App State Scientific Team Films UFO Footage Over North Carolina’s Brown Mountains

brown mountain lights new appearancesThe Brown Mountain Lights are legendary UFOs (unidentified flying objects) in the North Carolina mountains. They’ve appeared to thousands of people over the past 100 years, yet like most UFOs, the Brown Mountain Lights are anything but predictable. App State physicist Daniel Caton and his team almost gave up after attempting to film the lights over the past few years.

Recently, their dry spell ended and the lights finally appeared on his camera in vivid fashion.

Here is his video description, with the time stamps of the appearances, and his raw, unedited footage:

“Dusk-to-dawn 30-second images. Cloudy early, then clear with stars rising at angles. WEIRD LIGHTS FROM 0:52 – 1:02 IN. SEEM OUT OF FOCUS SO NEARBY. “

To get the above footage, Daniel Caton and his App State scientific team set up two cameras on a house overlooking the Brown Mountains and wirelessly streamed the footage to their lab back at Appalachian State University. For the past 4 years, they reviewed the footage every day from the previous night without seeing anything that couldn’t be easily explained (shooting stars, car lights, camera flares, etc).

brown mountain lightsIf something shows up on one camera but not the other, the team assumes they just saw a lens flare or some other electronic anomaly.

The footage above, for the first time, captured the same strange lights on both film cameras, at the same exact time.

After the discovery, Caton and his colleagues dissected the images and couldn’t come up with any logical explanation for the light to be there.

If you’ve never heard of the ‘Brown Mountain Lights’ before, this short (fairly dated) documentary presents a decent overview:

What do you think the Brown Mountain Lights might be?

Currently, Rafael is located just south of Jamaica, moving northwest toward the Cayman Islands and Cuba, with forecasts indicating it may reach hurricane status by tonight.

It is expected to make landfall in Cuba by Wednesday morning, then travel towards Florida or Louisiana by the weekend. There is still significant unpredictability with this storm, with some tracks even having it coming to the Carolinas early next week.

Timeline of Tropical Storm Rafael:

  • Tuesday Afternoon: Expected to reach the Cayman Islands.
  • Wednesday Morning: Predicted landfall in Cuba as a hurricane.
  • Wednesday Evening: Expected to impact the Florida Keys.
  • Saturday: Potential landfall somewhere along the gulf coast.

Rafael, the 17th named storm this season, reflects NOAA’s prediction of an above-average hurricane season with between 17 to 25 storms (considering there are still 25 days remaining in the Atlantic Hurricane season).

Charlotte Marks 5th Highest Increase in Lone Renters Nationwide

0

Whether by choice or by necessity, 1 million Americans have embraced “solo renting” in recent years, and Charlotte is no exception. In fact, the metro marked the 5th highest jump in renters living alone nationwide. However, this lifestyle comes at a premium for Charlotteans – the steepest in North Carolina.

In Rent Cafe’s newest study, they rank the trending metro areas for solo renters and the places where, financially speaking, it’s easier (or more challenging) to ditch your roommate.

Here’s a close look at the rise and cost of independent living in Charlotte:

  • The number of solo renters in Charlotte grew by 20% from 112,258 to 135,231 in five years, now comprising 16% of the metro’s total renter population. This means that many apartment dwellers in the metro are willing to dig deeper into their wallets just to have a place of their own.
  • To live alone as a renter in Charlotte you’d need to earn an extra $825 per month compared to a regular renter. That said, solo renters in Charlotte have an average annual income of $43,807, while the average renter makes $33,907 per year.
  • That’s the biggest income gap in the Tar Heel State, as lone renters in Raleigh or Fayetteville need an additional income of $695 and $574, respectively. Still, it’s still less than the premium you’d have to pay to go solo in New York ($1,153 per month) or Atlanta ($1,073 per month).
  • Nationwide, Salt Lake City saw the largest increase in solo renters (up 25%) between 2018 and 2023, followed by McAllen, TX (up 24%). Akron, OH, and Pittsburgh, PA, are the most budget-friendly metros for solo renting, with premiums at about $300. In contrast, renting alone is most challenging in California’s San Jose and Santa Maria, where solo renters need an extra income of more than $2,000 per month.

Microsoft Just Purchased 1,385 Acre Chunk of North Carolina For $26.85 Million

Microsoft just purchased a sprawling 1,385 acre megasite in North Carolina’s Person County for $26.85 million, according to the American City Business Journals.

This land, located in Woodsdale Township, has been earmarked for economic development purposes.

While Microsoft has not yet revealed specific plans for the site, the company has been heavily investing in infrastructure for cloud computing and artificial intelligence, with over $20 billion spent in its last fiscal quarter. This acquisition of a “megasite” suggests they might be expanding their nationwide data center footprint.

If Microsoft’s purchase is for a new data center, they would be joining the likes of Facebook, Apple, and GIGA in building sprawling data centers across the Carolinas.
