Alevo Spending Hundreds of Millions and Employing Over 2,500 in Concord

philip-morris-plant-concord-ncAlevo Inc. has starting spending “hundreds of millions” of dollars on its new facilities in Concord NC, which will employ over 2,500 workers. It will produce revolutionary new battery systems, used to store and release energy with significantly more efficiency than previous technologies.

The sheer size of the company’s new facility will significantly help the Charlotte region to establish itself as an energy hub for the nation. Storage for utility companies and smart-grid applications will also be a key to the development of renewable-energy sources such as wind and solar nationwide.

Alevo has created a patented battery technology that can capture unused electricity as it travels from Point A to Point B and store it to reduce waste. Their new technology will be combined with smart-grid applications and company services to create “huge” benefits for industry, consumers and the region. Their new battery systems are safer than conventional lead-acid designs, and they will last longer, and can be charged and discharged faster with less wear on the units.

The battery technology and related services could solve a major problem that’s always plagued solar and wind farms — how to keep a constant supply of energy when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.

Victory Industrial Park LLC bought the 2,023-acre Philip Morris site for $68.5 million in April. Norwegian entrepreneur Jostein Eikeland founded Victory, Alevo and others in the green tech sector. Alevo is currently planning to hire over 2,500 people within the next three years. This will be the same number who once worked at the former cigarette plant.

Alevo expects to begin spending millions on large scale installations and begin rolling out its commercial applications later this year.

Charlotte Area Woman Battling Cancer Just Won The Lottery – Her Reaction is Priceless (Video)

Gina Short, a Charlotte area woman, was given a second chance at life after being diagnosed with breast cancer – and now she just won the NC State’s Ultimate Millions second-chance lottery.

Her husband, Len, is by her side when she falls to the ground in excitement after seeing the $1 million winning check.

After winning the second chance lottery, Gina commented to the press; “I have a second chance. That’s what my whole life is about, second chances.”

She decided, along with her husband Len, to go with the lump sum payment option ($415,500 after federal and state taxes are taken out), instead of the $1 million annuity plan giving $50,000 a year for the next 20 years.

Gina still has to undergo several more cancer treatments before she’s totally healed, but her new winnings are now giving her second chance at life a much brighter outlook.

ETS Corporation Bringing 200 New Jobs To Concord

new jobs coming to concord ncMore great news for Cabarrus County was just announced by US drinkware manufacture, ETS Express, Incorporated. They’re now planning on create at least 200 manufacturing and warehousing jobs over the next year and a half.

They’ll be moving into a brand new 152,000 square foot building off of Derita Road, near the new Amazon building – both of which are being built as part of the Silverman Group’s $22 million speculative building project.

The Silverman Group is also working on another speculative building project, a 108,000 facility off Aviation Blvd., projected to cost around $7 million.

These speculative building projects are a key part in Cabarrus County’s plan to continue to attract new companies like ETS Express and continue to bring new jobs to our area.

Charlotte Dominates Denver in Super Bowl 50 Food Drive

charlotte super bowl food driveThe Carolinas ended up winning in a big way on Super Bowl Sunday. Even though they lost on the football field (no thanks to the refs), they won in a big way in the pantry – dominating a bet Denver made with Charlotte to see who could collect the most food for charity by the end of Super Bowl 50.

After the initial challenge was made for the #UnitedMethodistsKeepPounding food drive on January 24th, churches, ministries, and businesses began joining in droves. Donations ended up coming in from over 350 organizations throughout the Carolinas.

Final score: Carolina 636,891, Denver 360,664.

The bulk of the food will go directly to Loaves & Fishes food pantries.

It was an especially stinging loss for Denver, since they won a similar bet with Seattle back in the 2014 Super Bowl – Denver won that year by a margin of 103,000 cans to Seattle’s 53,000.

Major Winter Storm Could Bring 5 Inches Of Snow To Charlotte On Monday

snow coming to CharlotteA ‘Hazardous Weather Outlook’ has just been issued by the National Weather Service for a major winter storm that will be moving through the Charlotte region.

Forecasters are now predicting that as much as five inches of snow could fall on Monday in the Queen City.

A wintery mix of sleet and rain is also possible, depending on where exactly the system shifts to (plus or minus 15 or 20 miles could result in rain instead of snow).

Although snow isn’t guaranteed, the odds are in our favor for needing milk and bread, as forecasters have given the Charlotte region a 60 percent chance of snow on Monday during the day, and 70 percent on Monday night.

Federal Court Throws Out North Carolina’s Racially Discriminatory Districts – Now NC Is Fighting Back

North_Carolina_US_Congressional_District_12After NC Republicans took over the state legislature in 2010, they drew up new district maps to determine the boundaries of congressional and state legislative districts, carving them up to their partisan advantage.

This past Friday, a federal court declared that two of those congressional districts were gerrymandered in an extremely racially discriminatory manner, deliberately clustering many black voters into large, oddly shaped districts in violation of their constitutional rights.

“Elections should be decided through a contest of issues, not skillful mapmaking. Today, modern computer mapping allows for gerrymandering on steroids, as political mapmakers can easily identify individual registrations on a house-by-house basis, mapping their way to victory.” Judge Max Cogburn wrote in a recent CBS article.

North_Carolina_US_Congressional_District_1The two very weirdly shaped districts cover diverse areas where aside from race, voters have little in common.

“This ruling by all three judges is a vindication of our challenge to the General Assembly of North Carolina writing racially biased ‘apartheid’ voting districts to disenfranchise the power of the African-American vote,” Rev. William Barber, president of North Carolina’s NAACP chapter, told the Raleigh News & Observer.

In response to this past Friday’s federal ruling, NC leaders have just filed an emergency appeal to overturn the federal court order – arguing that the court’s decision comes too close to the March 15 primary.

UPDATE 7/17/2016: Uri Man, the CEO of Crystal Lagoons US returned to Charlotte last week for some further negotiations with at least 2 North Carolina based developers. If a deal is struck, they would still need to seek final approval from the Charlotte City Counsel.

The CEO of Crystal Lagoons just left Charlotte after securing a deal that he hopes will be finalized by the end of this year. The deal would be for the company to build a massive new ‘crystal lagoon’ and water-front development right here in the Queen City.

The company has now announced a total of 11 projects in the U.S., after it has already started 300 other projects around the world (including in Dubai).

The artificial bodies of water are built using proprietary ultrasonic and “disinfection pulse” technology (similar to the technology used in ultrasonic jewelry cleaners) to purify water with very limited chemical output and energy intake. The resulting water is extremely clear and blue, building an amazing platform for waterfront dining, housing, and recreation. The ‘crystal lagoons’ also come with white-sand beaches and docks for boats and jet skis.

The company is pitching the new lagoons as better alternatives to golf courses, claiming they are easier to maintain and more eco-friendly. They cost between $200,000 and $250,000 per acre to build and $2,000 to $2,500 per acre for monthly maintenance.

For the first time in known NFL history, a post-game press conference was held where the QB of the losing team was being interviewed right next to the the key defensive player of the opposing team. The reason Cam may have had his hood up on his now famous Panther sweatshirt may have been to try to block out the insults.

Here is what Cam was hearing right before he left the interview;

Denver corner Chris Harris, who has been vocal about Cam in the past, is talking bad about Cam’s performance right in Cam’s ear. Instead of hearing the interviewers, Cam was hearing Chris yell, “…throw the ball, can you throw the ball?”

It seems clear that Cam didn’t leave because of the media – he left because he wanted to be the bigger man as the opposition continued to insult his performance.
