Police Fatally Shoot Armed Suspect After Taking Hostages In Gaston County Diner

Yesterday afternoon, a deadly encounter with police occurred after an armed robbery, a police chase, and a hostage situation inside a small grill.

According to Gaston County police, it all began when officers received a call about a woman who was robbed at gunpoint at an HVAC business off Earl Road. The suspect took the woman’s cellphone, wedding ring, and cash, then fled the scene.

Officers used GPS tracking from the stolen cell phone to find the suspect in Cherryville. The suspect then fled in a vehicle and eventually crashed near the intersection of NC 279 and Dick Beam Road.

Shots were fired and the suspect fled on foot, evading police.

Officers then received word the suspect was inside the Creekside Community Market in  Bessemer City.

The armed suspect took hostages inside the store and Gaston County Police fired shots, resulting in fatal injuries to the suspect.

No officers or hostages were injured during the encounter.

Hotel Charlotte was a 13-story luxury hotel in Uptown Charlotte on the corner of Trade and Poplar, originally opened in 1924.

Its official name was “Hotel Charlotte”, but it was also referred to as “Queen Charlotte Hotel” and “White House Inn,” having hosted Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, as well as Elvis Presley; Huey Long; Jack Dempsey and Babe Ruth. Bill Monroe and Roy Acuff even recorded in its 10th-floor studios, and Tommy Dorsey, Guy Lombardo and Kay Kyser performed in its ballroom.

Sadly, Hotel Charlotte closed for business on December 31, 1973, and on July 2, 1979, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In the years following its closure, attempts were made to find developers who could rehabilitate and preserve the structure. However, as the building languished, it was severely vandalized and much of its interior plumbing and wiring stolen by looters.
