Governor Cooper has just signed a State Disaster Declaration for the Gaston County town of Cherryville. This comes in response to the significant damage inflicted on Cherryville by straight-line winds and a rare supercell thunderstorm that recently swept across the city.

“This state disaster declaration will help the people of Cherryville as they recover from strong winds and a thunderstorm,” said Cooper in a press release.

The order, issued by the Governor, grants state-funded public assistance to eligible local governments. It aids in debris removal and implementing emergency protective measures, which are crucial steps towards restoring normalcy in the city. The disaster declaration will remain in effect for sixty days following its issuance.

A joint preliminary damage assessment was conducted by local and state emergency management officials following a state of emergency declaration by the Mayor and the City Council of Cherryville on May 17. The assessment uncovered that Cherryville had borne more than $10,000 in damages due to the devastating weather event.

The City of Cherryville, part of Gaston County, is steeped in history, with a rich textile past that shaped the city’s character. Known for its resilience and community spirit, the city and its people are now confronting this new challenge with their enduring determination. This state assistance stands as a testament to the collective efforts made by the community and local authorities in the face of disaster.
