North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras National Seashore, in partnership with the National Park Trust and the Land and Water Conservation Fund, just purchased 2 houses on the outer banks for “fair market value” in order to prevent them from washing into the ocean.

According to a press release from the National Park Service, the 2 homes in Rodanthe, NC, located at 23292 and 23298 East Beacon Road were funded by the Land and Water Conservation Fund without using taxpayer money.

According to Dare County tax records, they paid a total of $731,000 for both houses ( $471k for the 6-bed home and $260k for the 4-bed home).

Plans are now underway to hire a contractor to dismantle the structures on these properties and rejuvenate the beach. Once completed, the area will be accessible to the public. Should the structures fall before removal, immediate cleanup and restoration will be initiated by the Seashore.

What do you think about the decision?
