Two Earthquakes Strike Between Charlotte and Greenville Just 17 Minutes Apart

A pair of earthquakes rattled the same area of South Carolina late last night, with both occurring within minutes of each other between Charlotte and Greenville.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 1.8 earthquake struck near Cross Anchor in Union County at 6:05 pm. A second quake measuring magnitude 1.9 followed at 6:22 pm.

The first earthquake occurred about 8 kilometers east of Cross Anchor at a depth of 6.8 kilometers. The second struck about 9 kilometers east of town at a shallower depth of 1.6 kilometers.

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Charlotte region over the past few years. Last year, we experienced the largest earthquake in over 100 years when a 5.1 magnitude quake hit Sparta, NC, and since then, dozens of aftershocks have continued to rattle our state.

According to USGS.gov, “Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”

Have you felt any of the quakes?
