The NFL fined Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans during Sunday’s game in Jacksonville (amounting to 0.0014% of his $20.6 billion net worth). The league condemned Tepper’s actions as “unacceptable” after the incident, which occurred as the Panthers, with a 2-14 record, lost 26-0 to the Jaguars.

“All NFL personnel are expected to conduct themselves at all times in ways that respect our fans and favorably reflect on their team and the NFL,” the NFL said in a statement.

Tepper also released a statement yesterday apologizing for the incident.

“I am deeply passionate about this team and regret my behavior on Sunday,” he said. “I should have let NFL stadium security handle any issues that arose. I respect the NFL’s code of conduct and accept the League’s discipline for my behavior.”

Here’s a video showing the incident at this past Sunday’s game:

This penalty echoes a past incident where the NFL fined Titans owner Bud Adams $250,000 in 2009 for an obscene gesture towards fans. The league has a history of banning fans for similar misconduct.

Tepper, who has owned the Panthers for under six years, has faced a tough year, including firing coach Frank Reich mid-season. He has overseen several coaching changes during his tenure.

What do you think about Tepper’s actions and the NFL’s fine?
