Charlotte City Council Narrowly Votes To Move Forward With Hosting 2020 RNC

Yesterday afternoon, the Charlotte City Council officially voted to accept contracts to host the Republican National Convention in 2020.

Members were strongly divided on the convention, narrowly voting in favor 6 to 5. Public comments during the meeting were equally divisive, with just 53 out of the 96 speakers in favor of RNC.

The Charlotte City Council released a full summary of RNC contract just before Monday’s special meeting. It read that if the city’s costs exceed $50 million, the RNC committee will need to pay for the remainder.

The City of Charlotte officially submitted their bid to host the 2020 Republican National Convention back in April.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the support and assistance of our many City of Charlotte partners, hotels, venues and others who helped to craft this thorough response on behalf of our region,” commented CRVA CEO Tom Murray.

The convention would be a huge economic boost for our city, considering that the Democratic National Convention that we hosted in 2012 had an estimated economic impact of over $163 million.

A new study by SmartAsset has just ranked all counties across the country according to their adjusted purchasing power.

Here in North Carolina, a dollar in Union County goes the furthest, and Mecklenburg County was ranked as the 5th best county in our state for purchasing power.

To determine the rankings, the report calculated the baseline cost of living in each area and the expenditures typical to someone making the county’s median income, subtracted all local income taxes, then, using a weighted average based on how close each county’s median income was to the minimum livable income in that area, they calculated the weighted cost of living as a percentage of median income.

One of SC’s First Legal Hemp Farms In Nearly 90 Years Will Start Giving Tours

Almost 1 year ago today, the state of South Carolina passed a new law which legalized commercial hemp farming for the first time since the 1930s.

The law allowed for just 20 farms to grow industrial hemp in the first year, and one of those farms is now seeing the first full crop of legal hemp plants in South Carolina in nearly 100 years. Palmetto Harmony, located just North West of Myrtle Beach, is growing over 3,200 young hemp plants.

Just before harvest time this coming fall, they will start giving tours.

For the 2019 hemp season, the SC Department of Agriculture (SCDA) will be doubling their licenses, allowing for up to 40 to receive permits to grow hemp as part of their 2019 Industrial Hemp Pilot Program.

“Expanding the Industrial Hemp Pilot Program will give us a greater opportunity to assess where and how this crop grows best in South Carolina,” commented Hugh Weathers, SC commissioner of agriculture in a press release. “Ultimately, industrial hemp is about crop diversity and new business for our rural farmers.”

The program requires that anyone looking to grow hemp;

  • Be a South Carolina resident
  • Pass a state and federal background check administered by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division
  • Have a signed contract with an industrial hemp manufacturer/processor
  • Submit GPS coordinates for the land where industrial hemp will be grown

Silver Alert Issued For Endangered Woman in Gastonia

A Silver Alert has just been issued for a missing and endangered Gastonia woman.

According to the alert, Debbie “Elaine” Dyson was last seen at 54 Burmil Road Gastonia, NC 28054 heading toward Spencer Mountain Rd. Dyson is believed to be suffering from dementia or another cognitive impairment and is currently considered endangered.

She is described as being a 57 white female with red hair and green eyes, standing 5’2″ and weighing approximately 140 pounds.

Airplane Makes Emergency Landing on East Charlotte Road

Yesterday afternoon a small plane veered off-course and end up landing on a public street. Emergency crews were immediately dispatched and traffic was backed up for miles in either direction.

The small airplane landed on Parkton Rd., about a quarter mile west of the Wilgrove Airport, where the plane was approved to land;

According to the Charlotte Fire Department, there were 2 people on board and no one was injured;

The cause of the emergency roadway landing is still under investigation.

NCDOT Installs New Misspelled Sign in Union County That Reads “Hemdy Bribge”

The NC Department of Transportation just installed a new sign Union County with a major type.

The new sign was for Hemby Bridge in Indian Trail, but the “d” was replaced with a “b”, making the sign read “Hemdy Bribge”.

NCDOT has now stated that the sign has been taken down and a correctly spelled replacement sign will said they are aware of the problem and are working to fix it.

They expect the sign to be corrected within a couple of weeks.

Huntersville BMW Spontaneously Combusts in Driveway

Yesterday morning at around 10:30am, a Huntersville resident’s BMW suddenly burst into flames. The picture to the right was uploaded to Facebook by Kate Dillon, a neighbor to the BMW owner.

According to neighbors, the car was in park with the engine turned off in the driveway of a home in Cabarrus Crossing in Huntersville;

While some neighbors thought that foul play may have been involved, possibly arson, the BMW most likely burst into flames due to faulty components that are now under recall, including a faulty Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve Heater and Blower-Regulator Wiring Harness.

ABC News recently launched an investigation and found that more than 40 fires occurring in parked cars across the country in the last five years involving vehicles that did not have open recalls for fire-related issues.

One of the fires happened in New York’s Westchester County after a 2003 BMW had been sitting parked for several days.

“The owner told us that the car had been parked for at least four, three or four days,” Mamaroneck Fire Chief Tracey Schmaling told WABC investigative reporter Jim Hoffer. “Which we thought was a little peculiar.”
