Charlotte Heat Mapping Initiative: $25K NOAA Grant To Find Unique ‘Heat Islands’

This summer, Charlotte residents are being asked to help map local hot spots by attaching heat sensors to their cars.

The Charlotte Heat Mappers, supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), are receiving $25,000 in equipment to collect this data. Heat islands form when surfaces like roads and buildings absorb heat, staying warm overnight.

Extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the US, especially impacting communities with little tree cover. In 2023, heat contributed to 3,925 emergency room visits statewide, with most in the Piedmont. This data will guide resource allocation to support vulnerable communities as the planet continues to warm.

The Charlotte Knights Were Just Sold To New York’s DBH

charlotte knightsThe Charlotte Knights are about to get a new out-of-town owner.

New York-based Diamond Baseball Holdings (DBH) just confirmed plans to purchase the team, its 10,000-seat Truist Field, and the bar at the field. The Knights, a Triple-A affiliate of MLB’s Chicago White Sox, relocated to Uptown Charlotte from Fort Mill in 2014.

Don Beaver and Bill Allen originally purchased the Knights back in 1997. They put the team up for sale this past January.

“On behalf of my family, I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, Charlotte Center City Partners and the fans of the Charlotte Knights for supporting our franchise over the years,” Beaver said in a statement. “For the past 25-plus years, the Knights have been a big part of my family’s life and I wish the club much success as it moves into a new chapter with Diamond Baseball Holdings. Truist Field is one of the finest ballparks in the country and baseball is a true staple of the Charlotte community. We will continue to support the Knights and attend as many games as possible.”

This acquisition will add the Knights to DBH’s growing portfolio, marking their 35th minor-league franchise. DBH now controls roughly 29% of the 120 existing minor league baseball clubs.

Recently, DBH also agreed to purchase 2 other teams. They also acquired the affiliates of the Seattle Mariners (the Arkansas Travelers) and the New York Mets (the Binghamton Rumble Ponies).

Top 7 Ways To Keep Your Pets Cool During Charlotte’s Heat Wave

keeping your pet cool in charlotteTemperatures in Charlotte are hitting record levels this week, and while you may be able to put on cooler clothes, your k-9 friends can’t.

Dog’s aren’t about to sweat – their only way of cooling down is to pant with their tongue. The hotter it gets, the harder they have to work to keep themselves cool.

The Humane Society has provided 7 ways to keep your dog cool in this incredibly hot Charlotte weather:

#1 Never leave your pet in a parked car – Even on a cooler day, temperatures can exceed well over 100 degrees in a car.

#2 Use a cooling collar – Cooling collars have been found to keep pets up to 5-10 degrees cooler when temperatures exceed 90 degrees outside. You can pick one up at your local pet store or on Amazon.com for $15. In addition to cooling collars you also have dog cooling mats which also can be a massive helping hand.

#3 Limit exercise. Try to use the early mornings and evening hours to exercise your pet.

#4 Don’t use fans. Fans do not cool pets the same way it does people.

#5 Provide shade and water. When it’s really hot, add ice cubes to make the water extra cool.

#6 Keep them cool inside and out. Make some peanut butter popsicles, wrap your pet in a cooling vest and/or soak your pet in a cool bath.

#7 Make sure to check your pet for signs of heat stroke, including:

  • Panting.
  • Dehydration.
  • Excessive drooling (ptyalism)
  • Increased body temperature – above 103° F (39° C)
  • Reddened gums and moist tissues of the body.
  • Production of only small amounts of urine or no urine.
  • Sudden (acute) kidney failure.
  • Rapid heart rate.

It’s expected to remain in the mid to upper 90s for the rest of the week, so keep you and your pets safe by staying as cool as possible!

Charlotte Council Votes Tonight on $650M Bank of America Stadium Overhaul

Charlotte City Council will vote tonight on whether to contribute $650 million toward renovations at Bank of America Stadium.

The decision has sparked differing opinions among Charlotteans. Some view the stadium transformation as a good community investment, while others believe the money could be better spent elsewhere or that Panthers’ owner David Tepper should fund the improvements himself.

The stadium, nearly 30 years old, is set for revitalization by Tepper, who owns the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC. The tentative agreement requires Tepper to provide $150 million upfront, with promises to invest hundreds of millions more over the next several years.

If approved, funding would come from the city’s Convention Center Fund, raised through a one-percent tax on restaurant tabs and hotel stays.

The new Bank of America Stadium would feature:

  • A park-like setting and exterior video boards for watch parties.
  • A new sound system, scoreboard, and video boards.
  • Social areas with skyline views and improved concessions.
  • Expanded Team Store for Panthers and Charlotte FC fans.
  • New seats and upgraded restrooms.
  • Improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
  • Enhanced safety and security features, including better lighting.
  • Redesigned South Lawn Pavilion for community use.
  • Modernized building systems to reduce environmental impact.

NC Man Going Viral For Discovering Mysterious Space Object In His Field

A North Carolina man is going viral for discovering a rare piece of space debris in a field.

The object, appearing as melted material and metal, likely originated from the reentry of the SpaceX Crew-7 mission to the International Space Station, which returned to Earth on March 12, 2024.

Astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics confirmed this, stating it matches the Crew-7 Dragon’s trunk reentry path. Dragon capsules return to Earth safely in controlled descents slowed by parachutes, but their trunks detach just before reentry.

NASA has since confirmed these items are part of the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

NASA advises those who find space debris not to handle or retrieve it. Instead, they should contact the SpaceX Debris Hotline at 1-866-623-0234 or email recovery@spacex.com.

There’s no word yet if NASA will request the piece from the North Carolina man.

The Rise of Online Nursing Programs and Their Impact on Charlotte’s Healthcare

Online nursing programs have revolutionized the education landscape, offering flexible learning options for aspiring nurses. In Charlotte, these programs are significantly influencing the local healthcare industry. Understanding their impact can provide valuable insights into the future of healthcare in the region.

As an aspiring nurse or someone interested in the healthcare sector, you might be curious about the rise of online nursing programs. These programs have not only made education more accessible but also significantly influenced the local healthcare system in Charlotte. By examining their effects, you can gain a clearer picture of how they are transforming the industry.

The Advantages of Online Nursing Programs

One of the most compelling benefits of online nursing programs is their flexibility. Unlike traditional classroom settings, online courses allow you to study at your own pace and according to your schedule. This flexibility is especially beneficial for working professionals or those with family obligations. Additionally, MSN FNP nurse practitioner programs online provide specialized training that can further your career while accommodating your lifestyle. The convenience of accessing course materials from anywhere has made it possible for many to pursue a nursing career without geographical limitations.

Another significant benefit of online nursing programs is the cost savings they offer compared to traditional on-campus programs. Online students can save on expenses like transportation, housing, and textbooks. Many online programs also offer competitive tuition rates, making them an affordable option for those looking to advance their nursing careers without excessive financial strain. This financial accessibility has opened doors for many aspiring nurses who may have otherwise been unable to pursue higher education.

The Impact on Local Healthcare Facilities

The rise of online nursing programs has had a profound effect on healthcare facilities in Charlotte. With more qualified nurses entering the workforce, hospitals and clinics have been able to improve patient care and reduce staff shortages. Moreover, these programs often incorporate cutting-edge technology and up-to-date medical practices, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of modern healthcare. This infusion of skilled professionals helps enhance the overall quality of healthcare services available to residents.

Online nursing programs also contribute to the development of a more diverse healthcare workforce in Charlotte. By removing barriers to education, these programs attract students from various backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. This diversity enriches the healthcare environment, promoting cultural competency and improving patient outcomes. As healthcare facilities in Charlotte welcome graduates from online nursing programs, they benefit from the unique perspectives and skills these professionals bring to the table.

Addressing the Nursing Shortage

Charlotte, like many other regions, has faced a persistent nursing shortage over the years. Online nursing programs play a crucial role in addressing this issue by increasing the number of trained nurses entering the workforce. These programs make it easier for individuals from diverse backgrounds to obtain a nursing education, thereby broadening the pool of potential healthcare providers. As more people take advantage of these opportunities, the gap in healthcare provision continues to narrow, benefiting both patients and medical institutions alike.

Moreover, online nursing programs help combat the nursing shortage by offering accelerated pathways to nursing degrees. Many programs provide RN-to-BSN or RN-to-MSN options, allowing registered nurses to quickly advance their education and take on more specialized roles. This fast-tracking of nursing education helps fill critical positions in Charlotte’s healthcare facilities, ensuring that patients receive the care they need in a timely manner. As the demand for healthcare services continues to grow, these accelerated online programs will play an increasingly vital role in maintaining a strong nursing workforce.

Enhancing Career Opportunities

Pursuing an online nursing program can open up numerous career opportunities for you in Charlotte’s healthcare sector. Advanced degrees and specialized certifications can lead to higher-paying positions and greater job satisfaction. The ability to balance work, study, and personal life makes these programs an attractive option for many aspiring nurses. Furthermore, as online education becomes increasingly recognized and respected within the industry, graduates find themselves well-equipped to take on leadership roles and make significant contributions to their workplaces.

Online nursing programs also provide opportunities for nurses to network with professionals from diverse geographical locations. Through virtual classrooms and online forums, students can connect with peers and instructors from across the country or even around the world. These connections can lead to valuable collaborations, knowledge sharing, and career opportunities that may not have been possible in a traditional classroom setting. As Charlotte’s healthcare industry continues to grow and evolve, the ability to network with professionals beyond the local area can be a significant advantage for nurses looking to advance their careers.

When are the Best Seasons to Fish in Charlotte?

0

Charlotte residents are lucky to enjoy all four seasons over the year, but they also need to be aware of how these different times can affect their favorite pastimes. Fishing is one of the top hobbies in the region, but the types of angling vary greatly throughout the year.

Along with being able to catch diverse fish at different times, it’s also important to be aware of the digital fishing options. These are abundant in the online world, and new technology is helping people discover fresh ways to enjoy fishing as well.

Entertainment Industry Provides Plenty of Fishing Alternatives

Fishing is a popular pastime in Charlotte, and interest in the activity spans beyond the physical realm. Indeed, some of the top entertainment offerings for people here are based on fishing. Many people play Big Bass Splash, for instance, which is one of the most cherished slot games on the market. The Pragmatic Play title is a crowd pleaser and is one of many options in the Big Bass franchise. It uses a cartoony fishing theme and features an array of colorful creatures on the reels.

Virtual reality also offers a new way for people to enjoy fishing from the comfort of their homes. There are numerous titles that aim to give users a chance to cast a line and hook fish, without having to fork out on equipment and visit a waterway. Some of the best options for VR users include Real VR Fishing and Ultimate Fishing Simulator. These act as a great way for anglers to sharpen their skills in their free time as well.

Spring and Summer Offer the Best Fishing Opportunities

Most anglers in the city will agree that the warmer seasons of the year make for the best times to fish. Along with the climate allowing for a top relaxing experience, the fish are more active. This means that it can be easier for amateur anglers to pick up some great catches. The bass are more aggressive during March to May, while it’s also a good opportunity to target catfish and crappie as well.

June to August offer up a great chance to do some night fishing, as the fish tend to stay deeper in the day to avoid the heat. Fishermen and women can expect to encounter striped bass at these times, along with sunfish and bluegill.

Fall and Winter Are Slightly More Challenging

When the climate cools down, some people may not find it quite as relaxing to sit out all day monitoring fishing lines. However, others relish the challenges fall and winter bring, and like to make the most of the different species available.

Some of the best locations for fishing in fall and winter include Lake Norman and Mountain Island Lake. The best way to make the most of these spots is to focus on deeper areas and drop-offs, and there’s the chance to catch some hefty sized trout at this time.

It’s no wonder that Charlotte has such a vast number of keen fishers, as the city is a prime spot for angling throughout the year. Along with trying out different fishing seasons, it’s worth experimenting with digital options to get even more variety.
