Charlotte Douglas Just Ranked The 5th Busiest Airport in The World

The Charlotte Douglas International Airport has just been ranked the 5th busiest in the world in a new report published by the Airports Council International (ACI).

According to the report, our airport processed a total of 519,895 arrivals and departures in 2021 and transported a total of 43 million passengers.

Charlotte ranked just ahead of LAX and Las Vegas, and just behind Denver.

1 in 5 North Carolina Drinkers Have Never Had a Prolonged Break From Alcohol

In times gone by, there used to be a misplaced assumption that moderate drinking could be healthier than being teetotal. It wasn’t long, however, before the studies making these assertions were exposed as flawed; it is indeed fact that any level of alcohol consumption is bad for your health. Of course, maintaining good health has never been the reason why drinkers drink, so such research that identified alcohol’s harmful effects was unlikely to deter consumers from continuing their habit.

Most people who start drinking at the legal age of 21 continue to do so for a lifetime, and for many, that is in a literal sense. A survey of 3,255 respondents over 21 by American Addiction Centers revealed that almost 1 in 5 drinkers (17%) in North Carolina admit they’ve never taken a prolonged break from drinking since they first started consuming alcohol – be it part of a sobriety trend, like Dry January, Sober October or #SoberCurious, or simply due to their own personal reasons. This compares to a national average of 19%.

Excessive drinking can have a negative impact on a person’s health (not to mention finances), so taking a break can have an overall positive effect. Studies show that regular drinkers who abstain from alcohol for a period of time have more energy, better sleeping habits and improved brain function. After a long-term period of abstinence, it also reduces the risks of developing cancer and heart disease.

Broken down by state, this figure was highest in Minnesota, where 32% of drinkers said they had never taken an alcohol break. Comparatively, it was lowest in Delaware, where it appears a significant number of people had, in fact, taken a break from alcohol since they starting drinking – just 7% said they hadn’t.

For those who are habitual drinkers and might have a couple beers after work, wine at dinner or a nightcap before bed, it might be difficult to ditch the habit. When asked which kind of alcohol they’d give up for a month, the majority of respondents (42%) said they would give up beer – a choice that could be influenced by the calorie count. Nearly 1 in 5 (16%) drinkers said they would give up alcopops (sweet drinks with low alcohol content that taste of soda, juice or an energy drink), which makes sense given their high sugar content. Fifteen percent of respondents said they’d give up spirits, 13% would abstain from wine, and another 13% would quit cocktails for a month-long period.

Of those who said they had taken prolonged breaks from drinking alcohol, 58% said they stopped out of concern for their health and how alcohol could effect them. Alcohol has a negative impact on various parts of the body, including organs like the brain, heart, liver, and pancreas. It interferes with the communication pathways in the brain, which can alter mood and behavior, potentially making it more difficult to think clearly and rationally. Drinking can also damage the heart and cause issues like cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, stroke and high blood pressure. In the liver, alcohol consumption can lead to fibrosis, steatosis, alcoholic hepatitis or cirrhosis. The pancreas is also effected and drinking can eventually lead to pancreatitis. Additionally, alcohol is known to significantly increase the risk of various of cancers, including: 

  • Cancer of the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx.
  • Esophageal cancer.
  • Liver cancer.
  • Breast cancer.
  • Colorectal cancer.

Respondents were asked if they were to quit drinking for a specific, protracted period of time, they would perceive the biggest benefit to be better brain function (30%). Another 30% said the best benefit would be fewer calories and 14% said a healthier GI system. Eleven percent said the biggest benefit would be better sleep, and 9% said it would be a better metabolism. Lastly, 7% said they thought the biggest benefit of quitting alcohol for a month would be a stronger immune system.

However, when asked if they were more likely to diet or quit alcohol for a one-month period, more than one-half (51%) said they would much rather diet than give up drinking for this time.

Finally, the average drinker admits that they can only drink for two days in a row before starting to feel a general sense of being unwell. Aside from the horrible hangover associated with drinking two days in a row, over time, drinking excessively can weaken your immune system, which makes your body an easier target for disease. Drinking excessively on a single occasion also reduces your body’s ability to ward off infections all the way up to 24 hours after having consumed alcohol.

Charlotte City Council Approves $12.4 Million for Affordable Housing Spending

​Charlotte’s City Council just voted to approved a massive $12.4 million spending plan to help build several new low-income housing developments around our city.

The city said the new funding will provide funds for potentially 602 new homes for low-income families.

According to a press release, “The city received 12 proposals from developers. With limited trust fund support available, the council on Monday approved financing seven of the proposed developments.”

Here are where all the communities currently slated to receive the funds are located:

Forest Park Apartments, 7150 Forest Point Blvd.: $2.5 million from the trust fund would support a multifamily development by the NRP Group that includes 200 units with rents between $420 and $1,075. The units would remain affordable for 30 years.

  • 40 units would be rented to families earning at or below 30% AMI.

  • ​140 units would be rented to families earning between 51% AMI and 60% AMI, or between $42,942 and $50,520 annually for a family of four.

  • 20 units would be rented to families earning between 61% AMI and 80% AMI, or between $51,362 and $67,350 annually for a family of four.

Northlake Center Apartments, 10400 Northlake Centre Parkway: $500,000 would support a multifamily development by WODA Cooper Companies that includes 78 units with rents between $339 and $1,465. The units would remain affordable for 30 years.

  • 20 units would be rented to families earning at or below 30% AMI.

  • 12 units would be rented to families earning between 31% AMI and 50% AMI, or between $26,102 and $42,100 annually for a family of four.

  • 12 units would be rented to families earning between 51% AMI and 60% AMI.

  • 34 units would be rented to families earning between 61% AMI and 80% AMI.

Evoke Living at Eastland, 5601 Central Ave.: $2.5 million would support a development for older adults by Crosland Southeast Communities and Opportunities South that includes 78 units with rents between $403 and $1,238. The units would remain affordable for 30 years.

  • 20 units would be rented to families earning at or below 30% AMI.

  • 31 units would be rented to families earning between 31% AMI and 50% AMI.

  • 27 units would be rented to families earning between 61% AMI and 80% AMI.

Mallard Creek Seniors, 7123 Mallard Creek Road: $2.95 million would support a development for older adults by DreamKey Partners that includes 102 units with rents between $404 and $1,458. The units would remain affordable for 30 years.

  • 26 units would be rented to families earning at or below 30% AMI.

  • 15 units would be rented to families earning between 31% AMI and 50% AMI.

  • 30 units would be rented to families earning between 51% AMI and 60% AMI.

  • 31 units would be rented to families earning between 61% AMI and 80% AMI.

Marvin Road Apartments, 3712 Marvin Road: $2.24 million would support a multifamily development by DreamKey Partners that includes 70 units with rents between $404 and $1,542. The units would remain affordable for 30 years.

  • 18 units would be rented to families earning at or below 30% AMI.

  • 11 units would be rented to families earning between 31% AMI and 50% AMI.

  • 17 units would be rented to families earning between 51% AMI and 60% AMI.

  • 24 units would be rented to families earning between 61% AMI and 80% AMI.

Parkside at Long Creek, 8400 Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road: $1.49 million would support a development for older adults by SCG Development Partners that includes 57 units with rents between $400 and $1,229. The units would remain affordable for 30 years.

  • 15 units would be rented to families earning at or below 30% AMI.

  • 15 units would be rented to families earning between 31% AMI and 50% AMI.

  • 11 units would be rented to families earning between 51% AMI and 60% AMI.

  • 16 units would be rented to families earning between 61% AMI and 80% AMI.

East Lane Drive Townhomes: $230,000 would support Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region as it builds 17 townhomes on East Lane Drive. The homes would be sold at $240,000 and remain affordable for 15 years.

Duke Energy Brings Online the Largest Solar Plant in North Carolina’s Surry County

Duke Energy continues to expand solar power in North Carolina with its 22.6-megawatt (MW) Stony Knoll Solar power plant in Surry County now in operation.

The project is owned and operated by Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions (DESS). The project was selected as part of the competitive bidding process established by 2017’s solar legislation in North Carolina.

The solar plant contains 76,600 panels with single-axis tracking. The plant is located on 195 acres in Dobson, N.C. – near Rockford Road. The facility will power the equivalent of 5,000 homes.

“In addition to our many renewable energy projects across the nation, North Carolina continues to be fertile ground for solar power,” said Chris Fallon, president of Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions. “With the help of our partners in Surry County, we have brought online the largest solar power plant in the county.”

The facility’s design and construction of the project were performed by SOLV Energy. The solar power generated by the project will be delivered through a 20-year power purchase agreement.

North Carolina is fourth in the nation for overall solar energy. The outlook is promising for more solar energy in the future as Duke Energy develops a proposed Carolinas Carbon Plan, which will be submitted to regulators in May.

“Solar power continues to play a vital part of our clean energy transition,” said Stephen De May, Duke Energy’s North Carolina president. “We expect renewables to grow significantly in the years ahead as we focus on meeting our customers’ needs for increasingly clean energy.”

Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County has just received its first Full Home Partnership for the up-and-coming Dixon Village site.

On April 6, Piedmont Lithium (currently battling with Gaston residents over their proposed $840 million open-pit lithium mine) officially committed $150,000 to the new Belmont, NC community. This partnership will not only fund a home in its entirety, but also provides volunteer hours toward the home’s completion. 

Said Kay Peninger, Habitat Gaston executive director, “We are grateful to Piedmont Lithium for their  leadership gift to help Habitat families purchase a home they can afford on their wages. Housing is not  just about shelter. It’s about homeownership and it represents a gateway and an opportunity to building a better future.” 

Dixon Village is a 7.5-acre development that will contain 28 houses in North Belmont. Approximately  one-third of the homes will be constructed for Habitat homeowners. The remaining houses will be for  market-rate homebuyers. This mixed-income neighborhood will be the first of its kind in Gaston County  and the greater Charlotte area. The innovative concept is designed to encourage interaction in a  diverse, closely-knit community, cultivating economic and social benefits as demonstrated across  research of similar developments. 

New research shows that communities like Dixon Village make a positive contribution to the area in  several ways, including a significant impact on success later in life for low-income children who grow up  in a mixed income neighborhood. Added Peninger about Dixon Village and Piedmont Lithium’s contribution, “With the strength, stability and self-reliance that owning an affordable home brings, Habitat families can focus on their lives, their health, their children, their dreams and their path to a brighter future.”

Cam Newton Launching New 7-on-7 Football League

This coming June, MVP Quarterback Cam Newton will join forces with Overtime to launch a new 7-on-7 American football league.

“OT7”, as the new league will be called, will be a 7-on-7 high-school-age football league for high-school-age players that aimed at taking what has typically been seen as a skill-development offshoot of the sport and turn it into its own national media property.

In an interview with CNBC, Cam Newton said, “there has been this untapped market in seven-on-seven for years. We’ve seen kids receive scholarship offers because of their seven-in-seven film.” He added that OT7 would provide “kids the exposure from the visual content that they need. Whether you have five stars or no stars, we want to give you that platform that highlights your skill set.”

The new OT7 league will include 24 teams playing 8 games each season and a playoff round to determine the league champion. The games will be played on 40-yard line segments of a standard 100-yard NFL field.

The games will run for 20 minutes each with no pads, and tackling is restricted. OT7 will allow one-hand touch for stoppage of play.

OT7 estimates that 500 to 700 athletes will take part in the first season.
