Where Did the Term ‘Jackpot’ Originate From?

0

Many people dream of one day winning the elusive jackpot – that big bonus that rewards the player thousands of dollars in prize money. From casinos and sportsbooks to lotteries and scratch cards, jackpots have become a common theme in everyday life.

There are many different types of jackpots in the world, ranging from a few hundred dollars to the multi-millions. Some games have set jackpots that never change while others have progressive jackpots the increase over time. In many countries around the world the lottery jackpot rolls over if nobody wins, resulting in prizes in the hundreds of millions!

As technology has progressed, gambling has moved online and now many people play at digital casinos. Websites like casinosx.com host detailed lists of online casinos where players can find all the best jackpots.

But where did the term jackpot originate from?

Way back in the late 1800s, gamblers used to play a version of poker called “Jacks or Better”. The game is similar to five-card draw poker, except that each player must have at least a pair of jacks or better to open betting in the first round. Essentially, this means that any hand that could beat a pair of tens would be good enough to start betting.

Once someone has opened the betting then the rest of the players can match, raise, or fold – irrelevant of their hand’s value. If nobody in the group of players has jacks or better, then the entire hand is re-dealt. Once all the cards are dealt and all betting rounds have finished, players can now show their hands. However, unlike in normal poker, a player must have at least three-of-kind or better to win. If nobody has three-of-kind or better, then all the money in the pot stays and a new round starts.

A three-of-kind hand isn’t very common in poker so it happened fairly often that rounds went by without anybody winning. If nobody won a round for several games, the pot would grow and grow. Eventually, this big central pot became known as the ‘jack pot’. This is where the name came from and was the first ever example of a progressive jackpot in gambling.

Modern day

Nowadays, the term jackpot has been co-opted by casinos and applied to a wide range of games. Funnily enough, it is seldom used in poker these days and is most commonly attributed to the big prize on a lottery or slot machine. Casinos, lotteries, scatch cards, and bingo halls all around the world now use the term jackpot to refer to any big prize. It’s often seen in advertising, promotions and competitions for everything from cars to holidays.

People even use the term colloquially to describe a new job with a big salary or when they do well in the stock market. Suffice it to say, if something is described as the ‘jackpot’, it’s probably going to be something good.

So next time you take your chances on a big jackpot win, remember the poker players of the old days trying their best to get three-of-kind. If you want some more interesting poker trivia, read about why the last card in Texas Hold’em is called ‘the river’.

First Case of Serious MIS-C Disease Reported in North Carolina

0

North Carolina has just reported its first case of MIS-C (Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children), a potentially deadly condition connected to COVID-19.

According to the press release, “MIS-C is not contagious, but children with these symptoms could have COVID-19 or another infection that may be contagious. Parents and caregivers should take precautions to prevent spread, and health care providers will use infection control precautions when treating your child.”

The first case of the rare MIS-C was reported in late April in England, but since then, it’s been rising at an exponential rate around the world as COVID-19 continues to spread.

Most patients who have been diagnosed with MIS-C have a fever that lasts for several days, and other common symptoms including:

  • Irritability or decreased activity
  • Abdominal pain without another explanation
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Rash
  • Conjunctivitis (red or pink eyes)
  • Poor feeding
  • Red, cracked lips or red, bumpy tongue that looks like a strawberry
  • Swollen hands and feet, which might also be red

Governor Cooper Announces Move to ‘Phase 2’ – Allowing Restaurants, Bars, and Churches To Reopen

0

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has just announced that our state will be transitioning into “Phase 2” of the ‘Safer at Home’ order.

“North Carolina is using the data to guide our decisions about when to lift COVID-19 restrictions, and overall our key indicators remain stable,” said Governor Cooper. “Safer At Home Phase 2 is another careful step forward, and we have to continue taking this virus seriously to prevent a dangerous spike in infections.”

The governor’s new ‘Executive Order No. 141‘ effectively lifts the ‘The Stay at Home Order’ in Executive Order No. 138 and allows for restaurants, salons, and pools to reopen at 50% max capacity. It also allows for indoor gatherings of 10 people and outdoor gatherings of 25 people.

The new order also includes the following exemption:

“Worship, religious, and spiritual gatherings, funeral ceremonies, wedding ceremonies, and
other activities constituting the exercise of First Amendment rights are exempt from all the
requirements ofthis Executive Order and Executive Order Nos. 121 and 138, notwithstanding any other provision ofthis Executive Order or of Executive Order Nos. 121 and 138.

The undersigned strongly urges that entities and individuals engaging in these exempted
activities follow the Recommendations to Promote Social Distancing and Reduce Transmission, avoid exceeding Emergency Maximum Occupancy in the places where they meet, and avoid holding Mass Gatherings.”

Jonah Engler Emphasizes the Importance of Teaching Kids Sportsmanship

0

Humility in defeat is something everyone should practice, but it isn’t the easiest thing to teach your children. Even the most talented kids are not immune to poor attitude, and one of the places this kind of behavior really finds a platform in the field. When a child messes up at a game, it’s perfectly normal and human of them. But if they react by arguing, cheating, making excuses, or pointing fingers, people tend to form poor impressions then and there; these impressions long outlast any mention of their talent.

As a parent, one of the worst things you can do is to attempt to inculcate a “win at any cost” mentality in your child. Winning is great, and every kid should strive for success, but an egocentric approach to any endeavor tends to override more selfless, time-tested human values like humility, consideration, and camaraderie, which are so much more important. You must teach them to act with grace on and off the field and to always value fairness, forgiveness, and good sportsmanship.

Jonah Engler Suggests You Call out Poor Sportsmanship

If your kid is acting like a sore loser, go ahead and call it out. This can range from making excuses and not accepting fair criticism, to going too far and blaming their mistakes on their teammates, coaches, or another parent. You need to clearly define the boundaries of acceptable behavior and tell them that this kind of attitude will not be tolerated. Simply forbidding them isn’t a good idea though; you need to explain why it is bad. Tell them that being considerate of others’ feelings is not optional; if they say something hurtful, they will not be allowed to participate any further. You can come up with a card system if sports references are their thing, advises Jonah Engler. Any poor attitude displayed is a yellow card offense, where you take them aside and correct the action. Any violent or outright rude behavior is a red card offense; you will take them home immediately, no matter what.

Stress on the Importance of Fraternity and Sportsmanship, says Jonah Engler

Sportsmanship always needs to take precedence over victory if you want to raise a good child. You have to keep repeating that winning isn’t everything and that it isn’t the outcome, but how you play a game that stays with you forever and defines who you are. You can keep posters in their rooms that reflect these sentiments, and also have elders repeat the same to them from time to time. If they don’t play clean, they don’t play. As per experts at Forbes.com https://www.forbes.com, collaboration is bound to beat competition on all occasions. Good sportsmanship is not just important in the sports ground but it could also, make you unflinching and unstoppable even in business.

Jonah Engler Advises: Find Teachable Moments

Your kids need to learn that setbacks are a part of life, and just like they have good days, bad days come too. It is how you take them in stride and move on to the next challenge that defines you. You should go the extra mile to sensitize them to the feelings of others, on their team, as well as, the opponents. Point out positive and negative examples that you notice in real-life interactions as well as in popular media to really drive the point home. While a lot of reality television is not rooted in reality, these shows do a good job of showing how people feel when they deal with adversity and loss. Interviews of the sports stars they idolize work great for this too because every single great athlete has suffered their fair share of losses and come past it to be where they are.

Jonah Engler Emphasizes On Encouragement

Good losers and good sports go hand in hand. A person who could take a defeat in his stride without losing heart or being bitter is good sportsmanship. Parents could help their child become more encouraging simply by teaching him the famous ‘Two Praise Rule.’ According to this simple rule, the child must be encouraged to praise his peers twice before the game or the event ends. You must discuss some encouraging and motivating actions or comments so that he has a repertoire to start with, for instance, ‘Good argument!’ or ‘Good answer!’ or ‘Good performance!’ etc. You must go on expanding the list of praises. Your child must be encouraged to practice the above-discussed rule at group activities like a scout meeting, a team game, etc.

Jonah Engler Recommends Teaching Kids to Lose Gracefully With No Regrets Whatsoever

Everyone makes mistakes. Often kids are not sporting and they are bad losers. However, they must learn to lose gracefully and accept it as part of the game. Parents must teach their children to handle setbacks and defeats calmly and gracefully. Kids must not be poor losers. Parents must focus on teaching their children the skill of losing with dignity. They must help their kids develop the sportsmanship by losing gracefully. Your child must practice accepting defeats without losing heart. He must not despair instead; he must use this defeat as a stepping stone to future success. Encourage him to say things like ‘Let’s do it once again soon.’ Or ‘We tried our best.’ He must keep practicing so that he is able to say all these to his peers from the core of his heart and with confidence.

Jonah Engler Tells Parents to Teach Their Kids the Good Sportsmanship Guidelines

Good sportsmanship implies following religiously a few guidelines of good behavior. Parents must share and teach these concepts to their kids.

  • Follow all the rules and regulations of the game. You must explain to your kid that rules have been created to make sure that sports could be played in a fair and organized way.
  • Do not stoop to arguing. Ask your kid to focus on the game and not to give in to undesirable anger with teammates, opponents, referees, or coaches. Kids must be cautioned against using any foul language and negative words.
  • Always play fair and remember cheating is just not acceptable.
  • Always follow the dictates and directions. Listen to referees and coaches and follow their instructions. Always respect their decisions.
  • Show respect to the other team. Irrespective of winning or losing a game, it is of pivotal importance to show respect to the efforts of the other team.
  • Praise your teammates when they perform well and encourage them even when they have committed some mistakes. Avoid unkind actions and criticism.
  • Good sportsmanship is all about playing the game fairly and ending it on a friendly and positive note.

Conclusion

A combination of positive and negative reinforcement is the key to teaching any concept- and it holds true for sportsmanship as well. If you keep being harsh to your child, they might lash out and reinforce the toxic patterns that you want to call out. You need to combine this with praise where it is due and words of affirmation and encouragement whenever possible. If you can keep it up along with other healthy parenting habits, your child will become a more rounded individual who enjoys each game for the experience, treats people with respect, and is an asset to any team they are part of.

The Humana Foundation announced it is committing $500,000 to the community-wide efforts of the COVID-19 Response Fund, bringing the fundraising total to more than $19 million.

The donation is part of The Humana Foundation’s April 30 announcement to commit $50 million to coronavirus relief and recovery efforts to a select group of organizations supporting essential workers, food security, behavioral health and local communities. This commitment builds upon The Humana Foundation’s continued work in its Bold Goal Communities, which aims to improve population health in North Carolina by co-creating solutions that address health-related social needs for communities.

“The Humana Foundation understands the far-reaching strain the pandemic has placed on many organizations working on the frontlines to provide healthcare, food and employment for those disproportionality affected by the COVID-19 health crisis, and our aim is to remove barriers and help them respond, recover and rebuild,” said Walter D. Woods, chief executive officer of The Humana Foundation. “Our intention with this commitment is to not only help provide immediate crisis relief, but also serve as a catalyst in building sustainable achievement and long-term community resilience.”

The COVID-19 Response Fund was launched in March by Foundation For The Carolinas and United Way of Central Carolinas to support those most impacted by the pandemic. So far through two grant cycles, the fund has more than $10 million in grants to a range of nonprofits – from large institutions to smaller grassroots organizations – on the frontlines of the crisis, providing food, shelter, economic assistance, healthcare and more to families and individuals most in need.

The next grant cycle will open May 20 at 10 a.m. and run until June 10 at noon. Visit uwcentralcarolinas.org/grants/COVID for details.

“Thanks to the generosity of The Humana Foundation, we are better positioned to help our citizens recover and rebuild from this crisis,” said Foundation For The Carolinas President and CEO Michael Marsicano. “There’s more to be done, but with partners such as The Humana Foundation, we can help each other get through this difficult time together.”

The COVID-19 Response Fund is administered through a partnership between Foundation For The Carolinas and United Way of Central Carolinas, in close coordination with the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Additional efforts have been established throughout the Carolinas in counties served by FFTC and/or United Way of Central Carolinas.

“Though there’s still more to be done, thanks to generous partners such as The Humana Foundation, our local nonprofits will get help to those who need it the most,” said Laura Yates Clark, president and CEO of United Way of Central Carolinas. “This community’s most vulnerable need access to food, healthcare, educational assistance and shelter, which these funds will help provide.”

Donations to the COVID-19 Response Fund have ranged from a two-dollar commitment from an anonymous online donor to $1.3 million from Mecklenburg County. Other major gifts include $100,000 each from the Charlotte Hornets Foundation, the Springsteen Foundation, the Philip L. Van Every Foundation, Kim and Johnny Belk, and Alfred and Amy Levine Dawson; $150,000 each from Wells Fargo, Wells Fargo Championship and Sean & Andrea Smith; $200,000 each from Allstate Insurance and Vanguard; $250,000 each from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Community Foundation, the Weisiger Fleming Family Fund, EY, PwC/The PwC Charitable Foundation, and The Hearst Foundations; $270,000 from BlackArch Partners/The Regions Foundation; $500,000 each from Ally Financial, the Duke Energy Foundation and the John S. & James L.
