A thin waning crescent moon will emerge to Saturn’s left, completing the smiling formation tilted approximately 45 degrees relative to the horizon, according to the BBC.

Venus and Saturn will serve as the “eyes,” while the crescent moon will form the “mouth” of this rare planetary arrangement. While Venus and the moon will be visible without aid, Saturn may be harder to spot due to its lower brightness and proximity to the sun’s glare.

Viewers are urged to take caution and never look directly toward the sun. Observers should find an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon for the best chance of seeing the alignment.

In addition to the planetary smile, Mercury may become visible near the horizon shortly after the moon rises. Though Neptune will also be nearby—about one degree to the right of the moon—it will be far too faint to see without a telescope.

Major Gas Leak Shuts Down Rea Road in Charlotte

A gas leak forced a partial closure of Rea Road in south Charlotte after a third-party contractor struck an underground gas line near Olde Providence Park around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Piedmont Natural Gas crews responded to the scene and turned off the gas flow early Thursday morning. While the leak did not impact service for any customers, officials said the road is expected to remain partially blocked for several hours as repairs continue.

The company confirmed that the contractor responsible was not affiliated with Piedmont Natural Gas. Repair work is expected to be completed by Thursday afternoon.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area near Rea Road and Olde Providence Park until the roadway fully reopens.

This morning at 12:16 AM, a 2.3 magnitude earthquake struck the small town of Elgin in Kershaw County between Charlotte and Columbia.

The new quake brings the total to 91 earthquakes and aftershocks around the small South Carolina town over the past 2 years.

The earthquakes around Elgin have been increasing in number and magnitude since they first started in late 2021, with the largest being a magnitude 3.6, which knocked out the power for hundreds in the area.

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Charlotte region over the past few years. Last year, we experienced the largest earthquake in over 100 years when a 5.1 magnitude quake hit Sparta, NC, and since then, dozens of aftershocks have continued to rattle our state.

According to USGS.gov, “Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”

The Charlotte City Council has just unanimously approved a rezoning request from Atlanta-based Flournoy Development Group to build a massive new 52-acre site mixed-use development in University City.

The new project is located at 2200 One Electrolux Way and 10200 Claude Freeman Drive, was rezoned from office institutional and single-family residential use to a community activity center district exception (CAC-1 EX). The change allows for the construction of up to 580 residential units and 7,500 square feet of commercial space.

The multi-phased project will include 320 apartments and 3,000 square feet of retail in its first phase. A second phase will add 240 apartments, 20 townhomes, and 4,500 square feet of commercial space. The development prohibits drive-throughs and incorporates several sustainability and public benefit measures, including two acres of open space, $10,000 toward park improvements, and construction to National Green Building Standards.

Flournoy plans to acquire the property from Centene Corp., which purchased it in 2020 for $9 million. Centene later abandoned a corporate campus plan on the adjacent 80-acre property.

The project includes transportation improvements on David Taylor Drive and Claude Freeman Drive, new multi-use paths, sidewalks, and two ADA-compliant bus stops. Trip generation for the new zoning is expected to be lower than previous entitlements, dropping from 4,366 to 3,368 daily trips.

This will be Flournoy’s fourth Charlotte project, joining developments in Ballantyne, Mallard Creek, and NoDa.

A construction timeline for the University City project has not been announced.

Governor Josh Stein announced Tuesday that the state is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the 2013 murder of Nancy Grubert-Harvey.

Grubert-Harvey, 52, was found dead on January 25, 2013, at her used auto dealership, the Atlanta Car Company, located at 1896 Old U.S. Highway 52 in Lexington. More than a decade later, the case remains unsolved.

The announcement renews attention on the cold case as law enforcement continues to search for leads. The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office and State Bureau of Investigation are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Grubert-Harvey was remembered by loved ones as kind, fair, and selfless. She was also described as a business owner who broke the mold of the typical used car salesperson. At the time of her death, she was looking forward to the birth of her second grandchild.
