Which to Choose – The Camino from Portugal or Sarria?

0

Embarking on the Camino de Santiago is a journey filled with spiritual reflection, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural experiences. With various routes available, choosing the right one can be challenging. Two popular options are the Camino from Portugal and the Camino from Sarria. Let’s look at the highlights of both routes.

Camino from Portugal: The Coastal and Scenic Route

The Camino Portugués, starting from Portugal, is a route that appeals to those seeking a blend of coastal beauty and historical charm. This route begins in Lisbon or Porto, with the latter being a more common starting point due to its manageable distance of approximately 240 kilometers to Santiago de Compostela.

Strengths of the Camino from Portugal

  • Stunning Coastal Views: The Portuguese route, particularly the Coastal Way (Caminho da Costa), offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Pilgrims can enjoy walking along sandy beaches, through quaint fishing villages, and experiencing the refreshing sea breeze.
  • Cultural Richness: This route is steeped in Portuguese and Galician culture. Highlights include the historic cities of Porto and Pontevedra, known for their medieval architecture, vibrant markets, and delectable local cuisine.
  • Varied Landscapes: From lush forests and rolling hills to serene riverbanks and rugged coastlines, the Portuguese Camino offers diverse scenery that keeps the journey visually stimulating.

Highlights of the Camino from Portugal

  • Porto: Known for its charming old town, historic bridges, and famous port wine, Porto is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a delightful starting point.
  • Valença and Tui: These twin border towns, one in Portugal and the other in Spain, provide a fascinating blend of cultures and impressive fortresses.
  • Santiago de Compostela: The journey culminates in this iconic city, where the awe-inspiring cathedral awaits, marking the end of a spiritual and transformative pilgrimage.

Camino from Sarria: The Traditional and Social Route

The Camino Francés from Sarria is the most popular starting point for those wishing to complete the minimum 100 kilometers required to receive the Compostela certificate. This route is ideal for those who want a shorter but equally rewarding pilgrimage experience.

Strengths of the Camino from Sarria

Accessibility and Convenience: Sarria is easily accessible by train and bus, making it a convenient starting point for pilgrims who have limited time or are new to long-distance walking.

Social Atmosphere: This section of the Camino Francés is bustling with fellow pilgrims, providing ample opportunities for camaraderie, shared stories, and forming lifelong friendships.

Highlights of the Camino from Sarria

  • Sarria: A charming town with numerous historical sites, including the 13th-century Church of Santa Mariña and the medieval bridge of Ponte Áspera.
  • Portomarín: Known for its unique church, Igrexa de San Nicolás, which was moved stone by stone to its current location during the construction of a reservoir.
  • Melide: Famous for its pulpo a la gallega (Galician octopus), Melide is a culinary highlight of the Camino.
  • Arzúa: This town offers a taste of local cheeses and a chance to relax before the final stretch to Santiago.

Choosing Your Camino

The decision between the Camino from Portugal and the Camino from Sarria depends on your personal preferences and goals. If you crave coastal scenery, cultural immersion, and a slightly longer journey, the Portuguese route is perfect. For those seeking a shorter, more social experience with historical depth, starting from Sarria is the ideal choice.

Many tourists go to andbeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve for comfortable accommodations and game drive opportunities. You, too, can walk this path. However, let’s see what awaits you here.

  • Game reserve experiences

Professionals will drive you in an open 4×4 vehicle to enjoy the magnificent wildlife sightings from a safe spot. You can also expect bush walks and other adventures. Phinda is called Seven Worlds of Wonder because it features seven different habitats. Its wilderness consists of forest, wetland, woodland, and grassland surrounded by mountains and rivers. You will also encounter pans and marshes. &BEYOND Phinda also promotes sustainable travel, focusing on expanding black rhino sites, cheetah populations, leopard protection, etc. Hence, it can be another reason to explore this side. When you go on a game drive in the open-air vehicle that affords a 360-degree view of the area, it’s easy to spot giraffes, lions, elephants, and rhinos.

While the thrill of close encounters with wild animals is undeniable, staying in the vehicle as they pass by will be wise. By adhering to the rules of the jungle, your wildlife experiences will only get better. Imagine witnessing a herd of elephants in a mud hole, a sight that will stay with you for years. From zebra squabbles to baby rhino frolics and giraffes causing traffic jams to sudden buffalo stampedes, these moments can define your safari experience in the game reserve.

  • Accommodation in Phinda Game Reserve

You can choose Forest Lodge, homestead, Zuka Lodge, Mountain Lodge, and Rock Lodge. Scroll through safari.com for an idea about them. The forest lodge occupies a strategic location between two habitats in the reserve, including the grasslands and sand forest. At the same time, the outdoor arrangements let you indulge in open safaris, bush walks, night turtle drives, on-foot tracking of black rhinos, ocean and scuba safaris, etc.

Carolina Hurricanes Overcome NY Rangers in Third-Period Blitz to Force Game 6

0

Yesterday the Carolina Hurricanes were facing elimination in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup playoff series, starting the game as the underdogs against the NY Rangers.

Our chances at advancing were looking even more bleak after trailing 1-0 into the third period, with Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin in top form.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Hurricanes Centre Jordan Staal broke through with a dramatic slap shot into the back of the net.

Staal’s goal came after a power play, assisted by Dmitry Orlov, marking his first of the playoffs. Kuznetsov added another on a rebound, and Martinook scored off a pass from Martin Necas. Necas sealed the victory with an empty-net goal as the Rangers pulled Shesterkin for an extra attacker.

The win narrowed the Rangers’ series lead to 3-2, with Game 6 set for Thursday at PNC Arena.

Despite the Rangers leading the series and having home-ice advantage, the Hurricanes showed the world they won’t be underestimated.

NC Just Announced Plans To Allow ‘Over-The-Counter’ Contraceptive Services In Pharmacies

0

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services just announced plans to allow residents to get contraceptives ‘over-the-counter’ in pharmacies.

The new initiative will allow NC residents to access contraceptive services directly at independent and chain pharmacies without a prescription. Services will include counseling, education, dispensing of contraceptives, and connections to ongoing care if necessary.

Ingles Markets Pharmacies will start in select western counties by the end of May 2024, and Walgreens in central and eastern counties by the end of June 2024. Residents can find participating pharmacies using this online map.

“Expanding access to reproductive health care improves health outcomes for mothers, babies and families in North Carolina,” said NC Health and Human Services Secretary Kody H. Kinsley. “Thanks to the many pharmacies across the state that stepped up to ensure the people in their communities have access to contraception, pre-natal vitamins and other health care resources they need to thrive.”

NCDHHS has partnered with the UNC School of Pharmacy and the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists to support pharmacies in adopting these protocols. Additionally, NC Medicaid began enrolling pharmacists as providers and paying a counseling code as of January 2024.

Rental Markets Around Charlotte With The Biggest “Bang For Your Buck”

0

As the pandemic made living space a top priority, the site RentCafe analyzed how much room renters can get for $1,500 in the largest U.S. cities. While Winston-Salem is the only city from North Carolina that made it to the Top 20 Cities that offer the largest spaces for a $1,500 rent, they looked at the most sought-after metro in the state – Charlotte.

Here’s what they found out about Charlotte:

  • For the rental apartments in Charlotte, apartment dwellers pay an average rent of $1,543 for 941 sq.ft. Although among the 100 big cities analyzed, Charlotte stands right in the middle with the 46th largest rental apartments, the suburbs offer much more space for the same budget.
  • At the other end of the spectrum, Statesville rents some of the most generous spaces: one sq.ft. for one dollar, or 1,431 sq.ft. for a monthly rent of $1,500. The average rent paid here is $889 in exchange for 848 sq.ft., one of the lowest in the metro area.
  • The next cities in the Charlotte Metro where renters can get the biggest bang for their buck are Salisbury, Monroe, Gastonia, Rockhill and Kannapolis – renters in all of them can secure around 1000-1250 sq.ft. for 1.5K.
