CSA Plans To Fly Over 100 ‘Mega-Sized’ Confederate Flags Through North Carolina

The Confederate Sons of America (CSA) have just announced an initiative they’re calling “Flags Across the Carolinas“, which will attempt to rally supports to fly at least 100 ‘mega-sized’ battle flags across North Carolina.

Their ultimate goal is to see at least one flying high in every county of the state.

The CSA defines a “mega-sized battle flag” as measuring at least 20 feet tall by 30 feet wide.

The first flag raised as part of the campaign is now flying high on a private piece of land near exit 94 on Interstate 40 in Burke County.

Aldi Recalling 38,000 Bags of Mixed-Vegetables After Rat Parts Discovered

Over 38,000 bags of Four Seasons-brand Mixed-Vegetables, sold exclusively at Aldi stores, have now been recalled after three complaints of pieces of small rodents were discovered in the bags.

The Aldi Supermarket chain has just reported that they’ve received one complaint from a customer and two from an Environmental Health agency over the same batch of mixed vegetables.

In a statement, Aldi noted that they have officially recalled 38,000 bags of the products, which were originally supplied by Agrifreeze in Belgium, and they’ve stopped any further shipments of the product from Agrifreeze to prevent any further issues.

Any customer who has purchased one of the mixed-vegetable bags should discard it or return it to a store for a full refund as soon as possible.

New Publix Opening in Largest Development Lake Norman Has Seen in Decades

The Village at Sherrills Ford has just announced the grand opening of their new Publix later this month as part of one of the largest developments Lake Norman has seen in decades. Developers are also almost finished on the new 24,000 square foot Catawba Valley Medical building.

According to their website, “The Village at Sherrills Ford is a mixed-use project consisted of 206 acres on the shoreline of Lake Norman. The site has over 5,000 feet of frontage on Hwy 150 West and the red light intersection of Slanting Bridge Road.”

‘The Village’ will consist of tens of thousands of square feet of commercial space and at least 775 single family and apartment homes. The entire project will soon become the largest residential/commercial development in Catawba County since 2006.

Prestige Corporate Development, LLC spokesman Shawn Mahoney said that they are in the midst of construction mode. “Right now trying to landscape, get signage up and watch as Road widening of Hwy 150 with turn lanes and a new red light being installed at the new Village Center Drive is completed. We also want buyers to know parcels are still available for purchase but supply will not last long at the current rate of interest. CMPD Asking For Charlotte’s Help In Finding Missing 14-Year-Old

The CMPD just sent out a press release asking for the public’s help in finding a missing teenager who was last seen in the Cotswold area.

14-year-old Ashley Bell was last seen leaving her home at 2200 N Sharon Amity Rd. wearing a green hoodie, jeans, and black Vans shoes. Ashley is described as a 5’9″, 125 lb white female with brown hair.

According to police, Ashley left her house on Sharon Amity Rd. traveling to an unknown location on January 28th.

Duke Energy Wants To Pass $276 Million Annual Tax Savings Onto NC Customers

Duke Energy has just announced plans to pass along the money that save from the recent tax bill to its North Carolina customers.

The tax bill decreases the overall corporate tax rate from 35% down to 21%. Duke Energy now estimates that they’ll save $276 million per year thanks to the new tax law.

This past week, Duke sent out a press release saying that “customers will receive the benefits of tax reform,” although they didn’t specify exactly how much of the $276 million savings they’ll be passing on. They noted that they plan on incorporating the new savings into its pending rate hike requests.

The announcement comes on the heels of a proposed 16.7% rate hike that would help pay for coal ash cleanup and transition to cleaner energy.

On Thursday, Attorney General Josh Stein applauded Duke’s announcement of passing along the savings;

“The federal government recently slashed corporate income tax rates – a change that will lead to significant cost savings for utilities like Duke Energy, as well as natural gas and water utilities in our state.

The rates we pay utilities have been set assuming higher taxes. It would be wrong for us to pay the utilities for an expense they are not incurring. So, today, I urged the Utilities Commission to order utilities to pass those savings on to the people of North Carolina.

I commend Duke Energy for agreeing with this request and hope to see other utilities do the same.”

In their announcement, Duke said that because the North Carolina Utilities Commission needs to approve any customer rate changes, it is premature to know how much North Carolina customers can expect to save.

Analysts at the site compared 27 economic performance indicators from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, ranging from overall GDP growth to startup activity.

North Carolina scored 57.34 out of 100 to come in 15th place overall – we ranked 11th in economic health, 12th in innovation, and 24th spot in overall economic activity.

Washington, California and Utah were the top 3 states, and West Virginia, Louisiana, and Mississippi were the bottom 3, all with similarly depressing scores. South Carolina landed right in the middle at #24.

The Carolina Panthers’ legendary linebacker Luke Kuechly has just received the 2017 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award at the NFL Honors show this weekend.

According to the NFL, “The award is presented each year to an NFL player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.”

Each NFL team nominated 1 player, then fellow players voted on their favorite in December’s Pro Bowl ballot.

Amtrak Train Derails in South Carolina Resulting In 2 Deaths and Over 70 Injuries

Early this morning a passenger train that was traveling from New York to Miami derailed in the heart of South Carolina, killing 2 people and injuring over 70.

According to a press release from Amtrak, “the lead engine derailed, as well as some passenger cars.” There were roughly 139 passengers and eight crew members aboard the train.

They stated that the lead engine car “came in contact” with a CSX freight train at about 2:35am Sunday morning in Cayce, SC, just outside Columbia;

The two trains collided near the 321 underpass where two tracks merged together;

The Lexington Sheriff’s Department confirmed the two deaths just before 6am this morning;

This morning’s incident happened less than a week after another Amtrak train derailed with numerous members of congress on board in Charlottesville, VA – killing 1 and injuring dozens.

Head of The NFL Wants The Panthers To Stay in The Carolinas

With the Panthers up for sale and the ultimate intentions of the new buyer in question, many Carolina Panthers fans are worried about the possibility of the team moving to a different city, especially if a better stadium deal is offered.

This past week, however, the commissioner of the NFL indicated that he would make it difficult for any new Panthers owner to move the team.

“I think all of us and the owners believe Carolina is a great market,” Commissioner Roger Goodell noted during an interview. “It’s a market we would like to stay in and we hope that the franchise owner that is eventually selected will have that view. As you know, that is subject to review by the ownership … and I’m sure that will be a question that many owners will ask, and I think that will clearly be the intent of our ownership.”

The fact that the head of the NFL wants the Panthers to stay in the Carolinas would mean that any owner wanting to move the team would face an uphill regulatory battle for any move from the NFL.

One of the biggest factors surrounding a potential move is the stadium – Bank of America Stadium is below current NFL stadium standards and a new owner will likely try to secure millions of dollars in Charlotte tax money to upgrade or build an entirely new stadium. If the city denies the requests or offers a low amount, the new owner could start asking other cities how much money they’d be willing to offer to help build a new stadium in their city.
