Over 50 thousand pounds of russet potatoes have just spilled all over i77 near the West Boulevard exit after a big rig driver fell asleep at the wheel.
The driver of the truck was rushed to the hospital and his conditions are currently unknown.
Cleanup crews are currently on i77 trying to get the mess cleaned up, but it may take a couple hours to full clear the highway.

A few months after Google Fiber announced that it was launching in Charlotte, AT&T announced that it would launch their new ‘GigaPower’ in Gastonia. Google Fiber and AT&T’s GigaPower are now engaged in a nationwide race to see who can build the biggest fiber network that offers 1,000 megabits – or 1 gigabit – per second internet speed.
AT&T’s new Gastonia plan includes the construction of several stations around the Gaston County, with thousands of miles of cable running above and beneath the streets, connecting each home with internet speeds 100 times faster than we have now.
It will be the first company to offer speeds inside county lines of anything even close to one gigabit per second. This means that for anyone who wants to sign up, no more video buffering problems, slow upload and download speeds, or lag times on the internet.
AT&T is claiming that you will be able to download 25 songs in less than a second, a TV show in less three seconds or an entire high definition movie in little more than half a minute.

One Charlotte couple just got the best gift imaginable – a true miracle child. Elayah Faith Pegues was born nearly 14 weeks prematurely at Carolinas Medical Center. She was born after only about 24 weeks of development, weighing in at just 10 ounces and 10 inches long, she’s is now the smallest surviving baby to be born at CMC, as well as one of the smallest surviving babies in the world.
Megan Smith, and father, Eric Pegues celebrated Elayah’s original due date by holding a press conference at Levine Children’s Hospital.
After about 20 weeks of pregnancy, Megan’s ob/gyn detected that Elayah was not growing so he sent her to the hospital for further testing. She was on bed rest for nearly a month when doctors noticed Elayah suddenly stopped moving. They rushed her into the operating room to perform an emergency C-section – although there was little hope that the baby would survive.
Shortly after her birth, the medical team prepared Megan and Eric for the worst news any parent could hear…the inevitable death of their child. Despite the warnings, the parents held onto faith that their little girl would not die.
“We just weren’t taking it,” said Megan. “We just said, we have to have faith, and that’s when we made her middle name “Faith” because we weren’t going to give up on her.”
Dr. Andrew Herman, the chief medical officer at Levine Children’s Hospital, said that the child was able to grow in a healthy manner due to a “combination of talent, perseverance, and creativity”.
The baby’s care team at Levine created a special combination of formula and breast milk to keep Elayah healthy and growing since traditional methods simply wouldn’t work on such a small baby.
Dr. Herman noted that over the past several years there have been incredible advances in medical care to allow younger and younger babies to survive and properly mature outside the womb.

Many are now considering Tryon Place to be Uptown Charlotte’s most significant new development in decades. The project, which broker ground earlier this year, is a ‘mixed-use’ development. It will include retail, commercial, and residential spaces, as well as a massive amount of green space.
Crescent Communities is including over 30,000 sq. ft. of retail space, in addition to public plazas, courtyards, and greenspace throughout the new development. This will forever transform the southwest section of Uptown and form a solid link between the arts section (Bechler and Mint museums), and SouthEnd’s rapidly growing developments.
The $300+ million project will feature two massive new skyscrapers, including a 700,000 sq. ft. office tower and an undisclosed 300 room boutique hotel.
The final floor count for both towers is currently unknown, but planning documents estimate they could be as tall as 42 stories.

North Carolina Representatives Jeter, Hager, and Bradford recently sponsored a bill that would immediately halt work on the I-77 toll lane project.
According to the N.C. General Assembly’s website, House Bill 954 (HB954) has passed it’s first reading and now will go on to the NC House of Representatives and the NC Senate for a vote.
If both branches of our state government pass the bill, it could mean an immediate end to the i77 toll roads.
Anti-toll road activists are now calling for citizens of North Carolina to sign the following petition which will tell the members of the NC House and Senate to sign HB954 into law.

South Carolinian now has its first verified case of the the Zika virus.
The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control just announced that the infected SC resident just came back from a trip to a country where the Zika virus is active.
For the safety of the patient, the agency hasn’t yet been willing to release any information as to the person’s gender and where he or she lives, or even which country or region where the patient traveled to.
DHEC and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have already tested 105 people in South Carolina for the Zika virus, with one positive case, 99 negative and five pending. The individual who tested positive consulted with a health care provider earlier this month and the results of testing by DHEC and confirmation by the CDC were just received and confirmed.
Health authorities have announced that the virus is spreading “explosively” through the Americas. The World Health Organization has estimated the virus will infect 4 million people in the hemisphere by year’s end.
Local doctors and disease experts have said an outbreak of the Zika virus in South Carolina is possible, but not probable. They are encouraging everyone in South Carolina to get informed about the Zika virus and to due to the fact that it’s spread through mosquitoes, they highly recommend wearing extra-strength mosquito repellent or repellent bracelets anytime your outdoors for more than an hour.

Downtown Kannapolis is about to get one of it’s largest developments in decades.
The Kannapolis City Council just approved the final plans for a new mixed-use development that will include 200 apartments and 35,000 square feet of retail space.
The project will generate an estimated $208,000 in taxes every year for the city.
It will be located in the 200 block of West Avenue that includes the old Cabarrus Bank building and Kannapolis Rotary Hall.
Those buildings would not be demolished, but a vacant building that sits between Rotary Hall and the parking lot would be demolished as well as Transit Damaged Freight.
If all goes according to plan, construction could begin as early as spring 2017.

The City of Gastonia just received one of the biggest checks from a company in its history. They were paid $20 million upfront by CaroMont Heath for the right to use the County-owned CaroMont Regional Medical Center and the land it sits on in Gastonia for the next 40 years.
This week a new committee will meet for the first time to discuss how the massive influx of funds will be spent.
Most of the committee members have already been throwing around ideas about how to use it to make even more money for the city and county. Gaston County Commissioner Jason Williams wants to use the money to fund projects that promote economic development, education, and quality of life in our region.
The commission also includes Robert Browne, vice president of Beam Construction in Cherryville; Jenny Holder, branch manager of Fidelity Bank in Gastonia; Bernardo Porter, pastor of Peculiar Generation Ministries in Gastonia; and Greg Botner, president and CEO of Wilbert Plastic Services in Belmont.
Some of these committee members are leaning toward investing most of the money, rather than spending it on new initiatives. They argue that investing it and receiving interest can help decrease taxes in the long run for all residents. $15 million or more of the money into some type of investment that gets the county the best interest rate possible.
