Mecklenburg County commissioners have just approved a new $790,000 incentive grant to entice Tokyo-based Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) to Charlotte, where the global banking giant plans to establish a new U.S. headquarters, invest $50.5 million, and create 2,000 jobs by 2027.
The county incentive is tied to SMBC meeting specific job creation and investment targets before receiving the funds.
SMBC is one of the world’s largest financial institutions and plans to use the Charlotte headquarters to expand its banking, leasing, securities, and consumer finance operations across the United States.
State officials estimate the project will generate approximately $13.4 billion in economic impact, making it one of the most significant economic development announcements in the region in recent years.
The project further strengthens Charlotte’s position as the nation’s second-largest banking center behind New York. The city already serves as a major hub for Bank of America, Truist, Wells Fargo, and numerous international financial firms.
The expansion also reflects North Carolina’s growing economic ties with Japan. More than 230 Japanese companies currently operate across the state, including major investments from Toyota and Fujifilm.
SMBC’s decision comes as the company restructures portions of its U.S. operations and focuses on expanding key business lines.
The new global headquarters will reinforce Charlotte’s reputation as one of the country’s largest financial centers.
