Last night at the opening of Super Bowl LVIII, Charlotte’s own Sainted Trap Choir (of recent America’s Got Talent fame) and renowned soul singer Andra Day together sang a gospel-inspired rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often referred to as the Black National Anthem.

Written in 1899 by civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson, the song has become a symbol of pride and resilience.

Super Bowl LVIII marks only the fourth time the anthem has been featured in the event’s history since its Super Bowl debut in 2021.

The performance was co-arranged by Charlotte native Dennis Reed Jr., the Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter, rapper, producer, teacher, and inspirer out of Charlotte who’s introduced President Obama on stage in Charlotte, toured with Fantasia, and performed live for Oprah Winfrey.

The North Carolina Zoo has just added a massive area of land to its stunning Ridges Mountain Nature Preserve, 139 more acres to be exact, bringing the total size to 423 acres. Originally established in 2000 through a collaboration with the Piedmont Land Conservancy, the Ridges Mountain Nature Preserve’s latest expansion ensures the complete protection of the mountain under the stewardship of the North Carolina Zoo. This brings the zoo’s total managed land to 2,805 acres, including its 512-acre animal habitat and infrastructure. Situated within the ancient Uwharrie Mountains, about 10 miles west of Asheboro, N.C., Ridges Mountain stands at an elevation of 840 feet and is celebrated for its ecological significance and geological uniqueness, providing vital habitat for wildlife such as bobcats, deer, and numerous bird species.

“This acquisition helps the North Carolina Zoo reach its broader vision of natural resource conservation and outdoor recreation,” sayed North Carolina Zoo CEO Pat Simmons in a press release. “Ridges Mountain is an exceptional natural space inhabited by unique plant and animal life deserving of appreciation and protection. For the first time in over two centuries, Brood XIX and XIII cicadas are set to emerge simultaneously, creating a super-swamp that scientists predict will be over 1 trillion strong.

Periodical cicadas typically surface in 13 or 17-year cycles, with different broods appearing every five to six years in separate geographical areas. This year, however, is exceptional as Brood XIX and Brood XIII, two of the largest brood types, are not only adjacent but also slightly overlapping in their emergence zones.

Brood XIX, also known as The Great Southern Brood, emerges every 13 years and spans across the southeastern U.S., reaching as far north as Illinois. Here, it intersects with the 17-year cycle of Brood XIII. This remarkable event, last recorded during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency in 1803, marks the first time in 221 years that these broods will hatch in the same year.

While the mating calls of cicadas can be loud and persistent, these insects are harmless to humans, as they do not sting, bite, or carry toxins. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) highlights the ecological benefits of cicadas, noting they serve as a food source for birds and contribute to soil nutrition upon decomposition. However, they can pose a risk to young trees if female cicadas lay eggs in them. To safeguard trees, the EPA advises using mesh or netting with holes smaller than ¼-inch to cover them.

York County is about to open it’s newest park on the banks of Lake Wylie.

The new 60-acre Thistle Park is located near Lake Wylie’s old Five Points intersection, near the intersection of Lake Wylie Rd. and Hand Mills Highway.

The new park will feature a full disc golf course, picnic shelters, fishing areas, a 3-acre dog park, and over 3 miles of hiking trails.

While specific construction and opening timelines are pending, local leaders speculate it could open sometime in 2025.
