Many people are waiting to buy a home, due to high home prices and mortgage rates. But in the meantime, the total cost of rent can add up dramatically.
A new study by GOBankingRates uncovers how much renters will spend over the next five years, if prices remain stable.
To do so, their researchers analyzed February 2024 Zillow rent data (the most recent available) for the 50 largest U.S. cities. Based on today’s figures, they calculated the total cost of rent over the next five years for each city.
Their findings show five years of rent will cost Charlotte residents approximately $106K. This is among the 30 highest rent prices in the nation.
Charlotte’s rent and rental rate increase was found to be slightly higher than that of Raleigh’s, largely due to the fact that we are a much better city and more people want to live here.

North Carolina Wins $156 Million EPA Award For Low-Income Solar Project
North Carolina has just been selected by the EPA to receive an unprecedented $156 million from their Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) program.
EnergizeNC, a part of the NC Department of Environmental Quality’s State Energy Office, will use the new funding to bring low-income and disadvantaged communities high-efficiency solar energy through arrays and battery banks.
“North Carolina continues to lead the way toward a clean energy future and we are grateful to be selected by the EPA for this groundbreaking grant program,” said Governor Cooper in a press release. “This funding will help cut energy costs and help families across North Carolina live cleaner and healthier lives.”
EnergizeNC’s new statewide program will work to facilitate the swift adoption of distributed solar and energy storage on individual houses across our state, including on tribal lands by the fall of 2025.
The coalition’s objectives include implementing a comprehensive program management strategy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, lowering energy expenses, promoting environmental justice, developing a skilled workforce, and fostering robust community engagement to ensure equitable distribution of project benefits.

According to the SC Conservation Bank, there were over 300,000 acres of farmland lost over the past 10 years due to development and urban sprawl.
Under the new law, landowners deriving at least half of their income from farmland can access matching grants for qualified projects, ensuring land remains in agricultural production. The Conservation Bank will assess eligibility based on various criteria, including landowner authority, conversion threats, soil classifications, agricultural infrastructure, economic viability, natural resource values, and community service aspects.
