Why Is Cash Flow Analysis Important?

0

If you don’t know how to do a cash flow analysis, you’re not making the right decisions for your business. Accounting teams will conduct an analysis of cash flow to better understand a company’s:

  • Cash position
  • Financial needs

But before we go any further, let’s answer an important question: what is analyzing cash flow anyway?

Let’s find out.

What is cash flow analysis?

Cash flow is the sum of all cash minus the sum of all outflows. When you deduct the outflows from the inflows, you can better understand how much money your business has to operate.

However, when discussing analysis, we’re doing a few things:

  • Breaking cash into three categories:
    • Cash from operating activities
    • Cash from investing activities
    • Cash from financing activities
  • Analyze all three categories to see where cash is going in and out

For example, you may have solid cash from operating activities even though your cash flow is negative.

How?

You may have more than enough cash coming in from sales to cover operating expenses, but you’re investing heavily in a new product or service. Tech companies often have this issue because they’re investing far more money than they own on opportunities.

The investment money may come from cash, but when it goes into negative territory, the investment money is coming from financing.

Financing, such as a massive loan or investment round, is still cash, and it’s counted as money in a cash flow statement. You have access to the cash from the loan and can use it for your business expenses, so the money can be counted in your statement.

When you conduct a cash flow analysis, you’re doing a few things:

  • Learning how much money is coming in and going out from all three cash sources
  • Gaining an understanding of how money is generated and lost during a specific span of time
  • Understanding where cash is being used wisely and frivolously
  • Generate unlevered and free cash flow reports

Newer businesses often struggle with cash flow and benefit the most from analysis because they’re spending a lot of money to make sales, gain market share and build their companies. Running a cash flow analysis provides insight into the true health of a business’s operations so that you know how healthy your cash flow is and what decisions you can make.

As your business grows, you may even start generating different types of cash flow statements, all of which shed light on your business’s operations.

Why is cash flow analysis important?

You’ve done a lot of work, created multiple cash flow statements and now want to justify a full analysis of your cash flow. Analyzing your cash flow is crucial because it:

  • Helps new businesses get a firm grasp on their finances
  • Provides insights into whether your business will be able to pay its bills
  • Makes it easier to make sure that you can continue your operations

However, if you’re just using the data available for the three reasons above, you’re missing out on crucial information that you can and should extract from cash flow reports. Reverting to the three cash categories outlined earlier, we can then see how each category is impacting cash flow.

Perhaps you’re financing too much of your operations and can leverage your cash to pay off debt and cut back on financing.

Why would you do this?

Reducing the need for loans and credit means that you’re not paying out interest, are saving money and are in a better cash position in the long term.

The analysis goes beyond the basic information that a cash flow statement provides and allows you to really understand the cash inflows and outflows of your business. If you’re starting to understand the benefit of an in-depth cash flow analysis, you can now move on to analyzing your cash flow.

How do you perform cash flow analysis?

Cash flow analysis software is one of the best investments a business and accounting team can make because it makes the process faster, more efficient and error-free. You’ll also want to have a stakeholder, often an accounting team, run an analysis, but software can help you with creating:

  • Cash flow statements
  • Projections
  • Forecasts
  • Other financial statements

Next, a human can run the business cash flow analysis to fully understand how cash is being used in a business.

If you want to have a clear and concise understanding of your business’s cash inflows and outflows, an analysis is your best option.

Three NC Cities Rank Among Top Cities Where Black Americans Fare Best Economically

0

Nationwide, when it comes to wealth and personal finance success, Black Americans have struggled more compared to the rest of the population. Census data shows that the median Black household income is 33% lower than the overall median household income and the Black homeownership rate is 22 percentage points lower than the general homeownership rate.

In some parts of the country, however, economic outcomes for Black Americans are more favorable.

In celebration and recognition of Juneteenth, SmartAsset analyzed data on 129 of the largest U.S. cities to find where Black Americans fare best economically. They considered factors including the median Black household income, Black homeownership rate, percentage of Black adults with a bachelor’s degree and Black business-ownership rate, among other metrics.

The North Carolina cities of Charlotte, Durham, and Raleigh cracked the top 20 cities, with Charlotte coming in at #6 in the nation.

Waves of Armadillos Descending On North Carolina Lawns – NCWRC Asking For Help

0

North Carolina is now the latest US state to experience a recent surge in the invasive 9-banded armadillo. The unique mammal loves to tear up yards – digging hundreds of holes in a single day to find enough bugs and grubs to satisfy its hunger.

According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, “the Nine-banded Armadillo, native to Central and South America, was first recorded in Texas in 1849, but have since expanded their range north and east, crossing the Mississippi River sometime in the early 1940’s, appearing in western Tennessee in 1980 and reaching North Carolina in the late 2000s, primarily from natural dispersal from adjacent states.”

Here’s a recent siting from a local backyard:

Only 13% of North Carolinians Know Our State Motto – The Lowest Score In The Nation

0

‘In God We Trust’ is the official motto of the United States, legislated in 1956 and similarly, all states have their very own motto in accordance with the individual values and ideals of their citizens. These mottos are different to state nicknames or slogans often used to promote themselves for marketing reasons. Adopted many years ago, a lot of these mottos are not only bizarre, but are often written in different languages – however, they do serve the purpose of telling a story about the state history. Thus, many ingrain messages of religion, patriotism, equality, and the rights of its citizens.

But how well do we know our own state’s motto? Not very well, it appears in most cases, according to a poll of 5,668 Americans commissioned by SolitaireBliss.com.

When broken down by state, Granite Staters emerged victorious with an A+ score: a whopping 99% of respondents knew their home state motto, which is: ‘Live Free or Die’. To be fair to respondents from other states, ‘Live Free or Die’ is perhaps the country’s second most known motto (behind the national one), so it is no surprise they scored so highly. Adopted from the Granite State’s official seal, the memorable motto was taken from a letter written by General John Stark, an American Revolution war hero native to New Hampshire. It is a testament to the state’s war history and its citizens’ resilience, which is especially notable given that the official motto and emblem were legislated as World War II finally came to a successful end.

Alaskans came out second in the league, with a grade-A score of 93%, just behind New Hampshire. The Last Frontier’s motto, ‘North to the Future’ was chosen during the Alaska Purchase Centennial, celebrating its purchase by the U.S. from Russia. The motto was selected as a way to represent Alaska as a land of promise, referring to its geographical position as the northernmost state and linking this to the prospect of a bright future.

On the other end of the scale, and in final position, North Carolinians had the lowest overall score: only 13% of respondents here could correctly identify their motto: ‘To Be, Rather Than to Seem’, which is the English translation of the Latin words ‘Esse Quam Videri’. The results revealed that a staggering 84% of respondents thought their official state motto is ‘First in Flight’, however, this is the phrase that appears on the state’s license plates – a tribute to the first successful controlled airplane flights operated by the Wright brothers.

Even if respondents from other states scored higher than North Carolinians overall, the quiz revealed that sizable proportions of each state’s population opted for some incorrect and often downright hilarious options! Notable mentions should go to the good people of the following states:

  • Less than half (48%) of Floridians guessed their state motto was ‘In God We Trust’ (which is the same as the national motto). Nearly 1 in 10 (9%) thought it was ‘Our State of Snowbirds‘ – presumably they selected this option as approximately 1,000 people move to Florida each day: mainly retirees.
  • Described by one writer as sounding vaguely like a Boyz II Men song, just 35% of Coloradans correctly identified ‘Nothing Without Providence’ as their state motto. A concerning 1 in 10 (12%) thought the motto was ‘This Land is Not Flat’!
  • Only 59% of Iowans got their motto right – ‘Our Liberties We Prize and Our Right We Will Maintain’. However, nearly 1 in 5 (18%) thought it was ‘Children of the Corn’. Perhaps they thought this was the official motto as Iowa is the largest corn producing state in the country? Or could they have been prompted by Stephen King’s 1984 American supernatural folk horror film of the same name?
  • New York’s state motto is ‘Ever Upwards’, and so it was a little disappointing that only 1 in 3 New Yorkers correctly identified this. Incredibly, 52% thought the state motto was Empire, State Of Mind, which happens to be a song by Jay-Z, featuring Alicia Keys!
  • Mainers scored a commendable 61% for correctly naming ‘I Direct’, but you may wonder if originally, something may have followed after these two words, and somehow got omitted over the passage of time? A significant 23% thought their motto was ‘A Neighbor Of One‘… (Maine is the only state that shares its borders with only one other US state).
  • 55% of Mississippians were correct in stating that ‘By Valor and Arms’ as the Magnolia state motto, but 1 in 10 thought it was ‘In the River, Catfish’ – understandable, perhaps, as Mississippi happens to be the world’s leading producer of pond-raised catfish.
  • Missouri was a standout result. Just 35% correctly said the state motto was ‘The Welfare Of the People is the Highest Law’. However, 51% thought it was ‘Show Me Yours, I Will Show You Mine‘! We hope that respondents assumed this was a reference to firearms in the old days?!
  • Over half of Texans correctly said ‘Friendship’ is the state motto. Although 1 in 10 thought it was ‘Ready and Rarin’ to Go’, a well-known Texas saying.
  • West Virginia’s somewhat Lumbersexual motto is Mountaineers Are Always Free, although not surprisingly, over 1 in 3 (36%) thought it was ‘Country Roads Take Me Home’ – a popular John Denver song!
  • Lastly and hilariously, nearly 1 in 10 Kentuckians thought their official motto was ‘Land of Succulent Poultry’!

NC Roadtrippers Only Driving As Far As Virginia, Due to Gas Prices, Survey Finds

0
  • High gas prices and soaring inflation are reducing road trips by 272 miles.
  • North Carolina families planning road trips will travel 48% less distance on average.

A survey of 3,023 road trippers by FamilyDestinationsGuide.com has revealed the extent to which soaring gas prices and rising inflation will affect families’ vacation plans this summer. North Carolinians surveyed say their usual summer road trips will effectively be cut by almost half (by 48%). Usually each average roadtrip is 568 miles, however, this summer the average is expected to be 296 miles (272 miles less). This is equivalent to driving as far as Petersburg (VA), and back. And it is not only roadtrippers who are altering their summer vacation plans. Car rentals have had one of the largest price hikes, at around 40% more expensive than the average over the previous decade. Coupled with price increases in line with summer travel demand, those vacationing over summer are likely looking to dedicate fewer finances towards fuel and travel.

Those in Alaska and Wyoming said they would be traveling the closest to home. Vacationers here said they’ll be traveling 90% less distance than their road trips previously. In Alaska, this would be the equivalent of a short trip from the state capital, Juneau, to Saint Terese.

When it comes to concerns about summer, 75% said they’re more worried about high inflation costs and prices than they are about covid. Combined with overall increased costs of living, many vacationers are looking to save money wherever they can. In fact, nearly 3 in 4 respondents said they’re more likely to opt in for free activities (like board games at their hotel), rather than paid-for activities, over their vacation time this year. And nearly half said they’re more likely to eat at casual fast-food stops or street vendors when they go on summer vacation this year, as compared to sit-down restaurants and bars.

Given the exponentially high price of car rentals at the moment, 1 in 3 vacationers also said they’re more likely now to visit a destination that doesn’t require driving, which could in turn be a boost for beach destinations.

Additionally, nearly 3 in 4 regular road trippers admit they are more likely to skip their summer road trip this year, due to the high price of gas and inflation costs.

Eli Lilly Breaks Ground On New $1 Billion Drug Plant in Concord

0

This weekend, state and local officials gathered on Concord’s old Phillip Morris site to break ground on Eli Lilly’s new $1 billion, 800,000 square feet, 5-building drug manufacturing campus. The new facility will employ nearly 600 workers with an average salary of over $70k.

The company plans to start production at the new facility by 2024.

Eli Lilly is a American pharmaceutical manufacturer with an annual revenue of over $22 billion. Last year, the company was ranked 118 on the Fortune 500 list. They are the makers of Cialis, Cymbalta, Prozac, Thimerosal, Zyprexa, and dozens of other brand-name and generic drugs.

“We are thrilled to welcome Lilly as they usher in a new era of biotechnology in our region, with Concord as a leading destination for innovation and excellence,” said Concord Mayor Bill Dusch in a press release. “Lilly is a global leader in biotechnology, and we are proud to partner with them as they deliver hope to patients in our community and around the world through life-saving medical treatments manufactured right here in Concord.”

What do you think about the new facility?
