Charlotte’s FFM Gala Brings in National Leaders For Reentry Programs and Housing

0

Freedom Fighting Missionaries (FFM), a Charlotte-based reentry organization that has garnered national attention for its groundbreaking programs and funding, just held its 4th Annual Gala with almost 800 attendees, bringing together activists, policymakers, and community leaders in support of formerly incarcerated individuals.

The event, themed Celebrating Women in the Movement, featured civil rights icon Angela Davis as keynote speaker, alongside Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, Dr. Topeka Sam, lobbyist Kristie Williams, and Sheena Meade, CEO of The Clean Slate Initiative. Charlotte City Councilwoman Dr. Tiawana Brown, the first formerly incarcerated person to serve on the council, delivered the gala’s opening remarks.

“This gala was more than just a celebration—it was a powerful statement about progress and possibility,” said Dr. Kenneth “Kenny” Robinson, president and founder of Freedom Fighting Missionaries. “Having Angela Davis, a symbol of resilience and justice, stand with us as we continue breaking barriers was an unforgettable moment. The funds raised will go directly toward ensuring that those reentering society have not just resources but a real foundation for success, including stable housing. We are not just talking about change; we are building it—literally—with our upcoming affordable housing complex.”

The gala raised $72,000 through donations and sponsorships, with proceeds supporting FFM’s reentry services and its groundbreaking affordable housing project, set to break ground this summer. This initiative marks a historic milestone, as FFM becomes the first Black-founded reentry organization in Charlotte to purchase land and develop housing specifically for justice-involved individuals and their families.

During the event, FFM debuted a powerful video to supporters, originally produced by Cash App Communities, highlighting the journey of a justice-involved mother of eight working toward stability with FFM’s support. The video, first released during the holidays, has since garnered over 4 million views on YouTube, amplifying the organization’s impact on a national scale.

With momentum from the gala, Freedom Fighting Missionaries continues to break barriers, providing essential services such as ID assistance, employment support, and housing solutions to individuals navigating reentry. The organization’s upcoming housing complex will offer 24 units designed to serve families, ensuring access to stable housing as they rebuild their lives.

The Role of Skill vs. Luck in Popular Casino Games

0

The world of casino gaming combines luck and mastery, creating an exciting experience for players worldwide. That has led to a persistent debate of whether players should rely on fortune or their expertise for success. However, the correct answer depends on the casino games you choose, as some games rely on random results, while others require in-depth knowledge and thinking.

Here’s a look at the role of chance and skills in popular casino games to boost your chances of success regardless of your favorite game.

The role of chance in casino games

Luck is an essential element when playing most casino games. The results are purely based on chance when playing roulette, lotteries, or slots at the Betway casino. Such modern casinos use random number generators verified for fair play, ensuring that nobody can predict the results with certainty.

Lotteries perfectly illustrate the element of luck in gambling. Despite buying multiple tickets, lottery players still face near-impossible odds of winning. When betting on color or numbers on the roulette table, there’s no way of predicting where the ball will land on the wheel since every turn is independent of the last one.

While luck governs slots, roulette, and lotteries, it also plays a key role in skill-based games like poker and blackjack. Of course, good techniques will give you an advantage, but one bad card might instantly turn the tide.

The role of skill and strategy in casino games

While online casino games at Betway are provably fair and the results are random, some games favor players with calculated moves and experience. A blend of luck and personal decisions shapes the results in games like blackjack, poker, and sports betting. For instance, poker is widely known as a skill-based game because players need to consistently outperform other players over time.

The most successful poker players understand how to use psychology, probability, and betting patterns to boost their chances of success. Blackjack also involves making calculated choices when making decisions on taking more cards, raising stakes, or staying put. Studies also show that blackjack players can reduce the house edge to 0.5% from the typical 2-8% for casual players.

Sports betting is also a good example of the value of knowledge and strategy in online gambling. Sports bettors who examine team data, past matches, athlete health reports, and team news tend to make better picks. However, no amount of research can prevent surprise results in sports betting due to sudden player injuries or weather shifts, so it’s always important to consider the chance in each bet.

Can skill and strategy overcome luck in online casino gaming?

The mix of strategy and fortune exists in all casino gaming activities. Experienced players in games like blackjack and poker often succeed more than beginners despite being at the mercy of a random card distribution. As such, it’s the balance between luck and strategy that helps players succeed. However, research shows that expertise is rewarding to players in skill-based games over time, while games like slots remain at the mercy of luck.

The Hidden Costs of Importing Goods and How to Avoid Them

0

Importing goods can be a great way to expand your business, access unique products, or reduce manufacturing costs. With global trade more accessible than ever, businesses of all sizes are sourcing materials and finished products from overseas. However, many importers focus primarily on product costs and shipping fees, overlooking the hidden expenses that can significantly impact their bottom line.

Unexpected tariffs, regulatory compliance fees, storage charges, and customs clearance issues can quickly add up, leading to financial strain. For businesses importing into the United States, navigating these challenges can be complex, especially with strict customs regulations and evolving trade policies. Proper planning and expert guidance are essential to ensuring a smooth and cost-effective importing process.

One of the key factors in avoiding excessive import costs is understanding the customs clearance process. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) enforces strict regulations, requiring importers to comply with classification codes, valuation rules, and trade laws. Even a small error in documentation can result in costly delays or penalties. That’s why many businesses seek professional assistance to handle customs procedures efficiently and avoid unnecessary expenses.

The Role of a Customs Broker in Reducing Import Costs

When importing goods, dealing with customs can be one of the most complex and expensive aspects of the process. From determining accurate tariff classifications to ensuring compliance with government regulations, navigating customs requirements without proper knowledge can lead to unexpected costs. Now, this is where a professional service can be invaluable.

A customs broker specializes in handling the documentation, duties, and legal requirements necessary for importing goods into the U.S. They work with CBP to ensure that shipments are classified correctly, reducing the risk of delays, fines, or additional duties. By leveraging their expertise, businesses can avoid common pitfalls such as misclassification, underpayment of duties, or non-compliance with trade laws.

Additionally, customs brokers stay up-to-date with the latest trade regulations, helping businesses adapt to policy changes without costly disruptions. They also assist with duty drawback programs, which allow importers to recover duties paid on goods that are later exported. By working with a knowledgeable broker, businesses can optimize their import process, minimize unexpected costs, and streamline supply chain operations.

Common Hidden Costs of Importing Goods

Beyond customs clearance, several other hidden costs can impact the profitability of importing. Understanding these potential expenses can help businesses prepare in advance and avoid financial surprises.

Tariffs and Duties

Tariffs and duties vary depending on the type of goods, country of origin, and trade agreements in place. Many importers underestimate these costs, which can fluctuate based on government policies. Failure to classify products correctly can result in higher tariffs or penalties, making it essential to verify tariff codes before shipment.

Storage and Demurrage Fees

Delays in customs clearance, documentation issues, or shipment scheduling problems can lead to high storage fees at ports and warehouses. Many ports impose demurrage charges if cargo is not picked up within a specified timeframe, which can quickly accumulate if paperwork is not in order. Proper planning and coordination with logistics providers can help avoid these costs.

Exchange Rate Fluctuations

If you’re paying international suppliers in foreign currency, fluctuations in exchange rates can significantly affect your costs. A slight change in currency value can make imports more expensive than initially planned. Businesses should monitor exchange rates and consider hedging strategies to manage currency risks.

Compliance Penalties

Import regulations cover various aspects, including product safety, labeling, and environmental standards. If a shipment fails to meet U.S. compliance requirements, it may be subject to fines, additional testing fees, or even rejection at the port. Ensuring that imported goods comply with all relevant standards before shipment can prevent costly penalties.

Shipping and Freight Charges

Shipping costs extend beyond just freight rates. Additional charges such as fuel surcharges, peak season fees, and unexpected route changes can increase overall expenses. Working with reliable freight forwarders and negotiating rates can help businesses keep shipping costs under control.

Strategies to Minimize Import Costs

Although hidden costs can add up, proactive planning and strategic decision-making can help businesses reduce import expenses and improve profitability.

Work with a Reliable Customs Broker

A customs broker can help businesses navigate regulatory challenges, classify goods accurately, and ensure timely customs clearance. By preventing costly mistakes, they play a crucial role in reducing hidden import costs.

Utilize Free Trade Agreements (FTAs)

Many countries have trade agreements that offer lower tariff rates on specific goods. Businesses should explore FTAs that apply to their imports to take advantage of reduced duty rates and exemptions.

Negotiate with Suppliers and Freight Forwarders

Building strong relationships with suppliers and logistics providers can lead to better pricing and favorable payment terms. Negotiating bulk discounts, extended payment terms, or fixed shipping rates can help control costs.

Plan Shipments Efficiently

Delays and rushed shipments often result in higher fees. Planning shipments well in advance, consolidating cargo to reduce per-unit costs, and optimizing shipping routes can significantly lower expenses.

Stay Updated on Import Regulations

Regulatory changes can impact import costs, and businesses that stay informed are better prepared to adapt. Regularly reviewing trade policies, tariff updates, and compliance requirements can prevent unexpected financial setbacks.

Importing goods offers significant business opportunities, but failing to account for hidden costs can erode profits. From tariffs and storage fees to customs clearance expenses, unexpected charges can quickly add up. However, with careful planning, professional guidance, and a strategic approach to logistics, businesses can avoid unnecessary expenses and improve efficiency.

When importers are working with experts such as customs brokers, leveraging free trade agreements, and optimizing shipping processes, they minimize costs and maximize profitability. Staying informed about trade regulations and planning shipments strategically ensures a smoother and more cost-effective importing experience. With the right approach, businesses can successfully navigate the complexities of international trade while keeping their bottom line strong.

NC Officials Issue Major Alert After Radioactive Device Stolen

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) has issued a public warning after a device containing radioactive material was stolen in Kernersville, NC.

Officials are urging caution and asking anyone with information to contact law enforcement immediately.

The SPEC-150 Industrial Radiography exposure device, commonly known as an “IR camera,” was stolen from a pickup truck parked at the Sleep Inn motel on Heartland Drive. The theft was discovered the following morning.

The IR camera, weighing 53 pounds and bearing serial number 0320, contains radioactive material that poses a health risk if mishandled.

Authorities advise anyone who finds the device to stay at least 30 feet away and avoid any attempts to open or move it.

Individuals with information on the stolen camera should call 911 or local law enforcement immediately. Additionally, reports can be made to Travis Cartoski with the NCDHHS Radiation Protection Section at 919-621-4797.

South Carolina Declares State of Emergency as Growing Wildfires Ravage Thousands of Acres

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency Sunday as wildfires swept through the Carolinas and Georgia, burning thousands of acres and forcing evacuations.

Dry conditions and strong winds fueled the flames, with over 175 fires reported in South Carolina earlier in the day, according to the governor’s office.

By early Monday, the South Carolina Forestry Commission reported 163 active fires burning more than 5,400 acres. A large wildfire in the Carolina Forest area prompted evacuations in neighborhoods like Walkers Woods and Avalon. Residents were allowed to return home by Sunday afternoon, though officials cautioned that smoke would remain visible in the area for some time.

Damage assessments are expected to begin this afternoon. Fire crews and first responders continue efforts to contain the largest fires, including a 1,600-acre blaze in Horry County, which was 30% contained as of this morning.

The National Weather Service expects relief by Tuesday as a cold front moves in, bringing rain to the region and helping suppress fire activity. Meanwhile, the South Carolina Forestry Commission has deployed 40 resources, alongside multiple other agencies, to battle the ongoing fires. Drivers in affected areas are urged to remain cautious due to reduced visibility from lingering smoke.
