It was another trying season for the Charlotte Hornets. Things got so bad that the team were not even invited to the NBA’s restart in Orlando, as they were so far down in the standings at 23-42. This means the Hornets are in the midst of an extended offseason — one that they can use to soul-search, and eventually build something that will excite fans moving forward.

The good news is that the groundwork back to being contenders has already been laid: Head coach James Borrego has emerged as one of the game’s bright young tacticians, while Terry Rozier, Devonte’ Graham, PJ Washington, and Miles Bridges have formed a young, talented nucleus. In other words, the Hornets need not go on a full-on rebuild just like The Process in Philadelphia. That said, it is imperative that the Charlotte front office get things right this offseason, so they can set themselves up for success sooner rather than later.

To be clear, the Hornets will not be contenders overnight. But they can start building a strong team this offseason by reloading the roster through the draft and via free agency. The goal must be to build a good enough team that can entice a superstar to come to Charlotte. Fortunately, Hornets general manager Mitch Kupchak knows the value of getting a superstar on board, telling the Charlotte Observer how he is actively looking for alpha-level talent.

The 2021 free agent class has plenty of such talent, as it will include Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Davis, and potentially, Paul George, Blake Griffin, and Kawhi Leonard. Incidentally, Leonard joining the Toronto Raptors last season shows just how valuable it is to have a superstar alpha, as he all but transformed the Raptors into champions.

This season has been no different, with Leonard signing with the Los Angeles Clippers and bringing along another superstar in Paul George. Unsurprisingly, the Clippers are number 1 in the NBA Championship odds listed on Bwin, ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers. While nabbing Leonard is probably a long shot, Antetokounmpo, Davis, or Griffin could all be an option.

That said, the Hornets have a good building block to work with in the 2020 NBA Draft, as they own the 3rd pick overall. Now, they won’t be able to add the kind of superstar talent they need with that pick, but they can use it to stock their roster further. Depending on what the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Golden State Warriors do with their picks, the Hornets could land Anthony Edwards, James Wiseman, or Lamelo Ball — all of whom look ready to contribute to a winning basketball team. Packaging that pick, along with a young asset or future picks, is an option, too, though the Hornets will need to make sure that they get a player of commensurate value — like a young veteran who can protect the paint as Borrego desires, or a talented wing who can at least be the number 2 guy for a championship-caliber team.

Equally important, the Hornets will have to exercise both restraint and prudence in free agency. Terry Rozier’s $57 million deal last offseason turned out okay, even though it was a risk to say the least. Moving forward, the team can ill afford to take such risks and lavish big contracts to players who are middle of the pack at best (e.g., Serge Ibaka, Fred VanVleet, Danilo Galinari). If they can be signed to reasonable contracts, then great; if not, it might be wise to pass up on them and just roll with the young guns.

Thankfully, Kupchak seems to get it, and is taking the long-view approach. “Get to a point where we can not only sustain a team that can make the playoffs, but can advance in the playoffs,” Kupchak said when asked about his plans. How things play out for the Hornets in this extended offseason can either push those plans forward, or set them back.

In this time of disruption due to COVID-19, it’s more important than ever to celebrate young people making a difference through volunteer service.

Today through November 10, Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) are calling on North Carolina youth volunteers to apply for scholarships and national recognition through The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

North Carolina students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply for 2021 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards if they have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteering within the past 12 months — virtually or otherwise. The application is available at http://spirit.prudential.com.

“More than 25 years ago, we founded The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards to honor young volunteers working to meet the needs of our changing world — a mission that feels especially timely today,” said Charles Lowrey, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. “As life evolves due to COVID-19, young Americans are continuing to address urgent issues facing their communities, and we celebrate their service in hopes that they’ll inspire others to do the same.”

Those National Honorees will receive additional $5,000 scholarships, gold medallions, crystal trophies for their nominating schools or organizations, and $5,000 Prudential grants for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice.

Local-level honorees in each state will receive awards ranging from bronze medallions to certificates. Qualifying local honorees also receive President’s Volunteer Service Awards.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards was created in 1995 to recognize the exemplary volunteer work of middle level and high school students. Since then, awards have been granted to more than 140,000 middle and high school students across the country at the local, state and national level. CATS Holding Public Meetings About New LYNX Light Rail Line To Gaston County

The city of Charlotte is about to hold a series of virtual meetings to receive public feedback about a proposed Light Rail extension from Uptown Charlotte into Gastonia.

CATS leaders are currently weighing the pros and cons of building the next line down to Matthews (LYNX Silver Line), or to the airport and eventually to Gaston County.

According to Belmont city manager Adrian Miller, there are now 65,000 vehicles traveling between Mecklenburg and Gaston Counties every day, which often results in traffic backups on I-85.

Jason Lawrence, a project manager with CATS said the project would likely take 10 to 12 years to build. He also noted that financing hasn’t yet been identified. The several billions of dollars in funding would likely come from a combination of local, state and federal taxes.

On September 11, 2001, 2 American Airlines Boeing 767s, collided into the World Trade Center Towers in New York City, causing the complete destruction of both towers. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, crashed into the west side of the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. and a 4th plane crash-landed into a field in Pennsylvania, killing everyone on board.

The September 11th attacks tragically took the lives of 2,977 people.

Today we remember them.

Charlotte’s 9/11 Flags of Remembrance Memorial

Romare Bearden Park (300 S. Church St) will honor the victims and first-responders of 9/11 this year with a massive display.

A memorial featuring 2,977 flags set up in the shape of the World Trade Center Towers will be set up on the lawn. Due to COVID-19, temperatures are being taken and capacity is limited at the memorial.

The memorial will be available to visit through Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Flags of Sutton Bridge 

Several local Charlotteans and York County residents will be gathering on the Sutton Bridge to wave flags and honor those who have lost their lives during rush hour times.

According to their Facebook event:

“Rolling Thunder sponsored memorial to those lost on 9/11. This will be rush hour times so 7-9am and 4-6pm. We will have some flags but bring them if you have them. This is a non-political event, so American flags only please.”

The flag will be displayed over I-77 as thousands of motorists pass through the region.

Levine Museum of the New South, in partnership Bank of America, will host Dr. Bernice A. King, the daughter of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, and CEO of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center), on September 15 for a virtual conversation on how our community and nation can move forward together in a world of growing racial and political divisiveness.

The conversation, titled “The Fierce Urgency of Now,” is the latest in a series of events hosted by Levine Museum addressing social justice and the fight for racial equity. Recent programs have included a panel with former South Carolina state representative and racial justice activist Bakari Sellers and the exhibit “It Happened Here,” which builds on the Equal Justice Initiative’s research into the history of lynching across America.

Through her work at The King Center, Dr. King continues to educate youth and adults about the nonviolent principles modeled by her parents. Under Dr. King’s leadership, the Center has expanded and enhanced its community engagement through Nonviolence365™, a training and education initiative focused on peaceful resolution; launched the “Better Together: Racial Reconciliation” initiative for pastors and church leaders; and initiated the “Beloved Community Talks” to encourage conversations about the difficult racial issues impacting our communities, nation and world.
