Police Warning About New IRS Scam Around The Charlotte Region

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office is now warning people about a growing scam where a caller purports to be with the Internal Revenue Service and tells callers that they are about to be arrested for overdue taxes.

Yesterday alone, the Caldwell County communications center received more than 100 phone calls from people reporting the scam. One at least one occasion, the victim sent the caller money, according to detectives.

Here’s how the increasingly common scam works;

Authorities warn anyone receiving a call from someone who claims to be from the IRS to write down their number but not to talk to them. You should immediately contact your local law enforcement office, the real IRS at 800-829-1040, or the Treasury Inspector General at 800-366-4484. You can also go to their website at www.tigta.gov.

CMPD Asking For Public’s Help In Finding Sexual Assault Suspect

CMPD officials are asking for the public’s help in identifying a sexual assault and carjacking suspect from an incident that occurred this past weekend in West Charlotte.

According to the official statement, “the 22-year-old female victim advised that she was using an ATM in the 1600 block of Woodlawn Road when she was approached by an unknown male. The suspect forced his way into her vehicle with a weapon, drove to another location and attempted to sexually assault the victim.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 5’10”, and was last seen wearing jeans, a two-tone jacket. (possibly gray and white), black and white shoes, black hat and a gray mask covering his nose and mouth.

The suspect may be in possession of the victim’s vehicle, a 2009 Hyundai Sonata with South Carolina tag PEJ-947.”

Christmas Is Officially Starting This Weekend in South Park

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in SouthPark. Winter Wonderland, Charlotte’s favorite open-air ice-skating rink and ultimate Instagram photo op bucket-list destination, kicks off their 2018-2019 season this Saturday with ice skating, treats, games and more.

After a successful 2017 season, this year’s guests will enjoy a 40% larger, 142-foot rink and additional features, and fun, for the entire family. More holiday lights, décor and attractions, including a daily afternoon snowfall, have been added in addition to two 30’ X 30’ heated tents for private holiday parties. Seasonal beverages, like hot chocolate and coffee, and delicious food options will be available. For the second year, Santa’s Pub, the popular adult bounce house with a full bar, and Tree Elves, a service that sends real elves to deliver premium Fraser Fir Christmas trees to your door, will have locations at the event.

The grand re-opening is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. and the first 100 people in line will skate for free plus skate rental. From 2-6 p.m. King of Pops will celebrate this year’s launch of Tree Elves by handing out free pops at the event. They will also host a live DJ and games, in addition to a popsicle eating contest, raffle, tie-dye station and food trucks. The winner of the popsicle eating contest will earn a year’s supply of free pops and the winner of the Tree Elves raffle will win a Christmas Tree-Trimming Bash for their business.

“We are so excited to kick off the 2018 Winter Wonderland season with King of Pops and Tree Elves,” said Bob Durkin, of Winter Wonderland. “Last year’s success made has made this Holiday Festival Experience a staple of Charlotte’s holiday season you won’t want to miss.”

Winter Wonderland will kick off their 2018 season Saturday, Nov. 17, and will continue through Monday, Jan. 7.  This Holiday Festival Experience will open at 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and at 11 a.m. on the weekends until Monday, Dec. 17 when opening hours change to 11 a.m. daily for the remainder of the season.

Admission to Winter Wonderland is free; ice skating with personal skates is $12 and skating, plus skate rental, is $17. Season passes will be available for $99 opening weekend and $149 for the remainder of the season.

Winter Wonderland is located at 4400 Sharon Road, Charlotte, NC 28211 at Symphony Park in the parking lot behind South Park Mall/Dicks Sporting Goods.

Charlotte’s ‘Brave Step’ Celebrates New Program To Help Those Afflicted by Sexual Abuse

For four years the non-profit organization Brave Step has served the Charlotte community, and on Wednesday evening, the organization’s personnel, clients and community members came together to celebrate that accomplishment, along with a host of other achievements the organization has made during the past year.

Founded in 2014, Brave Step’s mission is to strengthen adults impacted by sexual abuse by providing a meaningful step on their healing journey. The survivor-led organization designs personalized care plans and offers inspiration, education and connection for survivors and their loved ones.

“In the last year, Brave Step has taken bold steps in building a solid foundation to serve an unmet need,” said Seth Langson, board president. “We learned a great deal, made improvements and are poised to serve even more in the year ahead. We couldn’t be more grateful for the support we have received from the greater Charlotte community as well as survivors and their loved ones.”

Over the past year, Brave Step experienced a number of firsts, highlighted by the successful execution of the organization’s clinical program prototype, which served more people than expected. Through the program, Brave Step introduced individual counseling, group therapy, an empowerment program and ways to find one’s voice in the Charlotte area. The project was funded by a generous donation from Reemprise Fund and the results were analyzed by System Wide Solutions Inc. (SWS).

Through the clinical program, Brave Step saw 69 individuals receive services, with 35 being new clients. A total of 19 of those 35 entered counseling or therapy services. Approximately half of the potential clients did not require therapy services and utilized another service offered.

“Through our analysis, we found that while many programs and practitioners recognize there are many survivors who could benefit from services, few, if any, have made a concerted, organized effort to identify these survivors, determine what their needs are and refer them to the most effective services at the lowest cost. That’s not the case with the program Brave Step has implemented,” said George Appenzeller of System Wide Solutions, Inc. “We found that Brave Step maximized the resources available to survivors to obtain services and the organization is working toward both effective and efficient means to help this often-overlooked population.”

On top of the success of the clinical program prototype, Brave Step embarked on the organizations’ first formal strategic planning process and fundraising plan development, the first group therapy session and the first restorative yoga program. In addition, Brave Step founder Crystal Emerick also became the organization’s first executive director.

While Brave Step achieved a number of firsts over the course of the past year, the organization continued to build on the success of their Courageous Corner peer-led support group.

“Since June 2015, our Courageous Corner meetings have allowed survivors to find community and connection,” said Emerick. “This past year we reached 50 total individuals who’ve participated in one or more of our twice-monthly meetings. To have a survivor thank us for creating a safe space to share and find continued healing and say they slept better after participating in one of our meetings than they had in years means so much to me and everyone at Brave Step.”

As Brave Step prepares for the year to come, the organization’s leadership continues to evaluate the clinical program prototype as a stepping stone to future efforts, and plans to focus on survivor-centered collaborations, an innovative, replicable, multi-faced healing model and diversifying a sustainable funding base.
