Street Closures Begin in Uptown Charlotte Ahead of Lovin’ Life Music Festival

Street closures began Monday in Uptown as crews prepared for the upcoming Lovin’ Life Music Festival.

Roads surrounding Uptown Charlotte’s First Ward Park are now blocked off while workers assemble outdoor stages for the three-day event.

The festival runs Friday through Sunday and will feature headliners including Gwen Stefani, Benson Boone, and the Dave Matthews Band. Organizers say this year’s lineup will also highlight local talent, expanding the festival’s reach and cultural relevance.

Festival director Gregg McConnell confirmed that ticket sales remain consistent with last year’s turnout of 86,000 attendees during the inaugural event.

Despite minor issues in 2023—including sound overlap, rain delays, and navigation challenges—the first Lovin’ Life Festival received strong community support and critical acclaim.

USA Today named it one of the Top 10 New Festivals in the US. Officials encourage visitors to plan ahead for traffic changes and expect large crowds in the Uptown area throughout the weekend.

North Carolina Falls to 43rd in America for Teacher Pay

North Carolina now ranks 43rd in the nation for average teacher pay, according to a new report from the National Education Association (NEA). The state dropped five spots from last year, underscoring growing concerns about educator compensation and its impact on workforce stability.

The NEA’s latest data reveals that the average teacher salary in North Carolina stands at $58,292—just below the state’s calculated living wage of $58,411. The NEA report also shows that NC’s average starting salary is just $42,542, coming it at 39th nationwide for entry-level pay.

Low salaries continue to hinder efforts to recruit and retain qualified educators, particularly amid a national teacher shortage and declining morale driven by poor working conditions. NEA’s report highlights that teacher pay has failed to keep up with inflation over the past decade, making it harder for educators to afford basic needs.

In an attempt to help the situation, a bipartisan group of legislators in our state is now attempting to boost our numbers with House Bill 192 (Raise Teacher Pay & Dollar Allot).

If passed, the bill would raise teacher starting salaries to $50,000 and provide up to $12,280 in raises, with additional increases for experienced educators and those with master’s degrees.

In recognition of tomorrow’s first anniversary of the tragedy which took the lives of four police officers in Charlotte, Bojangles is showing its appreciation for the city’s first responders by offering free meals on Thursday, May 1. The brand’s West Blvd. location will also host a ceremonial stop for PepsiCo’s Rolling Remembrance truck, and encourages first responders to stop by during the event – and throughout the day – for a meal on Bo. 

All day (from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) on May 1, any first responder in uniform or with identification will receive a free Combo Meal of their choice at Bojangles at 300 West Blvd. At 1 p.m., PepsiCo’s Rolling Remembrance, a 14,000 mile-relay of an American war-flown-flag from

Seattle to New York, will stop at the restaurant to raise awareness and encourage donations for the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation.

“We know this is going to be a difficult week for our law enforcement and first responder community – not just on the anniversary itself, but throughout the days that follow,” said Ken Reynolds, director of corporate and community affairs at Bojangles. “We wanted to offer a small gesture of comfort and support and would love for first responders to stop by for a meal and stay to help us salute the Rolling Remembrance truck as it continues its journey.” 

To honor the brand’s commitment to supporting the military and celebrate this noteworthy relay, Bojangles invites the community to welcome the Rolling Remembrance truck’s arrival, led by a CMPD escort, while also enjoying a presentation of arms by West Charlotte High School JROTC and national anthem by the award-winning West Charlotte High School marching band, the pledge of allegiance, a performance of God Bless America and remarks from key spokespeople.

North Carolina Launches 2025 Operation Fan Heat Relief To Give Away Free Fans This Summer

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Aging is partnering with local agencies to distribute fans statewide through Operation Fan Heat Relief. The program runs from May 1 to October 31, 2025, and aims to protect older adults and adults with disabilities from heat-related illnesses.

Residents aged 60 and older, as well as adults with disabilities, are eligible to apply for assistance through local service providers across North Carolina. This year’s effort continues a longstanding initiative that began in 1986 to create safer, more comfortable living environments during extreme heat.

Last year, the Division of Aging received $86,000 in donations, enabling the distribution of 3,670 fans and 35 air conditioners across 94 counties. Major contributions from Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress, and Dominion helped fund the program.

Participating agencies will use donations to purchase fans and, when necessary, a limited number of air conditioners for individuals with health conditions requiring cooler environments. Staying cool is crucial because older adults with chronic illnesses often cannot sense or react to temperature changes, and some medications worsen heat sensitivity.

To stay safe during high temperatures, residents are encouraged to increase fluid intake, spend time in cool spaces, limit strenuous activity during peak heat hours, and consult physicians about medication risks.

Odyssey Logistics Relocates Global Headquarters to Charlotte

Odyssey Logistics, a global leader in logistics and technology, has officially relocated its headquarters to Charlotte, further expanding its footprint in the region. The company celebrated the move with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Whitehall Corporate Center.

Owned by private equity firm The Jordan Group, Odyssey employs over 2,000 people across 82 locations worldwide.

The relocation adds 80 high-paying jobs to Charlotte, with an average salary of $111,000, bringing the company’s total local workforce to 155.

“Our new home in Charlotte is a mutually beneficial development both for our organization and for the North Carolina business community, a region that is ideal for Odyssey as we embark on our next chapter of growth,” said Odyssey CEO Hans Stig Moller in a press release. “Charlotte connects Odyssey with a strong talent pool, which continues to grow thanks to the city’s quality of life. Our new location also provides updated facilities and convenient proximity to a key international airport and our clients.”

Charlotte’s growing transportation infrastructure—including four major interstates, 800 miles of rail, and the world’s sixth-busiest airport—played a key role in attracting Odyssey.

The project was a collaboration between the city, Mecklenburg County, and the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina.

Massive Tanker Explosion Shuts Down NC’s I-40 In Both Directions

A crash early Tuesday on North Carolina’s Interstate 40 caused a tractor-trailer to explode into flames. The incident happened near Exit 355 by Faison in northern Sampson County, forcing authorities to close I-40 in both directions.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed the explosion involved a single tractor-trailer, though multiple vehicles were impacted.

At least one injury has been reported, but officials have not released information about the condition of those involved.

Authorities have not disclosed what materials the tractor-trailer was carrying at the time of the explosion. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and crews are working to clear debris and assess roadway damage.

Travelers are advised to avoid the area and expect significant delays as the closure may extend throughout much of the day.

Construction just kicked off at Spectrum Center as the Charlotte Hornets launched their phase 2 of their $245 million renovation.

Among the expected upgrades are wider concourses, more seating and a new design features that give fans a better view of the Charlotte Hornets‘ court, even from concession areas.

It’s all part of a multimillion dollar effort to modernize the arena, which sees over 1 million visitors annually. The Hornets say it’s not just a facelift, it’s about rethinking how fans experience sports, concerts and live events.

The new First Horizon Theatre Box emerges as a key feature. This high-end space holds 120 people and includes its lounge, marking the bank’s first partnership with the team.

Re!magine Spectrum Center meets the evolving needs of all arena stakeholders, starting with guests and including the building’s primary tenants – the Charlotte Hornets – as well as major music tours, family shows and other globally recognized events, such as the Democratic National Convention or the NBA All-Star Game, which the building hosted in 2012 and 2019, respectively. Renovations will focus on:

  • Elevating the Overall Guest Experience – Throughout the arena there will be more gathering spaces for fans with increased visibility into the bowl. Renovations completed in 2024 will focus on modifications to better support traffic flow, including the addition of a fourth vomitory in the lower level, wider corridors and entrance alterations. In 2025, the Main Concourse will be renovated, unveiling four themed “destinations” for fans, inspired by the unique communities across the Carolinas. New, enhanced fan engagement areas will be introduced and the retail experience will be improved.
  • Additional Seating – An additional 2,500 lower-level seats will be added in 2025, allowing many more fans to be closer to the action. All seats throughout the bowl will also be replaced at that time.
  • Uptown Concourse Enhancements – In addition to significant improvements to Uptown Concourse lighting, signage and concession locations on the Uptown Concourse, the Dr Pepper Pavilion and The Nest fan section will be redesigned in 2024, offering new amenities for some of the Hornets’ most passionate fans.
  • Club & Hospitality Experiences – All premium spaces, including clubs and suites, will be transformed over the course of the two summers. In 2024, the two existing Event Level clubs will be relocated and a new Courtside Club will be added, allowing for hundreds more seats to be inclusive of club amenities. In addition, the entire Suite Level will be renovated in 2024, followed by the Founders Level in 2025.
  • Diversified Premium Offerings – The reimagined Suite Level will offer five different suite options that can accommodate anywhere from two to 130 guests, providing increased access to premium spaces at a wider range of price points. In addition to 28 Standard Suites, Spectrum Center will have four Party Suites, 13 Mini Suites, one Super Suite and one Theater Box that will offer a completely new all-inclusive experience.
  • Food & Beverage Experiences – Throughout Spectrum Center, impactful technology will be utilized to create more frictionless interactions that will improve the overall concession experience, including additional grab-and-go markets. There will be expanded and enhanced menu options and additional bar offerings that will delight all patrons. In addition, more social gathering spaces will be near food and beverage areas, with increased visibility into the bowl, creating an unmatched experience for guests regardless of where they are in the arena.
  • Back-of-House Upgrades – In addition to public facing areas, the arena’s back-of-house spaces will see significant changes to better support team, promoter, crew and entertainer needs – helping set Spectrum Center up for long-term success.

The PGA of America today named Atrium Health as the Official Health Care Provider and a Community Partner of the 2025 PGA Championship.

Atrium Health, a nationally recognized leader in shaping health outcomes, will deliver all necessary medical services to ensure a safe PGA Championship for players, spectators and volunteers at Quail Hollow Club, May 12-18.

Atrium Health has extensive experience with large events, having provided medical services at numerous major events in Charlotte, including the most recent annual PGA Tour event– the Wells Fargo Championship. Additionally, Atrium Health (which is part of Advocate Health) and the PGA of America previously partnered to provide a safe experience during the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club.

Business diversity is essential for economic resilience. It creates broader opportunities, supports a wider range of workforce needs, and strengthens downtowns by relying on a diverse industry mix instead of any single sector.

CommercialCafe’s recent analysis uses the Shannon Equitability Index to assess this crucial aspect, ranking CBDs by the diversity of their industry sectors, business sizes, and office space classifications.

This index allows us to move beyond simple counts, measuring the balance of these elements to reveal if a CBD has a healthy ecosystem, that provides opportunities for everything from small businesses, to startups and corporations.

Here are some of the key highlights:

Charlotte ranked 5th overall among the country’s top 20 CBDs for business diversity with a total of 22 out of 30 points.

  • Having looked at the distribution of businesses across CBDs, we found Charlotte had the 2nd-most balanced spread among companies with different levels of employment. Here, 62.8% of firms have fewer than 10 workers, while 9.5% of firms in the city’s CBD have a staff of 50 to 249 workers.
  • The real estate market in Charlotte is heavily tilted toward state-of-the-art workspaces that tend to command higher asking rents, with 42% of overall office space within the CBD is labeled Class A+, another 53% are Class A, and only 5% Class B.

At a regional level, Southern cities played a major role in the ranking by contributing nearly half of the total number of entries, with other noteworthy mentions including Louisville, Ky. (9th place); Houston (10th place); and Jacksonville, Fla. (18th place).
