One of Charlotte’s top pizza spots is now getting some major national attention after being named one Yelp’s Top 100 Restaurants in America for 2023.
Geno D’s Pizza was the only restaurant in Charlotte to make the list. The small jersey-styled pizza spot is nestled in the bustling Market at 7th Street food hall in Charlotte.
Yelp’s report describes Geno D’s as follows:
“The regional style is legit: Geno operated a Jersey Shore pizzeria for more than 3 decades, perfecting his dough and toppings for local fans. One of the recipes he brought to Charlotte was Grandma Pizza—traditionally a thin-crust style attributed to Long Island and named for an old-fashioned method of baking without a brick pizza oven, in an oil-coated, rectangular pan. He puts the dough through a long fermentation process in a newly built dough room, then tops it with mozzarella, tomato sauce, and his own take on pesto. Yelpers call the resulting pizza “perfect,” “phenomenal,” and “next level.””

Yelp’s list features 2 other restaurants in the Carolinas – in Greensboro, and Charleston. Freeman’s Grub & Pub stands out as the go-to gastropub in Greensboro and Charleston’s Boxcar Betty’s, known for its customizable antibiotic-free and cage-free chicken sandwiches, grabs the only spot for South Carolina. Notably, Boxcar Betty’s has three outlets in the Charleston vicinity and one in Charlotte.
The top honor of the list goes to Broken Mouth, a fusion Hawaiian-Korean cafe in Los Angeles, boasting a stellar 5-star rating over a thousand Yelp reviews.
