North Carolina has produced more than its fair share of well-known athletes over the years. But who are the most well-known?
Google Trends was used to determine which athletes were being searched for the most in our state, that list was then narrowed down by which names were from our state, and which region they were from – ultimately concluding who North Carolina’s most well-known athletes were for 2023.
‘NC athlete’ was defined as a person who was born or resided in North Carolina in their formative years for at least 10 years.

It’s a concerning statistic that over 22,000 deaths in the U.S. each year are a result of preventable deaths during patient hospitalization. Medical error often involves factors such as poor management or monitoring of medical conditions, errors linked to surgery and other procedures, and diagnostic errors; and while healthcare workers are dedicated to their medical duties, these errors may also be related to factors such as short-staffing, system defects or error in judgement.
Duffy & Duffy, a medical law firm, used the ‘Hospital Safety Grade’, along with state population data, to determine a state ranking from of where Americans have the best access to ‘Grade A’ level hospitals in terms of medical safety. The Safety Grade allocates a safety score (with A being the highest possible score, and F, the lowest) for hospitals in each state, which provides information on how likely patients are to experience injuries, accidents, harm, or error during hospitalization. Combined with state population figures, the data analysis compiled a ranking from 1 to 50, indicating which states have the greatest access to top grade healthcare.
It emerged that North Carolinians have among the best access to ‘Grade A’ hospitals in the country. The Tar Heel State emerged in 4th position overall, with a rate of 203,064 people per ‘Grade A’ hospital. North Carolina has a total of 89 hospitals in the state, of which a significant 59.8% (53 hospitals) scored ‘Grade A’ in terms of safety.
In 1st position is Mississippi, with the best access to safe healthcare – it has a rate of 192,308 people per ‘Grade A’ hospital. Mississippi has a total of 44 hospitals in the state, of which 35% (15 hospitals) had ‘Grade A’ safety scores.
As the world embraces the Fourth Industrial Revolution, disruptive innovations such as blockchains, artificial intelligence (AI), and cryptocurrencies are altering landscapes in remarkable ways. The impact of cryptocurrencies on our economy and on mainstream America in particular, deserves the spotlight. A prime example is the rise of Bitcoin, attracting the interests of investors, businesses, and everyday folk alike with its promise of a decentralized and secure peer-to-peer digital currency system.
Decoding Cryptocurrencies
They have been christened ‘digital gold,’ yet for some, cryptocurrencies remain cumbersome notions that are hard to grasp. At their core, cryptocurrencies are digital or virtual assets that employ cryptography for security. They don’t exist in physical form like dollars and cents, and neither are they controlled by centralized authorities, such as central banks. Instead, they rely on blockchain technology to gain decentralization, transparency, and immutability.
Cryptocurrencies in Mainstream America
Cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin in particular, are making a profound impact on several American sectors, including technology, finance, and e-commerce. Businesses are integrating cryptocurrencies into their payment systems, investors are diverting portions of their portfolios to include digital assets, and increasingly, everyday consumers are learning about and using cryptocurrencies.
Cryptocurrencies and Local Businesses
Small and medium businesses (SMBs) in cities like Charlotte are embracing cryptocurrencies in an effort to expand their customer base, streamline transactions, and lower costs. An excellent illustration can be found at Hyde Brewing, a coffee bar and brewery, which began accepting Bitcoin as a legitimate form of payment in 2017.
Dissecting the Cryptocurrency Market
In the past decade, the cryptocurrency market has transformed from a niche, tech-geek trend to a lucrative field harboring the potential for substantial financial returns. While Bitcoin has had its share of peaks and valleys, it has steadily gained value since its inception in 2009.
Online Platforms and Cryptocurrency Transactions
Various online platforms and services have emerged that accept cryptocurrencies, making it easier for Americans to perform digital transactions using these decentralized assets. Today, one such platform where cryptocurrencies have found adoption is BitcoinCasino.us. Here, users can utilize Bitcoin among other cryptocurrencies for various transactions, an integration advantageous for ensuring privacy, solidifying security, and speeding up transactions compared to traditional monetary systems.
America Embraces Cryptocurrencies
From city authorities considering cryptos for tax payments to NBA teams accepting Bitcoin for ticket purchases, mainstream America is steadily accepting cryptocurrencies. In fact, according to a survey conducted by the Global Blockchain Council and SurveyMonkey, 60% of Americans have heard of Bitcoin, and 5% own the digital currency.
The Future of Cryptocurrencies
While some pundits predict an imminent cryptocurrency bubble, others propose a future where cryptocurrencies co-exist with, or even replace traditional centrally controlled currencies. The integration of cryptocurrencies into everyday life brings about challenges, however, as the volatility and complexity of these digital assets raise concerns.
Wrapping Up
Ultimately, the exploration of this digital gold rush is ongoing, where new opportunities and challenges are continuously unearthed. It is therefore crucial for Mainstream America, including the residents of Charlotte, to stay informed and to understand the potentials and risks surrounding cryptocurrencies. In embracing a future that’s comfortable with technology and innovation, harnessing the might of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology might very well become a pivotal part of our lives, heralding a new era of financial independence, security, and convenience. Whether we find ourselves sipping coffee in Hyde Brewing or transacting online, we’re a part of a Revolution — one where cryptocurrencies form a crucial lynchpin.
Blackjack, a beloved card game with roots in Europe, has been a favorite among gamblers for centuries. From its origins in French salons to the bustling casino floors of Las Vegas mega casinos, the game’s appeal lies in its combination of luck & strategy. Interestingly, the evolution of the game has largely been shaped by its environment. In earlier days, the game rules and playing strategies were passed down by word of mouth or through rudimentary written guides.
But as technology advanced, online gaming companies like Playtech have been instrumental in bringing classic casino games, including blackjack, to the digital era. Their sophisticated software has allowed players worldwide to experience the thrill of blackjack, bridging the gap between traditional tables and modern online platforms.
Blackjack’s main objective remains simple: beat the dealer without going over (exceeding) 21. However, the strategies that players employ can be intricate and varied, especially when considering card counting and other advanced mathematical techniques. With the game being so accessible nowadays, both in physical casinos and online platforms, it’s no wonder it remains a top choice for many.
How Vegas’s Blackjack Tables Are Changing the Game: A Look at The Numbers
The sounds of slot machines, the roll of the dice, and the thrilling anticipation of the next card are what make Las Vegas the world’s gambling capital. But for blackjack enthusiasts, recent changes at the tables have raised eyebrows and questions about the future of this classic game across Sin City establishments.
Recall that the allure of blackjack has always been its balance of luck & strategy. The house edge is already in favor of the casinos, but skilled players attempt to mitigate this advantage (house edge) by employing basic strategy. Historically, this has allowed players a decent shot at walking away winners.
However, recent findings suggest that Vegas is shifting this balance even further in favor of the house. Options still exist for players to fine-tune their blackjack strategy.
The Shift in Blackjack Payouts
Traditionally, a player is given a 3-to-2 payout on getting blackjack (an Ace and a 10-value card), which means a $100 bet would return $150. This payout has been fundamental to the game and has contributed to its popularity among players.
Recently, John Mehaffey, founder of Vegas Advantage, reported that approximately two-thirds of blackjack tables now only offer a 6-to-5 payout. This seemingly small change has profound implications for the game’s odds. If a player bets $100 on blackjack at these tables, they only receive $120 instead of the traditional $150.
Mike Aponte, a seasoned blackjack expert, emphasizes the significance of this change: with a 6-to-5 payout, the house edge rises to a staggering 1.9%, nearly quadrupling the advantage for casinos.
The House Edge and Player Behavior
Statistics from the Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC) have shown that blackjack players lost more money last year than in nearly two decades. One might think this would deter players, but Las Vegas casinos witnessed a record year for casino gambling. The allure of the city, combined with the thrill of the game, keeps players coming back, even with the shifting odds.
Blackjack by the Numbers
Let’s consider some insightful blackjack statistics presented by Henry Tamburin:
Winning Percentage: Ignoring ties, a smart player can expect to win approximately 48% of their hands.
Losing Streaks: Players have a 14% chance of losing three consecutive hands, excluding ties.
Blackjack Frequency: A player can expect to receive blackjack once every 21 hands.
Player Bust Rate: Following basic blackjack strategy, players will bust about 16% of the time.
Dealer Bust Rate: The dealer busts roughly 28% of the time. However, unlike players, a busting dealer can still win if players bust first.
The Ever-Changing Las Vegas Odds
As Vegas transforms from just a gambling hotspot to a holistic tourist destination, it’s not surprising to see its casinos adapting their strategies to maximize profits. The statistics don’t lie; players face a challenging environment at today’s blackjack tables in Las Vegas, not so at online casinos.
However, the message remains clear: Approach the game with knowledge, stick to basic strategy, and, most importantly, play for entertainment rather than profit. Because in the long run, the house always has the upper hand. A well-structured approach featuring a budget and basic strategy is the way to go.
When adopting a pet, one must understand that it’s a lifetime vow to an additional family member who entirely depends on them for their well-being. Put, proper pet care is the foundation of responsible pet ownership.
Considering the love and happiness they bring to one’s life, caring for a furry friend shouldn’t be difficult.
What’s Required to Take Good Care of a Pet?
Having a plan is necessary as caring for a furry family member is a full-time job – keep in mind a pet owner can’t always be at home. Learning everything one can about a pet’s specific needs is a good start. Note that these needs will vary depending on the species.
One important thing that must be addressed when caring for a pet is regular visits to a veterinarian. As such, you should find the best mobile vet near you when your furry friend falls ill.
Regular Visits to Your Local Vet
A furry family member, be it a cat or a dog, needs a health check bi-annually as they’ve got a much shorter lifespan than humans. Pets could age several years within six months compared to humans. A young pet may require a more systematic visit schedule to the vet than their adult counterparts as they need to be current on their vaccine shots.
Consider Microchipping Your Pet
Irrespective of how responsible a pet owner is, it’s always essential to consider microchipping their pet/pets. This is a quick process that a local vet can do – it ranges from GPS tracking devices to implants under the pet’s skin and ID collar tags. These devices help find a pet in case they go wandering off. Additionally, when scanned, they show the identity of a pet.
Provide Sufficient Opportunities for Pet Exercise/Socializing
Ample exercise is also crucial in proper pet care. It’s essential in a pet’s physical and mental health. By being mentally and physically fit, pets can participate more in the activities they love. Pets are naturally social, so they need to spend quality time with their owner. This will help the owner understand their needs and identify early signs of ailments. Lastly, spending time with your pet goes a long way toward eliminating unwanted behavioral patterns.
Unprecedented heat waves can leave you hot and bothered, even with the AC blasting. That’s because every time you crank up the AC, your utility bills spike to match the blistering temperatures outside. How long can you keep paying these premium prices?
Your little air conditioner that could is under a lot of pressure these days, and it might not be enough to handle today’s oppressive heat. Retrofitting your home and budget may be an answer to climate change’s effects on your finances.
Why Can’t You Just Borrow Money and Be Done with It?
Online loans can conveniently boost your budget, so you have more money to handle urgent expenses. But they also don’t target the real source of your financial woes: ongoing energy costs due to extreme heat. These issues are monthly problems, and there’s no way you can borrow money every month to handle expected bills.
So, what role does an online loan play in your utility bills? Reserve them for emergencies.
Let’s say a hidden plumbing leak causes your water consumption to quadruple in one month. Not only do you have to deal with this unexpected spike, but you also must call out for a plumber to repair the leak.
If your emergency fund can’t handle both expenses at once, you may visit a website like MoneyKey to learn about online loans. If they sound helpful, you can try to apply for a loan online.
The ongoing cost of battling rising heat, on the other hand, isn’t an emergency like the one shared above. The online loan experts at MoneyKey recommend checking out their partner SpringFour, a self-service tool that connects borrowers with free, local resources that help reduce utility costs, among other expenses.
How to Retrofit Your House for Extreme Heat
Your biggest fight against the cost of climate change is insulation. A well-sealed house keeps the hot air out, so your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard to keep your house cool.
Small Jobs and Habits:
You can improve your insulation with very little investment. All you need is some weather stripping or caulking and a dry afternoon to seal drafts around your windows and doors. This prevents some of the energy loss from these points in your home.
You can help reduce energy loss by closing your blinds to shut out the sun and its greenhouse effect. However, your thermostat might promise the biggest savings for zero cost. The Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to 78°F while you’re home and 88°F while you’re away at work. This simple habit could save as much as 10 percent on your AC costs.
Bigger Investments:
Your choice of window could cut the energy loss from windows and doors, which accounts for approximately 30 percent of the energy used by your home. Retrofitting your home with energy-efficient, three-paned windows creates a more effective barrier between your cool rooms and the stifling outdoors.
Another big job is replacing outdated insulation in your attic and walls. If you live in an older home, your insulation may not reflect today’s energy codes, so it may be letting out more AC than you think. According to one study, adding new insulation delivers energy savings of 10 to 45 percent.
Bottom Line:
The more money you have to pour into renovations, the more energy savings you can enjoy. Start with the easy stuff first. Then, consider how you can tweak your budget to save towards these major renovations, and learn about government programs that help you retrofit your home on a budget.
Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton was signed by the Carolina Panthers earlier this year to, not only offer support to the newer quarterbacks on the roster but also compete for the starting role in the team.
This is the 35-year-old’s fifth franchise in the NFL after spells with the Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, and New Orleans Saints. He is one of the most experienced QBs in the league.
Dalton Can Help Carolina Recovery
Although the Panthers finished the 2022/23 campaign with a losing 7-10 record, there were some positive signs last season. They finished second in their division, and it was the first time since 2018 that they had won seven games.
With Dalton on their roster, Carolina is +350 in the online betting to win the NFC South this season. It has been eight years since they last lifted the title.
How much game time Dalton sees in the early stages of the season will be documented at Paddy Power News and other sports outlets covering the NFL. However, even if he does not take to the field, he will be on the sidelines with a headset on, offering his support to the starting QB. That’s a role the likes of Alex Smith, Case Keenum, and Ryan Fitzpatrick all did well at the back end of their careers.
Early Success in NFL
This will be Dalton’s 13th consecutive year involved in the NFL after being drafted by the Bengals in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He was named as a Pro Bowler in 2011, 2014, and 2016.
Dalton’s best year in the NFL so far came in 2013. He finished the campaign with 33 passing touchdowns, 4,293 passing yards, and he helped his team qualify for the playoffs with an 11-5 record. Unfortunately for Cincinnati, they were beaten by the San Diego Chargers 27-10 in the Wildcard Round.
The former TCU QB led the Bengals to the offseason in each of the opening five years he was with the franchise. Sadly for him, he was not able to win a playoff game with Cincinnati.
Break with Cowboys Due to Dak’s Injury
Dalton showed how useful he can be in a backup role when he was with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. Their starting QB, Dak Prescott, picked up an injury in week five against the New York Giants which ruled him out for the rest of the season. He came off the bench to help them win that game against their NFC East rivals 37-34, as Bleacher Report documented.
Although the season did not end the way Dallas would have wanted, Dalton won four of the nine games he started, with victories coming over the Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals, San Francisco 49ers, and Philadelphia Eagles.
The way Dalton played in Texas earned him a contract with the Chicago Bears the following season, while in 2022, he was named as the starting QB for the New Orleans Saints.
Carolina fans have a lot to be excited about in 2023 and beyond. They have drafted players that will hopefully take them back to the Super Bowl, and those potential stars will learn a lot from the likes of Dalton and the other veteran players this season.
