Panthers WR Devin Funchess Partners With PETA In New Ad Campaign

0

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Devin Funchess has just decided to partner with PETA to tell people not to chain their dogs outside, telling dog owners instead to treat them like members of the family.

In a new online ad, Funchess states, “To people out there [who] chain their dogs and leave them out there in the sun and extreme weather conditions, compassion is what [you] need. You should just bring ’em inside and love on ’em, play with them. Neglecting and chaining … your dog doesn’t make you tough.”

In addition to the video ad, PETA will also put up a billboard in Charlotte near the Panthers’ headquarters and a radio PSA in which Funchess tells fans to report any chained dogs they see to authorities.

Funchess is part of a growing list of athletes and other celebrities—including Jarvis Landry, Ryan Tannehill, Chris Culliver, Tyrann Mathieu, Tony Gonzalez, Stevie Johnson, Brandon Flowers, Terrell Suggs, Lance Briggs, and many others—who’ve partnered with PETA.

What are your thoughts about the new ad?

Do you think it’s wrong to chain a dog outside?

Governor Cooper proclaims October Cybersecurity Awareness Month

0

Governor Cooper has proclaimed October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month in North Carolina. The initiative is part of a monthlong campaign by the Department of Information Technology to educate people about cybersecurity threats and ways they can guard against them.

“Data thieves continue to find new ways to try to get to private information from your homes, our business and our governments,” said Eric Boyette, State Chief Information Officer and Secretary of the Department of Information Technology. “Well-meaning people sometimes make this easier by not being careful. This month, we want to try to remind people of some easy ways they can stop data theft.”

The North Carolina Department of Information Technology will sponsor events throughout the month to discuss cybersecurity measures, including; internet security software, smart-home security measures,  and self-destructing data drives.

On Oct. 18-19, DIT and its Enterprise Security and Risk Management Office (ESRMO) will host a cybersecurity symposium at the NC Rural Economic Development Center in Raleigh. The symposium is open to all state and local government employees.

The National Governors Association (NGA) will be in Raleigh on Oct. 23-24 to lead a Cyber Policy Academy. North Carolina is one of just four states selected to participate in the NGA effort. Experts from throughout the country will spend a full day discussing the development of a “disruption response plan” for North Carolina in the event of a cyberattack. They will also discuss updating the state’s cybersecurity and data privacy laws.

“North Carolina is fortunate to have been selected by NGA for this academy,” said Maria Thompson, Chief Risk Officer for the state of North Carolina. “These discussions and plans will help us improve an already strong system for protecting and responding to threats. We hope that our message will carry on long past this month.”

National Cyber Security Awareness Month was founded in 2004 by the National Cyber Security Alliance and the United States Department of Homeland Security. Today, the initiative is worldwide. 8 NC Schools Earn National Blue Ribbon Honors

0

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos today recognized eight North Carolina schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2018. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

“I’m pleased to celebrate with you as your school is named a National Blue Ribbon School,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos in a video message to the honorees. “We recognize and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives. Congratulations on your students’ accomplishments and for your extraordinary commitment to meeting their unique needs.”

The coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content.

State Superintendent Mark Johnson congratulated North Carolina’s recipients as leaders for schools across the state in demonstrating effective teaching and learning aimed at helping all students achieve the American dream.

“The teachers, other educators and parents in these schools should be proud of this recognition,” Johnson said. “It’s affirmation of all of their efforts to make the classroom experience as meaningful and productive as possible. Well done.”

Now in its 36th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed recognition on more than 8,800 schools, including 349 schools honored this year. On November 7 and 8, the Secretary and the Department of Education will celebrate with all honorees at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

All schools are honored in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates:

Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the past five years.

All eight of North Carolina’s schools recognized this year for the Blue Ribbon designation were selected as Exemplary High Performing Schools.

Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year. The Department invites National Blue Ribbon School nominations from the top education official in all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Department of Defense Education Activity and the Bureau of Indian Education. Private schools are nominated by The Council for American Private Education (CAPE).

South Park Finally Has An Authentic Local BBQ Joint – Treehouse Bourbon & BBQ

0

South Park finally has their own authentic bbq joint at the new Treehouse Bourbon & BBQ.

When GM Nick Patel took over the old Treehouse Whiskey & Fork (next to Diamonds Direct), he decided to rebrand the restaurant to be more of a local neighborhood hangout, in contrast to the many franchised and national eateries around South Park.

“We take great pride in being a locally owned restaurant in Southpark’s heavily dominated corporate dining scene…you know…A Unicorn,” Patel commented. “We’re a weird restaurant & bar…there’s a tree in the middle of the dining room, there’s an incredible bourbon & beer selection, there’s our super friendly & casual approach to service, our incredibly flavorful food, and our amazing team that truly loves serving our guests.”

The newly rebranded restaurant features small plates of slow-smoked meats, custom-flavored veggies, and a wide selection of custom sandwich and burger creations.

To keep up with the current trends, they’ve even developed 2 flavors of the world’s greatest new food item – candied bacon (cracked black pepper or jalapeno powder);

The new menu features a total of 56 items (cut back from Treehouse Whisky & Fork’s 150+ items) with unique flavors from around the world, including spicy Szechuan and masala dry rub ribs, Hawaiin luau bbq sliders, and Jamaican jerk chicken.

“What we do is take traditional American BBQ and give it International Flair. We take traditionally Smoked Brisket, Pork, & Chicken and send it on a Worldwide Tour of Flavors.  From KC Ribs & Carolina Pork to Peri Peri Shrimp & Korean Bulgogi we take you on an international journey of flavor.” Patel also added that “all our BBQ is served small-plates style so our guests can enjoy a multitude of flavors and share among the table.”

To wash it all down, they have a massive beer and bourbon menu, with unique cocktails, local wines, and uniquely addictive ‘boujee juice’ slushie;

Treehouse Bourbon & BBQ is now open Sunday – Thursday from 11am-11pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-1am. They have daily specials, including; ‘Taco Tuesdays’ ($2.50 tacos), Women’s “Winesdays” (1/2 priced bottles of wine), and “Thirstdays” (1/2 priced drafts and apps).

Official Dates For The 2020 Republican National Convention in Charlotte Announced

0

The 2020 RNC Committee just announced that Republican National Convention will take place from August 24th through August 27th in Uptown Charlotte.

The announcement was made this morning during an official press conference;

The 2020 RNC dates were initially expected to be released last month, but the announcement was delayed due to Hurricane Florence.

The official selection of Charlotte as the host city came back in July, just 2 days after the Charlotte City Council narrowly voted 6-5 to allow the RNC into our city.

After eliminating the potential host cities of Dallas, Nashville, and Milwaukee, the RNC’s two final choices were between Las Vegas and Charlotte.

The committee cited Charlotte’s abundant hotel access, proximity to a major airport, and our proven political convention track record as deciding factors in selecting the Queen City.

What do you think about the RNC coming to Charlotte in 2020?
