According to the Lottery Commission, a South Carolina resident has finally stepped forward to claim the largest jackpot paid to a single person in US history.

The $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot ticket was sold at the Circle K gas station on Garners Ferry Rd, Columbia, SC, for selling the ticket, the store will receive a prize of $50,000.

According to the commission’s statement, the winner marveled that every single decision they made that day led to purchasing the winning ticket – including allowing a fellow customer to make a Mega Millions lottery ticket purchase in front of the winner while in line at the store.

The winner has decided to remain anonymous, which is only allowed in certain states, including South Carolina (you cannot remain anonymous if you were to win in North Carolina).

The anonymous South Carolina resident decided to choose the cash option over the annuity option, resulting in a one-time payment of roughly $878,000,000.
