Gastonia Man w/ Long Rap Sheet Facing New Charges After Felony w/ Child
A Gaston County man with a lengthy rap sheet stretching back over a decade is now facing severe new felony charges regarding children.
Daniel Lee Bumgardner was booked into the Gaston County jail on August 31, 2026 with the following charges: 
* Indecent Liberties, Child
* DISSEMINATE OBSCENE MATERIAL TO MINOR UNDER 1

Another Earthquake Just Struck The North Carolina Rainforest

An earthquake just struck the North Carolina rainforest this morning just before sunrise at 5:29am, 8 km W of Rosman, NC.

This morning’s quake had a magnitude of 2.1 and a shallow 3.3 km depth, according to USGS.

This brings the total so far this year to 15 quakes in and around the area of the NC rainforest, with the largest being a magnitude 2.7 quake from back in March.

If you don’t yet know about the NC rainforest, here’s a great video explaining where it is and what is unique about it.

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Charlotte region over the past few years. Last year, we experienced the largest earthquake in over 100 years when a 5.1 magnitude quake hit Sparta, NC, and since then, dozens of aftershocks have continued to rattle our state.

According to USGS.gov, “Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”

The remarkable comments came on national television after Norman lost the GOP Senate runoff to Darline Graham.

When a reporter asked what he would tell an undecided South Carolina voter, Norman gave a two-word response.

NC’s Largest Military Base Selected To Host New Advanced Nukes for Trump Admin’s ‘Project Janus’

North Carolina’s largest military base has just been selected to host a new generation of advanced nukes under a historic US Army program called ‘Project Janus’.

The Army selected Antares Nuclear to develop a commercial nuclear microreactor at NC’s Fort Bragg. The project is part of the new Janus Program, which initially includes five major Army installations.

“We need more power. We need it delivered faster and cheaper, and we need it to be more reliable,” said Owen West, director, DIU in a press release. “With Janus, DIU is assisting the Army’s micro reactor build — speeding military energy production to protect the nation.”

The federal government plans to provide up to $2.2 billion between 2027 and 2031 for the broader program. Combined with private investment, the Army expects more than 20 nuclear microreactors across military installations nationwide.

The first reactor project is expected to enter useful service by September 2028. Private contractors will build, own and operate the reactors rather than the military.

Fort Bragg joins Fort Campbell in Kentucky, Fort Hood in Texas, Fort Benning in Georgia and Fort Drum in New York. Each installation will work with a different nuclear technology company.

The Army says microreactors could provide reliable power while strengthening energy security at critical military installations. Officials also hope the program will accelerate America’s advanced nuclear industry and manufacturing capacity.

However, companies won’t receive their federal funding upfront. Payments will depend on contractors successfully reaching specific technical milestones.

The Army also plans to work closely with utility companies surrounding participating installations. Eventually, those partnerships could lead to larger nuclear projects supplying electricity beyond individual bases.

For North Carolina, the selection places Fort Bragg at the forefront of America’s emerging advanced nuclear energy push.

Atrium Health Agrees to $1.8 Million Settlement – Patients Now Eligible For Payouts

Thousands of Atrium Health patients across the Charlotte region could be eligible for cash payments as part of a $1.8 million class-action settlement involving the health system’s online patient portal.

The settlement resolves allegations that Atrium Health used tracking pixel technology on its website and, for a limited period, shared certain personal and health-related information with third parties, including Meta and Google. Atrium denied wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement.

The settlement applies to patients who had a MyAtriumHealth or MyCarolinas account at any time between Jan. 1, 2015, and April 10, 2024.

Eligible patients fall into one of two groups:

Group 1: Patients who accessed their online portal between Jan. 1, 2015, and July 31, 2019, are eligible to receive a proportional share of the settlement fund after attorney fees and administrative costs are deducted.
Group 2: Patients who had an account during the settlement period but did not access it during those earlier years may receive up to $10. Payments may be reduced if approved claims exceed the group’s $300,000 allocation.

Patients must submit a claim to receive a payment.

Eligible patients can submit a claim online or by mail through the court-approved settlement website. Claims must be filed by September 28, 2026. Alternatively, you could have a claim advisors handle it for you here.

A tractor-trailer fire caused miles of traffic backups on Interstate 485 during Charlotte’s Monday evening rush hour.

The charred semi could be seen along I-485 Outer near Exit 4 at Steele Creek Road. The cleanup of the wreck is now creating significate congestion as drivers headed through southwest Charlotte during the worst driving window of the day. Traffic is backed up roughly five exits to Wilkinson Boulevard at Exit 9, according to Queen City News.

Authorities said no one was transported from the scene following the fire, which first began just before noon today.

Drivers traveling along I-485 Outer should expect lingering delays as crews handle the scene and traffic clears.

UNC Charlotte Breaks Enrollment Record for 3rd Consecutive Year

Students walking on campusThe University of North Carolina at Charlotte has enrolled 33,045 students for the fall 2026 semester, surpassing the University’s previous record of 32,207 in 2025. This marks the third consecutive year of record-breaking enrollment at the University.

Charlotte’s enrollment was boosted by a record first-year class of 5,165 and record transfer class of 3,154. This year’s enrollment includes 27,464 undergraduate students and 5,581 graduate students. The University’s student population spans a broad geographic area, including 99 North Carolina counties, 46 states and 109 other countries.

“Record enrollment is a strong vote of confidence in the value of a UNC Charlotte education,” said Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber. “More students are choosing Charlotte because they see the opportunities that come with attending a major research university in one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities. As we continue to grow, our focus remains on ensuring every student has the support, experiences and connections they need to succeed here and well beyond graduation.”

The University continues to attract high-achieving students. The incoming first-year class arrives with an average weighted GPA of 3.96. Charlotte’s transfer student enrollment for the fall 2026 semester is 3,154 – a 5.6% increase over the fall 2025 semester.

Online learning options have boosted transfer enrollment, providing access and opportunity for working adults, allowing students to quickly address workforce needs in the region. Reflecting growing demand from learners balancing work, family and other responsibilities, enrollment among undergraduates aged 25 and older increased 9%, with fully online programs driving the growth. Charlotte Online enrollment rose 21%, from 2,900 to 3,514 students. Enrollment in Charlotte’s online bachelor’s programs —  ranked No. 1 in North Carolina and No. 4 nationally — grew 66%, from 950 to 1,579 students. This includes 103 students in the new B.A. in Computer Science with a concentration in AI-Assisted Software Engineering.

The record enrollment comes during a period of significant momentum for UNC Charlotte. In the past two years, the University achieved R1 status, recognizing its high level of research activity. In June, Charlotte received the largest research award in University history — up to $160 million from the National Science Foundation. These milestones reflect the University’s growing reputation for academic excellence, research innovation and student opportunity.

Charlotte apartments now average 925 square feet — that average has dropped by 40 square feet over the past decade, according to the latest RentCafe.com Apartment Size Report.

Here’s how each unit type changed in Charlotte‘s new apartments:

  • One-bedrooms now make up 54% of new supply, up from 46% a decade ago — and those units have also gotten smaller, shrinking by 33 square feet to an average of 740 square feet.
  • Studios lost the most space of any unit type, shrinking 70 square feet to average just 495 square feet. 
  • Two-bedroom apartments bucked the trend, gaining 13 square feet to average 1,135 square feet — and the number of two-bedrooms built nearly tripled compared to the previous decade.
  • Three-bedroom apartments gained the most — up 93 square feet to an average of 1,438 square feet — but renters looking for that kind of space will have a harder time finding it, as they make up just 6% of new supply, down from 8% a decade ago.

What the data shows overall: new apartments skew toward one-bedrooms, and those one-bedrooms are smaller than they used to be. More supply, but fewer of the larger layouts that families and roommates are often looking for.

One of the world’s most influential financial gatherings is taking place in North Carolina this week.

Economic leaders from the “Group of Twenty” (G20), representing the 20 most powerful countries in the world, have chosen Asheville, NC – one of the most resilient cities in the world, to meet in to hash out some of the world’s most difficult financial decisions.

Discussions are expected to focus on major economic issues, including interest rates, national debt and economic growth. Meanwhile, local officials estimate the gathering could generate roughly $2 million for the Asheville-area economy.

Organizers partly selected Asheville to highlight western North Carolina’s continuing recovery from Hurricane Helene. However, that message is drawing pushback from some local residents.

Protesters argue many devastated communities remain far from recovered. They say federal assistance and reconstruction have moved too slowly throughout some of the hardest-hit areas.

The contrast creates an unusual backdrop for the meetings. Global financial leaders are discussing government finances and economic growth inside one of Asheville’s most famous resorts. Meanwhile, residents outside are demanding greater attention to communities still rebuilding.

For Asheville, the gathering puts western North Carolina at the center of major global economic discussions. It also brings renewed attention to a region still dealing with Helene’s long-term aftermath.
