Red Bull Dance Your Style announces its return to Charlotte for a City Qualifier. A field of sixteen dancers from across the region will put their best foot forward in head-to-head competition, as they attempt to advance their way to the US National Final in Atlanta, Georgia.

Red Bull Dance Your Style is a global all-styles street dance competition with a unique battle format. The event brings together the best dancers from the nation who represent a multitude of mainstream and underground dance styles such as popping, waacking, turfing, house, footwork, clowning, and more. Through a bracket-style competition, dancers battle one-on-one to surprise music selections, showcasing the spontaneous nature of street dance and challenging competitors to adapt their moves on the spot. With no planned choreography, pre-selected music, or a panel of judges, dancers must win the crowd’s vote to move to the next round.

In 2024 Red Bull Dance Your Style is continuing its legacy of highlighting street dance communities across the county by expanding its competition cycle to include nineteen city auditions hosted throughout the US. These City Qualifiers give dancers of any experience level, background, and style the chance to compete on the official Red Bull Dance Your Style stage.

Winners of the City Qualifier will advance to one of the Regional Qualifiers in Chicago, Memphis, Boston, or Los Angeles. There, dancers take center stage and showcase the unique styles and iconic dances born out of their city, battling for a chance to compete at the National Final. From the captivating footwork of Memphis Jookin to the raw intensity of krumping and everything in between, Red Bull Dance Your Style is more than a competition; it’s a celebration of local dance scenes and diverse talents across the country.

It takes dance battles to the next level, giving dancers of any background a space to show off their unique style and connect with other artists from around the world. Following the qualifier season, the Red Bull Dance Your Style National Final and Weekender USA in Atlanta will set the stage for regional champions, runners-up, and a line-up of invited dancers (wildcards) to battle it out for the U.S. national championship title and the opportunity to compete at the World Final in Mumbai, India.

According to a new study which ranks the country’s 20 best cities for career flexibility, Charlotte ranks among the top.

The Real Estate analyst firm Commercial Cafe compiled the study using indicators in the following categories: flexibility opportunities, commuting & remote readiness, and career growth & economics.

Charlotte placed #10 overall for flexible workers with a total of 43.5 points. 

• 30.9% of Charlotte’s employees work remotely, the city placing 3^rd in the regional top 10 for this metric.
• Employees who commute to work do so in about 24.1 minutes each way, representing the 3rd-shortest travel time to work among our regional top 10.
• Charlotte placed 3^rd for its ratio of libraries per 100,000 residents among the top 10 Southern cities for flexible workers.
• The city placed 3^rd for its cost of living index of 96.7 among the regional top 10.
• Charlotte has roughly 56% high speed internet coverage, the city placing 4^th among the top 10 Southern cities for career flexibility.
• The city ranked 4^th among the regional top 10 for its job support services ratio of 2 per 100,000 residents.
• Charlotte claimed the 4^th-lowest unemployment rate among the top 10 regional entries with 3.3%.

NoDa’s Matheson Avenue is about to get a major makeover to become far less car friendly in favor of bikers and pedestrians.

Last night, the Charlotte City Council approved a $12.9 million project that will reduce the road from four car lanes down to just two, and add 2 bike lanes to either side of the street.

The city is hoping the change will promote more cycling along Matheson Avenue and throughout NoDa in general.

Objectives of the Project:

• Create an east-west bicycle route from the Shamrock Drive Complete Street project to the Cross Charlotte Trail at Jordan Place.
• Lessen Matheson Avenue’s impediment to north-south pedestrian transit, adding more crossing points along the route.
• Enhance safety by calming traffic and lowering vehicle speeds in the area.

Community Engagement:

Local residents and business proprietors will be invited to participate in upcoming public meetings to express their views. The project team will also periodically send updates via postcards and the project’s website.

According to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Charlotte region saw one of it’s largest net positive migration years in 2023.

Mecklenburg County added about 32 people per day in 2023, making our region one of the fastest growing in the nation. Analysis shows that 60% of American counties experienced net migration gains between 2022 and 2023, up from 52% the previous year.

Overall, Charlotte came in right behind Orlando, with Charlotte gaining about 50,500 residents and Orlando adding nearly 55,000 residents in 2023.

Nationally, the overall loss across 1,055 counties decreased to 0.02% in 2023 from 0.09% in 2022. Small counties declined by 0.27% compared to 0.35% in 2022, while larger counties grew by 0.36% on average in 2023.

Looking ahead, experts anticipate continued growth in areas like Austin, Texas. South Carolina counties in the Charlotte metro, including York, Lancaster, and Chester, also saw notable population boosts.

A massive comet, nicknamed “devil comet”, will become visible for the first time in 71 years during the upcoming total solar eclipse next month.

The comet, officially designated as 12P/Pons-Brooks, is a cryovolcanic body characterized by its formation of two “horn”-like structures from ice and gas, along with periodic explosive events.

According to NASA, comets are celestial objects composed of dust, frozen gases, ice, and rocks that coalesced after the solar system’s formation. The “devil comet” is approaching its next perihelion, the point in its orbit closest to the sun, where it will be most luminous, expected on April 21. This celestial occurrence aligns with the total solar eclipse on April 8 across North America, casting a shadow from Texas to Maine as the moon obscures the sun.

NASA suggests that the total darkness during the eclipse might offer sky enthusiasts a unique opportunity to observe the night sky’s stars, planets, and possibly the 12P/Pons-Brooks comet as it makes its journey through the solar system. The comet is slated to make its nearest approach to Earth on June 2, providing another chance to witness it. However, its visibility may decrease compared to during the eclipse due to its distance from the sun. Similar to the well-known Halley’s comet, which orbits the sun every 76 years, 12P/Pons-Brooks is classified as a short-period comet with an orbital cycle of 71 years, last observed in 1954.

Researchers have determined that the “devil comet” has a minimum diameter of 17 kilometers (about 10.5 miles). It underwent a significant brightening in July 2023, becoming 100 times more luminous, and has exhibited several explosive bursts on subsequent dates, highlighting its dynamic nature.
