So far, every NFL player has been paid in US Dollars. Now, as alternative currencies grow in popularity, some athletes are beginning to look elsewhere.

Carolina Panthers’ offensive tackle Russell Okung just officially broke the trend and will now be receiving about 240 bitcoins as half of his salary (worth 6.5 million US Dollars). The other half of his $13 million salary will be paid to him in US dollars.

According to Sports Illustrated, Okung will be the first professional athlete to be paid in Bitcoin.

“Players from both the Brooklyn Nets and Yankees have reportedly shown interest in using the product, though it is unclear whether such a payment plan would be approved by the NBPA or MLBPA,” Sports Illustrated reported.

Russell Okung was selected as the #6 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. He is currently a 2-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl Champion (2013).
