment. At Levine Cancer Institute, we care for over 10,000 new patients every year, and over 1,000 participate in clinical trials through a ā€˜care-close-to-home’ model in more than 25 locations throughout the Carolinas. Combined with UNC Health Care’s National Cancer Institute designation, with more than $70 million in joint cancer research grants for clinical trials, we will create a cancer network that is second to none in the country. In short, this partnership is an example of one of those truly ā€˜big ideas’ that this state is known for.”

Officials for CHS and UNC say their partnership will not technically be a merger because they do not intend to pool their assets. Some experts have called similar mergers of research institutes with hospital chains ‘virtual-mergers’ since the primary goal is a shared pool of knowledge, not finances or profit.

Raleigh’s News & Observer interviewed the leaders of both companies about what the merger might look like;

The new company will soon have access to 52 hospitals and 95,000 employees;

CAROLINAS HEALTHCARE SYSTEM UNC HEALTH CARE
Number of hospitals: 40 Number of hospitals: 12
2016 revenue: $9.8 billion 2016 revenue: $3.6 billion
2016 employees: 65,000 2016 employees: 30,000
Headquarters: Charlotte Headquarters: Chapel Hill

The two organizations will take the next 180 days to determine where the new organization will be headquartered, what it will be called, and numerous other details. They hope to secure approval from the Federal Trade Commission sometime next year.

What do you think of the new merger?
