Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how people work, learn, and do business. While supporters see enormous economic potential, critics warn about job losses, privacy concerns, misinformation, and cybersecurity risks. Now, North Carolina is laying out its plan to navigate both sides of that transformation.

State leaders have released a comprehensive AI Strategic Roadmap that aims to make North Carolina a national leader in artificial intelligence while emphasizing responsible use, transparency, and human oversight. The roadmap is designed to guide state agencies, businesses, schools, healthcare providers, and local governments as AI adoption accelerates.

“Artificial intelligence is already changing how we work, learn, and serve the people of our state, and North Carolina must lead with urgency and care,” said Governor Josh Stein in a press release. “This roadmap gives our state a strategy to protect people from harm, prepare our workforce for opportunity, and transform how government serves the public. Together, we can make North Carolina a place where innovation and trust move forward together.”  

Among the plan’s major initiatives are:

• Expanding AI education and workforce training through K-12 schools, community colleges, and universities.
• Modernizing government services using AI to improve efficiency and reduce processing times.
• Creating statewide AI governance standards and oversight.
• Strengthening cybersecurity and protecting sensitive personal data.
• Promoting transparency by requiring agencies to disclose when AI influences decisions.
• Supporting businesses that adopt AI responsibly while attracting new AI companies and investment.
• Preparing North Carolina’s power grid, infrastructure, and workforce for growing AI demand.

The roadmap acknowledges that AI presents significant challenges alongside its benefits. It identifies risks including workforce disruption, algorithmic bias, fraud, deepfakes, privacy concerns, and increasing demands on electricity, water, and computing infrastructure as AI data centers continue expanding.

To address those concerns, the state plans to require human oversight of AI systems used by government agencies, establish clear governance policies, conduct risk assessments before deployment, and improve AI literacy so residents can better recognize AI-generated scams and misinformation.

The strategy is particularly relevant for the Charlotte region, which has become one of the Southeast’s fastest-growing technology and financial hubs. AI is already reshaping industries including banking, healthcare, logistics, advanced manufacturing, and software development, while also driving demand for new data centers and high-tech infrastructure across North Carolina.

State officials say the roadmap is intended to help North Carolina capture the economic benefits of artificial intelligence while establishing safeguards to reduce potential risks. As AI continues to evolve, the plan is expected to serve as the state’s blueprint for balancing innovation with public trust.

NC-based Martin Marietta has just announced the acquisition of limestone supplier Lhoist North America in a transaction that includes approximately $7 billion in cash and $6.5 billion in company stock.

The acquisition is the largest ever for Martin Marietta, which has a market value exceeding $36 billion and is one of the nation’s leading suppliers of construction materials.

Martin Marietta produces crushed stone, sand, gravel, asphalt, and specialty materials used to build highways, bridges, commercial developments, and other major infrastructure projects. Lhoist North America manufactures lime, limestone, and other mineral products used in steel production, water treatment, agriculture, and construction.

Company leaders say the combined business will be better positioned to meet growing demand from data center construction, semiconductor manufacturing, and infrastructure projects across the United States.

The acquisition also expands Martin Marietta’s footprint throughout the fast-growing Sun Belt, where both companies already have significant operations.

The historic deal will strengthen the supply chain for major construction projects across the Carolinas. Martin Marietta already operates numerous quarries in the Charlotte region, and Lhoist’s network of facilities across the Southeast could improve access to key construction materials for contractors working throughout the region.

Industry analysts say the acquisition further cements Raleigh-based Martin Marietta’s position as one of the world’s leading building materials companies while reinforcing North Carolina’s growing influence in the infrastructure and construction industries.

The announcement follows a wave of consolidation across the building materials sector as companies race to expand capacity and meet demand fueled by population growth and large-scale development projects.
