#1 Japanese Festival “Bon Odori 2015”

The Bon Odori Festival returns to the Queen City for the 31st year, bringing Japanese culture to the Wells Fargo Atrium, 301 South Tryon Street, on Saturday, August 1st, 2015, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be a traditional tea ceremony, food from Japanese restaurants, dancing, drumming, door prizes, martial arts exhibition, crafts and children’s activities.

This popular event in Uptown Charlotte is free and is hosted by the Japanese Association in Charlotte and The Japanese Language School in Charlotte.

#2 Charlotte Knights vs. Buffalo Bisons

#4 Whitewater Center River Jam

Have you ever struggled to find a place to sleep at night? Have you ever worried about what you will eat today, or if someone might steal all your possessions?

Last year, two college students in Charlotte decided to find out.

After months of research and planning, they decided to leave everything behind in order to fully experience the life of a homeless person. Three Charlotte area videographers and a film producer volunteered their time to make the documentary a reality;

The Glimpse documentary will be premiering at the Knight Gallery on August 4th.

Tyler Hansbrough was a true super-star at The University of North Carolina from 2005 to 2009. He helped the Tar Heels win the NCAA championship in 2009

Tyler is now a six-year pro-basketball veteran, and has spent the last two years with the Toronto Raptors.

His best NBA season so far was 2010-11, when he averaged 11 points and 5.2 rebounds and started a career-high 29 games.

The Hornets general manager Rich Cho says in a release the 6-foot-9, 250-pound Hansbrough “brings energy and physicality every time he steps on the floor.”

Armed-Teacher-SignYork County public school teachers are now preparing for the unthinkable – what would happen if a school shooting happened in their classroom?

The Charlotte Observer recently published an opinion article by Kay McSpadden, a high school English teacher in York County.

“After Columbine we started having armed intruder drills where we stopped what we were doing and locked our doors…now we routinely practice hiding during lockdown drills…during our planning period we look up information about ballistics and map out the spot in our rooms where our students are least likely to be shot…that’s what it is to be a teacher in America now.”

york county teachers trainingSchools are now implementing various new security plans including arming teachers, adding police officers and armed security guards, changing how schools are designed and adding bulletproof backpacks and whiteboards to schools.

Educators are also being taught basic strategies on how to disarm would-be shooters. They’re taught how to find the room’s “blind spot”: a place where they won’t be seen when the shooter entered the room. It’s also the best position to use the element of surprise if they needed to disarm the shooter.

Donald Trump Attacks Governor McCrory For Being “Not Harsh Enough On The Gays”

While some are accusing Pat McCrory of passing an “anti-LGBT” law, Donald Trump just blasted the North Carolina Governor on Twitter for being “not harsh enough on the gays”;

Donald Trump posted the tweet in reference to McCrory’s veto of last year’s North Carolina State Legislature’s bill which would have exempted county magistrates and registers of deeds from issuing marriage licenses if the marriages conflict with their religious views.

On May 28, 2015, Governor McCrory issued a veto of the legislation because of his concern for adherence to state law.[15] The veto message stated:

I recognize that for many North Carolinians, including myself, opinions on same-sex marriage come from sincerely held religious beliefs that marriage is between a man and a woman.

However, we are a nation and a state of laws. Whether it is the president, governor, mayor, a law enforcement officer or magistrate, no public official who voluntarily swears to support and defend the Constitution and to discharge all duties of their office should be exempt from upholding that oath; therefore, I veto Senate Bill 2.[15][13]
