Charlotte Takes #8 in Top 10 Best Cities for International Students

Students worldwide choose to study in the United States due to the many academic opportunities available and the transformative experiences they can have in the city they study in.

With that in mind, the latest CommercialCafe study sought out to identify America’s best cities for international students, ranking the cities based on three categories: international student community & support, affordability & green commuting and fun & recreation.

To reflect a fair comparison, they segmented the cities into two population brackets: small to mid-sized and large.

Charlotte boasts the title of the eighth-best city for international students in the country, with an overall score of 43.2 points. Here are some key findings:

  • With average monthly rent and food prices being the second lowest among the top 10, Charlotte takes the 2nd spot in the affordability and commuting category, behind only Houston.
  • The city ranks 4th for the support establishments density metric, with 103 educational support services for every 100,000 undergraduates — a higher ratio than LA, Seattle, Philadelphia and Boston.
  • With a density of recreational establishments with 297.8 venues per 100,000 residents, Charlotte also came in 6th in the fun and recreation category.

NC Takes Bold Steps to Erase $4 Billion in Medical Debt for Residents

NC state leaders have just announced plans to significantly reduce the $4+ billion in medical debt that North Carolina residents are now burdened with.

NCDHHS just requested new approval from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for conditions hospitals must meet to receive enhanced Medicaid funds. These include relieving existing medical debt and preventing future debt for low- and middle-income residents. Hospitals opting out will receive standard funding.

Medical debt affects 41% of US adults, especially in Black, Hispanic, and rural communities. North Carolina hospitals hold over $4 billion in debt. Upon CMS approval, hospitals meeting the conditions will qualify for enhanced payments under the Healthcare Access and Stabilization Program (HASP).

“Large medical bills from sickness or injury can cripple the finances of North Carolinians, particularly those who are already struggling,” said Governor Cooper in a press release. “Freeing people from medical debt can be life changing for families, as well as boost the overall economic health of North Carolina.”

The new NC policies include:

  • Relieving uncollectible medical debt since January 1, 2014, for non-Medicaid individuals with incomes below 350% of the federal poverty level (FPL) or debt exceeding 5% of annual income.
  • Relieving unpaid medical debt since January 1, 2014, for Medicaid-enrolled individuals.
Providing medical bill discounts between 50-100% for patients with incomes at or below 300% FPL.
  • Automatically enrolling eligible individuals in financial assistance programs.
  • Prohibiting the sale of medical debt for consumers with incomes at or below 300% FPL to debt collectors.
  • Not reporting covered debt to credit agencies.

NCDHHS recently partnered with Undue Medical Debt to facilitate the new relief.

NC Wildlife Commission Urging Public To Submit Any Potential Hellbender Sightings

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission is asking for the public’s help in finding North Carolina’s disappearing Hellbenders.

The elusive creatures are extremely sensitive to poor water quality since they breath through their skin, which is a large reason for their steady decline, along with overall habitat loss.

The “snot otter” or “Alleghany alligator” averages about 16 to 17 inches in length, with some adults growing to over 24 inches long.

They sent out a press release asking anyone who spots a Hellbender to “note the location (physical location or GPS coordinates) and take a photo, if possible”

According to the press release, “hellbenders are listed as species of special concern in North Carolina. Because of this listing, it is illegal to take, possess, transport or sell a hellbender or to attempt to do so. A violation is a Class 1 misdemeanor, which can result in a fine and up to 120 days in jail.”

If you find one, please email the location and a picture to to Williams at lori.williams@ncwildlife.org, or call the Commission Wildlife Interaction Helpline (866) 318-2401.

2024/25 Premier League: Who will be the relegation candidates?

0

The new Premier League season is just weeks away as football fans gear up for the return of England’s most prestigious competition. There has been plenty of movement between managers and players ahead of the new campaign, making Premier League betting all the more challenging due to the sheer unpredictability of the top-flight.

Last season’s relegation battle was a rollercoaster of emotion, and despite their best efforts, Luton Town eventually faced the drop, with Rob Edwards and his side back in the Championship after their Cinderella story climbing the football pyramid.

Alongside them, Sheffield United and Burnley suffered relegation, with three newly promoted sides Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton joining the Premier League.

Staying up is no easy task, and in this article, we assess the relegation candidates for the 2024/25 season.

Leicester City

We begin with the side most likely to face the drop – former Premier League champions Leicester. The Foxes were relegated in the 2022/23 season but bounced back at the first time of asking under Enzo Maresca. However, with the Italian joining Chelsea ahead of next term, Steve Cooper has traded one side of the East Midlands for another, as the former Nottingham Forest man agreed to take over at the King Power Stadium.

While the Championship winners played a dominant brand of football on route to the Premier League, and their side boasts several internationals such as Belgium centre-back Wout Faes, the loss of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Chelsea and the ongoing uncertainty of whether they begin the campaign with a points deduction may prove to be too much for Cooper’s side. Jamie Vardy isn’t getting any younger leading the line and Leicester could well find themselves becoming a yo-yo club.

Nottingham Forest

From Cooper’s current side to his former employers, Nottingham Forest survived by the skin of their teeth last season despite spending over £130 million in the transfer market for the second successive season.

For all the talent they boast on paper, things were rather bleak at the City Ground for the majority of last season, and if Morgan Gibbs-White leaves, Forest lose their catalyst for creativity.

Nuno Espírito Santo has shown he can deal with the pressure of relegation, having guided Wolverhampton Wanderers through their initial years in the top-flight back in 2018, but the increased demand to perform could put the pressure on the Portuguese coach, with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis showing he can be ruthless when the going gets tough.

Ipswich

Ipswich Town return to the Premier League for the first time since 2002 after they secured automatic promotion via a second-place finish in the Championship and the Tractor Boys were reassured by manager Kieran McKenna signing a contract extension at Portman Road.

José Mourinho’s former assistant impressed when he secured promotion, but his lack of experience could prove costly with a squad severely lacking talent.

Ipswich play a possession brand of football that is similar to Burnley, and you get the sense that if they don’t hit the ground running it could be tough for them to try and evolve tactically mid-way through the season when the pressure is already on.

Portman Road will host the first Saturday fixture of the new season when they host Liverpool, and it will be interesting to see if they try and play the same way against Arne Slot’s side – with the Dutchman looking to impress in his debut as Red’s manager.

If Ipswich are unable to invest in the transfer market, it could be a short-lived stint at the top for Mckenna and co.

A Detailed Review of Chinese Knives

Chinese knives are not only indispensable utensils in one’s kitchen; they also symbolize a link to the ancient past and a traditional approach to food preparation. From the meat and bone cleaver to the vegetable and chef’s knives each represent a marriage of artistic flair, skill and necessity that is well established in China.

The details of understanding Chinese knives include the types of knives, their complex and creative designs, material selection, cultural values of the knives, functionality, and the progressive developments that define current knife versions. Knowledge of these aspects does not only apply in the preparation of food better but opens a rich cultural and practical dimension in Chinese knife-making.

Types of Chinese Knives

Chinese knives include an extensive category of knives where each of them is individually sharpened to perform well on specific tasks in the kitchen. The most famous one would be the cleaver also referred to as Caidao. It has a rectangular broad blade type, which is long lasting and best used in cutting through bones and tough meat pieces while thin types are best for vegetable and herbs slicing.

Vegetable knives, for instance, the Nakiri, have a thin blade that is flat so that delicate vegetables are not crushed while cutting but rather sliced uniformly, ideal for the stir fry or salads. There are certain knives like Chinese chef’s knife that can be used for both cutting and slicing and are highly useful in professional culinary arenas and home kitchens too owing to their appreciation of detailed work and precise control.

Design and Construction

In Chinese knife design, efficiency, practicality, and sturdiness are the key values that define this particular style. Cleavers are usually characterized by a wide blade that narrows at its end to a thin, sharp edge made from high carbon steel known for its ability to retain its edge.

This design does not only allow for monumental chopping but also for the construction of a strong and easily to maintain knife. Handles are crafted from a variety of materials, including hardwoods like rosewood or synthetic composites, chosen for their durability and comfort during prolonged use. Modern designs often incorporate ergonomic shapes and non-slip materials to enhance grip and reduce hand fatigue, catering to diverse culinary preferences and professional demands for precision and control.

Materials Used

The materials used in Chinese knife-making play a critical role in their performance, longevity, and aesthetic appeal. High-carbon steel remains a cornerstone for traditional knives, prized for its ability to achieve and maintain a sharp edge through repeated use.

Stainless steel variants offer enhanced corrosion resistance, making them suitable for humid kitchen environments and ensuring durability with minimal maintenance. Damascus steel, with its characteristic layered patterns and superior strength, combines aesthetic beauty with practicality, appealing to both chefs and collectors alike. Handles crafted from hardwoods, such as ebony or durable synthetics, provide ergonomic comfort and secure grips that enhance precision and control, essential for achieving consistent results in culinary endeavors.

Uses and Techniques

Chinese knives excel in a multitude of culinary techniques that are fundamental to Chinese cuisine, showcasing their versatility and adaptability in the kitchen. The robust cleaver is adept at handling heavy-duty tasks such as chopping through bones and tough cuts of meat, reflecting its role as a cornerstone of Chinese culinary traditions.

Techniques such as the rocking motion leverage the cleaver’s broad blade for continuous chopping, maximizing efficiency and precision in food preparation. Vegetable knives like the Nakiri excel in delicate slicing and precise cutting of vegetables, ensuring uniformity in texture and appearance essential for enhancing visual appeal in dishes. Mastery of these techniques not only enhances culinary skills but also underscores the importance of selecting the right knife for achieving desired results with consistency and finesse.

Cultural Significance

Beyond their practical utility, Chinese knives hold deep cultural significance, serving as symbols of craftsmanship and culinary heritage that span generations. The cleaver, in particular, symbolizes resilience and adaptability in Chinese cooking, embodying the skill and precision valued in traditional culinary arts learn more

Passed down through families, knives often become cherished heirlooms that connect generations to their cultural roots and culinary traditions. Understanding the cultural context enriches appreciation for Chinese knives as more than mere kitchen tools but as embodiments of culinary artistry and cultural identity, transcending their role in everyday cooking to represent the essence of Chinese culinary philosophy and craftsmanship.

Comparison with Other Knife Types

Comparing Chinese knives with counterparts from other culinary traditions provides insights into their distinct characteristics and applications across global cuisine. Unlike Japanese knives, which emphasize precise cutting and single-bevel designs, Chinese knives prioritize versatility and robustness to accommodate a wide range of culinary tasks. The broad blade of the cleaver contrasts with the thinner, specialized blades of Japanese knives, illustrating cultural preferences and culinary techniques unique to each tradition. Each knife type excels in its respective culinary context, reflecting the diversity and innovation inherent in global knife-making traditions and their adaptation to diverse culinary practices worldwide.

Maintenance and Care

Proper maintenance is essential for preserving the performance and longevity of Chinese knives, ensuring they remain sharp, reliable, and safe for use over time. Regular sharpening sessions using sharpening stones or electric sharpeners maintain the blade’s sharp edge and cutting efficiency, minimizing the risk of accidents and ensuring consistent results in food preparation. Storing knives in designated knife blocks or on magnetic strips protects blades from damage and ensures easy access during busy kitchen activities.

Prompt cleaning after each use prevents food residue and moisture buildup, reducing the risk of corrosion and maintaining hygiene standards in the kitchen environment. By adopting proper maintenance practices, chefs and culinary enthusiasts can prolong the lifespan of their Chinese knives while maintaining optimal performance for professional and home cooking applications.

Modern Adaptations and Trends

Innovation continues to shape the evolution of Chinese knife design, integrating modern materials and ergonomic enhancements to meet evolving culinary preferences and technological advancements. Contemporary adaptations include ergonomic handle designs crafted from lightweight materials such as fiberglass-reinforced polymers or thermoplastic elastomers, providing enhanced grip and comfort during prolonged use.

Advanced manufacturing techniques enable the production of knives with ultra-sharp blades made from high-tech alloys or ceramic materials, offering superior edge retention and durability without the need for frequent sharpening. Hybrid designs combine elements of Chinese and Western knife-making traditions, catering to diverse culinary techniques and preferences worldwide while embracing the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship that define Chinese knife-making traditions.

Conclusion

Chinese knives epitomize the fusion of craftsmanship, functionality, and cultural heritage in culinary tools. From the robust cleaver to specialized vegetable knives and chef’s knives, each type reflects centuries of refinement and adaptation in Chinese culinary traditions.

Delving into the intricacies of design, materials, uses, and care enhances understanding and appreciation for these versatile tools. Whether used in traditional cooking or contemporary culinary practices, Chinese knives continue to inspire innovation and elevate the art of Chinese cuisine globally, ensuring their enduring legacy in kitchens around the world.

Rapidly Intensifying Cat 4 Hurricane Beryl Is Already Breaking Several Records

Beryl’s rapid intensification into a major hurricane signals a severe Atlantic storm season ahead.

In just two days, Beryl transformed from an unnamed tropical depression to a Category 4 hurricane, the second most powerful on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Beryl is now the earliest storm to reach Category 4 strength, breaking records dating back to 1851. It’s the strongest June hurricane in the Atlantic and the first major June hurricane since Alma in 1966. Beryl’s rapid intensification also marks the most easterly formation of a June hurricane since 1933.

On Sunday, Beryl became a Cat 4 hurricane and quickly advanced towards the southeastern Caribbean.

Warnings have now been issued for Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, while Martinique and Tobago received tropical storm warnings.

NHS officials are reminding all residents in Atlantic Coast states to be prepared for potential future storms.

Massive Great White Sharks Are Now Swarming Around North Carolina Beaches

If you’re heading to the beach this week, be careful going near the water. Dozens of great white sharks are now starting to swarm around the Carolina coast – including some of the biggest currently tracked in the Atlantic Ocean.

Researchers with OCEARCH are reporting a total of 23 Great Whites within 50 miles of the North Carolina Coastline that had previously tagged with electronic trackers.

6 of the sharks in the swarm are among the biggest ever tagged in the Atlantic, ranging in size from 10 feet to 15 feet in length.

“In our studies, we have tagged about 43 sharks. And six of the largest ones are off of the Carolinas,” OCEARCH’s Dr. Robert Hueter told CBS News.

The biggest of the group, Luna, is now swimming dangerously close to North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

This video of Luna was captured just off the coast of Charleston by a group of amateur fishermen (footage of Luna begins at 2:45):

If you’re on swimming at any North Carolina beaches in the next few weeks, experts recommend taking extra precautions, including removing all shiny jewelry, wearing magnetic shark repellents, and avoiding wearing colorful swimsuits.

Your risk will increase if you go near the water at dusk or at night.

How to turn your travels into successful video content using modern tools

Travel videos are not just a great way to capture your observations and impressions on the go, but also a promising idea for earning. Travel vlogs resemble entries in a personal blog, based on the traveler’s personal experiences, made in a natural and relaxed manner. And the functional vjump.com/services/video-effects-app provides ample opportunities for processing such content.

For the audience, vlogs are attractive because they are built on trust, show things “from the inside,” and often provide useful tips for travelers. They don’t have a rigid format and structure — so, starting with a vlog, you can unfold as a creative personality, and therefore get maximum enjoyment from the process. Here will go the brightest impressions, sketches from local life, thoughts that come to you on the road.

There should be features

Perhaps, by honing your skills, you’ll decide to dedicate your blog, website, or channel to a specific theme or, on the contrary, aim for something more ambitious. And for the initial attempts, thematic videos of short duration can be a good solution.

For example, where in a popular tourist area you can eat something exotic inexpensively, or how to quickly rent a car abroad, or what places a nature lover should visit in a specific region.

The best choice for a niche video is a topic that you understand and are truly passionate about. Then your videos will have every chance to gather many views from grateful viewers and attract new subscribers to the channel.

Editing and processing the footage

This is the most interesting part. Here you’ll have to restrain yourself from “cramming” into the video everything you consider successful. To start with, choose a tiktok editing app and follow these principles:

  • Animated text is an ideal way to inform your viewers about the exact location, names of holiday destinations, share impressions, and prices. You can customize the text using different fonts, colors, layouts, and sizes according to the style and proportions of your video.
  • High-quality background music will enhance the mood of your video and its tone with just a few clicks. Choose a soundtrack for your video in the tiktok video editor or effects, such as signals, applause, explosions, chirping, etc.
  • Mix video clips and photos to create a dynamic travel video. Overlay your favorite memorable images as a background. Save time by starting with a video template, or start editing from scratch.
  • To add transitions between clips, go to the tab available on the toolbar or create your own during edit tiktok video. To see how a particular transition looks, simply click on it. In the list of transition options, find the effect that suits your video with the best travel moments.

Vjump, the best tiktok editing app, will help you process videos. This software is very easy to understand. Fast file upload, many filter options, transitions, effects, and titles for your videos. Very easy editing, cutting fragments, the ability to add voiceover and music, merge multiple video tracks on the screen — this is a small list of options available here.
