NC Will See Strong Growth in Mining, IT, and Services – UNCC’s September 2019 Economic Forecast

The economy of the United States and North Carolina is now experiencing the longest economic expansion since 1854. While at a modest rate, the national and state economies do continue to grow, and this consistent, decade-long expansion is significant, UNC Charlotte professor and economist John Connaughton said. “This milestone of economic growth is noteworthy because it represents a consecutive decade of growth since the expansion began in 2010.”

What North Carolina industries are benefiting the most from this continued economic expansion?

Connaughton says the data demonstrates that thirteen of the state’s fifteen economic sectors are forecast to experience increases in 2019, with the strongest expected in mining, information and business and professional services.  The industries with the highest expected employment increases in 2019 are transportation, warehousing and utilities; and other services.

It now appears, however, that the economic increase from the tax cuts seems to be waning. In addition, the trade war with China is beginning to impact U.S. economic growth. While the trade war is getting substantial attention, the reduction in volume of U.S. exports to China is not enough to spin the economy into recession. Likely, the trade dispute impact will negate the 2018 tax cut benefits.  This will return the economy to the 2.0 percent growth ceiling until the trade dispute is resolved. It appears that the trade dispute and the tax cuts are now offsetting influences on the economy.”

During the quarterly Barings/UNC Charlotte Economic Forecast, Connaughton transitioned from 2019 to 2020 and presented the economic forecast for the next 15 months.

During the quarterly Barings/UNC Charlotte Economic Forecast, Connaughton transitioned from 2019 to 2020 and presented the economic forecast for the next 15 months.

Connaughton added, “Going forward, the long term growth question is dictated by two factors that are more influential than tax cuts or trade disruptions. The first is labor force growth and the second is productivity growth. Since 2010 the average annual U.S. labor force growth rate has been only 0.22 percent with the average annual productivity growth rate at only 0.78 percent. If the growth rate of these two factors continues at such a modest rate, the economy will be hard-pressed to continue even a 2.0 percent annual GDP growth rate. ”

Likewise, for 2020, Connaughton expects North Carolina’s GSP to reach a level of $611,841.8 million, with the real (inflation-adjusted) GSP increasing only by 2.0 percent over the 2019 level.  Our state’s unemployment rate is expected to be 4.1 percent by the end of 2020, up slightly from 3.8 percent at the beginning of 2019.

With this trend, should a recession be expected?

Connaughton says “Despite the projected slowing of both the U.S. and North Carolina economies in 2020, the prospect for a recession is still slight. Consumer Confidence remains high:  last month in August, the index settled at 135.1, down just slightly from July’s number of 135.8. With the national unemployment rate consistently below 4.0 percent, more job openings than job seekers, and lower gasoline prices than last year at this time, consumers have the discretionary income to keep personal consumption expenditures on an upward trajectory.  In addition, the Fed appears to be ready to quickly counter any economic downward trend with lower interest rates.”

Connaughton presented his quarterly forecast to members of the Charlotte business community and the media at a luncheon held at UNC Charlotte Center City. The Forecast is sponsored by Barings.

Charlotte Ranked As The 7th Most Dynamic City In America

A new report by Point2 Homes has just ranked the Queen City as one of the most dynamic cities in the U.S.

The company analysed data from the nation’s 150 most populous cities and, to identify the top performers in terms of growth and progress, they selected 18 indicators, grouped into four main dimensions (Human Capital, Education and Culture, Economic Activity, and Housing). Then they weighted the scores attributed to each indicator to reflect their importance, on a 120-point scale.

According to the data, Charlotte was found to be the 7th most dynamic large city in the country.

Charlotte Middle School Student Arrested After Threatening To “Shoot Up” School on Instagram

Last night CMPD arrested a 13-year-old boy after threatening a school shooting at Coulwood Middle School, according to police.

“The threat originated on Instagram, and contained a photograph of a firearm with a caption that indicated that a shooting would take place on Thursday,” officials said.

Police were first tipped off when a parent posted an image of the threat on social media and it began to spread (the post has since been taken down).

Last night Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police searched the home of the student and found no firearms. The teen told police that the post was just a joke.

“It appears that the student simply obtained a photograph of a firearm online but does not actually possess a gun,” CMPD commented.

Charlotte’s Newest Topgolf Facility Opening In Uptown Next Month

Topgolf is about to open its second Charlotte location in the heart of Uptown with a smaller concept called “Topgolf Swing Suite”.

According to a press release from the company, they want you to think of the concept as “everything you love about Topgolf in a luxury suite.”

The new 10,000 square foot facility will include a full food and drink menu, lounge seating, and massive simulators featuring a variety of golf games, as well as other sports like Baseball, Football, Hockey, and even zombie dodge-ball:

Uptown Charlotte’s new Topgolf Swing Suite is located in the old Flight Beer Garden in Northside Station;

Construction is almost finished on the facility. Topgolf officials are planning on hosting a grand opening celebration sometime next month.

Mother Shot Inside Hickory Mall After Man’s Concealed 9mm Accidentally Discharges

This past Thursday a mother was accidentally shot by her boyfriend’s 9mm pistol in Hickory, NC’s Valley Hills Mall.

According to police, Taliah Tilley was walking through the mall with her son and her boyfriend, A-Duan Namon Walker. Her son unintentionally knocked Walker’s 9mm out of its holster, the gun then hit the ground, discharged, and a single bullet hit both of Tilley’s feet.

She is still recovering after last weeks accident since doctors couldn’t fully remove all of the bullet fragments out of her feet.

A summons has been issued by a local magistrate for Walker on a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.

Some of the most common reasons for low scores were food handlers not washing their hands properly, contaminated food containers, and improper food temperatures (many restaurants are starting to use infrared thermometers to avoid this).   • Observed large amount of sticker labels and sticker residue on stacked metal containers. Observed clean cutting boards stored on the floor of the kitchen by the hand sink.
  • Observed two prep top pull drawers cold holding TCS foods at 50-58F (see temp chart).
  • Observed several food items such as bean sprouts, goat cheese, and cooked meatballs without a date labels.
  • Observed grilled onions (dated 8/9), cooked mushrooms (dated 8/9), falafel (dated 8/9), and cooked veal meatballs (dated 7/22) held past 7 days.

  • Observed raw salmon being stored over RTE foods inside of reach in 2 door unit. Observed raw oysters and raw eggs being stored over RTE foods in walk in cooler. Also observed raw foods being stored over oysters and other RTE foods in walk in cooler.
  • Soiled dishes were being stored as cleaned. Stickers films were still stored on dishes that were stored as cleaned.
  • Ice machine contained mold buildup along interior chute.
  • Baked potatoes and cooked corn cobs were being stored at ambient air temps after PIC stated the intent of these items are to be stored hot.
  • Observed cooked crab that were cold holding >41 degrees F. Also observed boiled eggs cold holding in cold hold unit >41 degrees. House made sauce tcs sauce was cold holding out at ambient air.
  • Tomatoes soup in walk in cooler was not dated and was made from 2 days prior. Cooked sausage inside of cold hold unit also was not properly dated.
  •  Facility is dipping raw proteins inside of flour without the flour being under time or temperature control.
  • Facility does not have undercooked foods marked with asterisk which refers customers back to consumer advisory on menus.
  • A chemical substance that was used as a disinfectant for cleaning hood filters etc was stored inside of a bottle labeled sanitizer.

Trump Cancels Trip To Outer Banks After Lightning Storm Surrounds Air Force One in NC Airport

Today President Trump canceled a planned trip to the Hurricane Dorian-ravaged Outer Banks after a lighting storm blew through Eastern North Carolina soon after Air Force One landed in the the MCAS Cherry Point Base in Havelock, NC.

He was scheduled to take a helicopter ride to Emerald Isle this afternoon. After landing in Cherry Point, a lighting storm picked up strength and the decision was made to remain in Air Force One, where the President received a briefing from NC Governor Roy Cooper about the damage from Hurricane Dorian.

Soon after Air Force One arrived, a massive lightning strike was captured by CNN reporters in the press pool.

CNN producer Steve Brusk posted the picture, noting that it was taken by CNN’s “very wet pool crew of Orly Ruiz, Michael Wade Sanders and Liz Turrell”.

President Trump then reposted CNN’s photo (a source he considers “fake news”) with no credit given;

About an hour ago, President Trump took off toward Fayetteville, NC, where he is scheduled to speak at a rally in support of Republican Congressional Candidate Dan Bishop this evening.

The special election between Dan Bishop and Dan McCready is now set for September 10th. The election is being held due to Republican Mark Harris winning and being found guilty of voter fraud, Harris declined to run again in the special election.
