Charlotte Smashes MLS Record And Inspires World W/ Acapella National Anthem

0

Over the weekend, the city of Charlotte came together to make Major League Soccer history. During Charlotte FC’s debut game against LA Galaxy at Bank of America Stadium, we gathered a total attendance of 74,479 screaming soccer fans – the highest attendance ever seen at an MLS game.

Our number flew past the previous MLS record of 73,019, set by Atlanta United during the 2018 MLS Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Saturday night’s game in Uptown Charlotte also set another record for the most inspiring national anthem the world has ever seen.

Organizers had commissioned Michelle Brooks-Thompson to sing the national anthem before the match started, but just a few seconds into her performance, technical issues caused her mic to shut off.

The packed crowed responded by erupting in a stadium-sweeping chorus of tear jerking patriotism.

Charlotte FC ultimately lost to the LA Galaxy in a final score of 0-1, but if our fan passion holds up, major league soccer in Charlotte looks to have a very bright future.

Did you attend Saturday’s game?

Six Home Renovation Dos and Don’ts

0

Renovating your home is an excellent choice right now, whether you’re looking to sell your home or simply want to improve it. Even the tiniest changes can make a significant difference and increase the value of your home and allow you to have a considerable return on investment. In addition, many people choose to renovate the house instead of buying a new one because it’s more economical. Nevertheless, renovating can be quite challenging since many factors are to consider before doing so.

Therefore, we made a list of the top six home renovation do’s & don’ts to help you get started, so stick with us, and we’ll show you that home renovating doesn’t have to be so stressful, with some proper planning and basic knowledge.

DO Consider the Regulations Before Starting

You may ask yourself, “What’s the point of this when no one will know what I’m doing with my home?”, but think about it – if you decide to sell your home one day, you’ll have a hard time, to say the least, because your home is not up to code and regulations. That’s why you should do some deep research before starting this project, to ensure that your ideas won’t cause you a headache in the future.

DON’T Renovate All At Once

Assuming that you plan to renovate the entire house from top to bottom, we strongly suggest you take one step at a time instead. Not only that renovating all at once is much more inconvenient than going step by step, but it’s more expensive too. Besides, you don’t want your home to become one big construction site and completely disrupt your life and your household.

Choose Materials That Are Cheap and of High Quality

When planning a home renovation, choosing materials that are both affordable and of high quality can significantly impact the project’s outcome. High-quality materials don’t have to be expensive, and with careful selection, you can find options that offer durability and aesthetic appeal without overspending. For example, when considering siding options, vinyl is a cost-effective material that provides good insulation and comes in various styles, making it a popular choice for many homeowners. In contrast, less expensive options like aluminum siding may seem appealing initially but can be prone to dents and corrosion, leading to higher repair costs over time.

When it comes to roofing, asphalt shingles are a budget-friendly option that offers reasonable protection and longevity. However, some lower-quality asphalt shingles may not perform as well in extreme weather conditions, whereas a more durable option like metal roofing could offer superior longevity and energy efficiency, though it comes at a higher initial cost.

For projects involving exterior walls, pathways, or even garden features, sourcing your materials from a reputable masonry brick supplier BC Brick can ensure you get high-quality bricks that are both affordable and built to last. BC Brick products can be used for creating sturdy, visually appealing walls, accent features, or durable walkways that add both function and beauty to your outdoor space. By choosing wisely, you can balance cost and quality, making your renovation both economical and long-lasting.

DO Add Insulation To Your Home

A well-insulated home is a game-changer, and even though home insulation is a significant investment, you’ll end up saving money in the long run because it reduces heat loss and lowers the energy bills in turn (among many other things). In addition, insulating your home will significantly increase your home’s value, which is something to consider even if you aren’t planning on selling it right now. But since there are so many spots that you should insulate, you need to consider the exterior walls, interior walls, basements, and roof insulation types and choose the adequate one, so we suggest consulting with the professionals.

DON’T Go For The Cheapest Contractor

A choice of contractor is essential because it can make or break your home, literally. As you’re probably aware, low price usually means the low quality of work, and even potential damages that may occur in the future, so you’ll end up spending even more money than you would spend on the most expensive contractors. Always check out the contractor’s history, reviews, and portfolio before signing a contract. Remember that you’re placing your home to someone’s trust, so choose wisely.

DO Set A Budget

Once you hire a contractor, your next step is to do some consulting with the builder, architect, or such, as they will be able to tell you how much funds you should allocate for remodeling and if there’s any space for saving money. Once you set a budget, add some extra just in case something unexpected comes up, and there’s always the chance it will.

DON’T Forget That It Will Be Worth It

Once the renovation begins, it will completely change your routine, and you’ll probably become on edge most of the time. Remember that you’ll need to make some sacrifices, and once the project’s completed, it will be all worth it. Try to stay relaxed and just imagine how great your home will look after the renovation.

How Does the Queen’s Cup Compare to Big UK Horse Racing Events?

0

The Queen’s Cup is the biggest horse racing event in the Charlotte region. The best horses flock to take each other on, much like we see elsewhere around the world, including in the UK.

When it comes to horse racing, the UK is one of the leaders, with huge events that draw worldwide interest. One of those big events is the Cheltenham Festival, loved by local fans but also viewed around the world. Headlining the festival is the Gold Cup, ran on the final day of the meeting and the latest Cheltenham betting lists Galvin alongside A Plus Tard as the +333 joint-favorites. Both horses are from Ireland, which highlights their dominance in this event.

Despite taking place in the UK, many Irish runners descend on the meeting, and last year, they completely dominated proceedings with 23 winners from 28 races at the meeting. Once again, the Irish look to have a strong hand, with the current Prestbury Cup betting odds listing Ireland as -2000 favorites to take home the trophy for winning the most races at the meeting.

Fans from the UK look forward to the Cheltenham Festival all year, just like fans in Charlotte look forward to the Queen’s Cup all year, but how does the event in Charlotte compare, and can it grow using the UK model?

What Can the Queen’s Cup Learn from UK Racing Festivals?

The Queen’s Cup has history, running for over 20 years, and for that reason, it has become part of the racing scene in Charlotte that many will continue to support. But when you compare this one-day event to the Cheltenham Festival, the biggest event in the UK, there is a lot of room for growth.

The Cheltenham Festival is run over four days, with a total of 28 races across those days, meaning it is far more than just one race. At the center of it, the Cheltenham Gold Cup is run on the final day, a race won by Minella Indo back in 2021. However, both on that day, and the previous three days, there are many other exciting events, turning this into more like a carnival of horse racing, rather than just one event.

If the Queen’s Cup wants to grow into something special for horse racing in the USA, this is the path it has to take, with growth in the number of days the event is on for, plus additional quality races to attract fans.

The 2021 Queen’s Cup was live streamed for fans to watch at home, another big move that could be used in the future. Accessibility is key, and again, Cheltenham set the tone for this. Each day at the Cheltenham Festival, the majority of races are available on free-to-air TV, which puts the racing in front of many people.

Streaming may be the best start for the Queen’s Cup, but, ultimately, their goal should be the same, to put their action in front of as many people as possible, to build up interest.

Essential Considerations When Choosing A Container Transportation Firm

0

Ships have been used for many years to move cargo from one place to another. In many respects, it was a natural progression of more basic transportation techniques, such as the horse and cart which gave way to canal boats and trains. Moving things between countries was logically completed by ship; there were no other viable options, although in early times this meant a lot of labour as boxes were carried on and off the ships. With this in mind, it is actually surprising that shipping containers didn’t arrive on the scene until the mid-1950s.

A Quick History Recap

In fact, it was 1956 when Malcolm McLean, in conjunction with Keith Tantlinger created the first intermodal container. It was 8ft tall and 8ft wide and made from corrugated steel. A key part of the design was the addition of a twist-lock mechanism, this was positioned in each corner allowing the container to be attached to a crane and lifted onto the boat. The fact that the container was designed to be heavy enough and sturdy enough not to move on the ship and stay in position while in transit, meant that it could be safely used and then re-used.

The creation of a viable container system meant that custom-designed ships were built to accommodate them, this was effectively the beginning of the container ship which has since grown to become a much larger beast.

There are obvious advantages to containerization:

  • Reduced Loading Time

A container can be loaded by the manufacturer or supplier and dropped off at the docks ready to dispatch, it’s then craned into position in a matter of minutes. This is much faster than arriving with a truckload of boxes that need to be manually moved from the truck to the hold of a ship. In short, container transportation saves you and the shipping company time.

  • Improved Safety

Containers are sealed, although customs have the right to check any container, in general, they are locked shut until they reach their destination, effectively reducing the likelihood of anything going missing while in transit. It’s also easier for the sender to pack the container and ensure there is no possibility of items being damaged, regardless of how rough the sea may get.

  • Identifiable

A container is easy to identify and pass on to the relevant party. This makes it simpler to identify all the parcels and parts sent and then ensure they are received by the right person in one piece.

Choosing a container transport firm should be easy. However, there are a few things you should consider before selecting a container transport company.

Reputation

Potentially the most important consideration when committing to any service provider is how good is their reputation? You’ll want to start by talking to other people that may have used a container transportation firm, that could be friends, colleagues, business managers, or you can even turn to social media.

There will be plenty of people with an opinion regarding your proposed container transportation solution, just remember that it’s very difficult for a firm to satisfy every customer, there will be some negative comments. But, if the majority are positive and genuine then you’re off to a good start.

Of course, you should treat the first couple of container movements as a test run to ensure you are happy with their service.

Types of Container Offered

It’s also important to spend some time looking at what types of containers they offer, not all companies make the same containers available. Before you decide or even review this stage you should think about what you are shipping, particularly its size and shape, as this will allow you to envision the best possible container and verify that the container transportation firm has what you need.

  • Flat rack

The flat rack container has collapsible sides which can be easily folded out of the way, this makes them the best possible choice for shipping items like cars, boats, and large equipment.

  • Open Side

On this type of container, the side of the unit can be opened in one go, creating a large loading space, it makes it much easier for larger loads to be slid into position with the minimum of fuss. This type of container is often used when shipping vegetables.

  • Refrigerated

These don’t really need any explanation, they are sealed containers with standard doors at the end allowing you to add all your produce and the container will maintain the temperature set throughout the journey. It’s the perfect way to keep vegetables and other products at the right temperature while they are being shipped, helping to ensure they arrive as fresh as possible.

  • Open-Top

An open-top container transportation system has no roof on the container. They can’t be easily stacked but they are useful when you need to ship something taller than the average container.

Alongside checking that the container transportation company offers the right type of container you should check on the sizes of the standard containers, you’ll usually find they are 10ft, 20ft, or 40ft long. It’s worth considering which best fits your needs.

Budget

If you’re using container transportation as a one-off then cost is less likely to be important to you. But, if you are looking to create a relationship with the company and ship containers on multiple occasions then you need to consider which company is offering the best price and whether they are worth using.

Don’t forget that the cheapest option is not always the best, you should be checking their satisfaction and success rates, it’s worth paying a little extra for the right service.

Final Thoughts on Container Transportation

The world is becoming greener and people are more aware of the impact of their actions. However, this is unlikely to affect the need for container transportation as it remains the most efficient way of moving items between places.

If you’re looking to use a container transportation firm then do your homework first to ensure you have the one that is best suited to your needs.

Reforms to North Carolina Laws to Allow for Fairer Medical Negligence Rulings

0
Within the next few months, the North Carolina Supreme Court will decide whether a nurse can be held more accountable for a child’s injuries that occurred during heart treatment over 12 years ago.  Based on a precedent dating back to 1932, nurses cannot face liability for medical negligence because they are not expected to be specialists in diagnosis or treatment. This idea is being challenged, since the role of nurses has changed dramatically over the last 90 years, and they are now more highly skilled practitioners. If the precedent is thrown out, the family of the child who experienced serious injuries during treatment could finally settle their claim against the hospital. Taking steps to ensure accountability when medical malpractice is suspected is vital for both patients and health providers, and, through challenging and updating the laws concerning negligence, more victims could reach a favorable outcome in their claims for personal injury.
Changes to Medical Malpractice Proceedings
A senate bill signed into law last summer contained two important changes to medical malpractice cases in North Carolina.  During a case, juries will now be given additional written instruction to help them come to their decisions after listening to often very complex testimony.  In addition, just one judge will be assigned to a case, enabling them to become more familiar with the facts from the start, develop a better understanding of the issues involved and, ultimately, make a fairer judgment once the case comes to court. While these updates should make court rulings more efficient, the whole process of filing a claim can still be overwhelming. In Charlotte, personal injury lawyers at JJS Justice highlight the importance of staying up to date with evolving legislation in complex cases. With the combination of trusted legal advice and more consistent court proceedings, victims of medical malpractice have a greater chance of being awarded the compensation they deserve.
Challenging Contributory Negligence Law
Although now abolished in most states, the common law of contributory negligence is still recognized in North Carolina.  If an injured party is found to have contributed by just 1%  to an accident then they are unable to claim any compensation from the party largely at fault. The rule can apply in medical malpractice claims where a patient’s negligence occurs at the same time as the negligence of a medical practitioner, but it is more commonly upheld in personal injury cases resulting from a traffic accident. Since her daughter was killed while she was walking on the side of a road, one North Carolina mother has been fighting against this law, which left her unable to claim for damages. In response to years of petitioning, a new bill to change the contributory negligence law has been introduced by the North Carolina legislature. The proposed new law called The Victims Fair Treatment Act would deal with injured parties more justly, enabling them to make a claim for compensation even if they are deemed to be partly at fault.
Changing and updating North Carolina’s laws concerning liability in the case of personal injury could mean a fairer outcome for victims of accidents and medical negligence.

NC’s Samaritan’s Purse Setting Up Field Hospital In Ukraine

0

North Carolina-based Samaritan’s Purse is about to set up a 30-bed field hospital in the heart of Ukraine’s war zone.

According to a press release from the charity, their cargo plane took off this morning from Greensboro with the initial physical components of the hospital, as well as a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART), including doctors, nurses, and logistics and set-up personnel.

Once set up, the hospital will include an operating room capable of performing up to 15 surgeries per day, an ICU, ER, pharmacy, as well as an integrated water source and sanitation system. The charity estimates that it’s 50+ in-field staff members will be able to help up to 100 patients per day. The hospital could be operational by next week.

“Ukrainian families are hurting and in desperate need of physical aid and prayer during this difficult time,” said Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse. “We are deploying life-saving medical care to aid people who are suffering. We want to meet the needs of these families in their darkest moments while pointing them to the light and hope of Jesus Christ.”

It’s Time to Start Promoting Health – Op-Ed From UNC Charlotte Professor

0

We’re nearly two years into the covid-19 pandemic, and the defensive measures of mask-wearing, social distancing, and vaccines have been established. Unfortunately, cases are on the rise in some areas and the threat of new variants looms. A quick ending does not seem to be in the cards. It’s high time for the next logical step: promoting individual health.

The CDC website rightly points out the proven benefits of vaccines, masks, and other techniques to stop the spread and reduce the severity of covid-19. Yet it says exactly zero about basic self-care measures that have also been shown to improve outcomes. Researchers have been producing a body of work that shows the importance of proper diet and exercise for protecting against covid-19.

Let’s start with exercise. Exercise has long been known to improve immune function and help protect against viruses. A recent study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine shows physical inactivity is associated with more severe covid outcomes in terms of hospitalization and death. Conversely, moderate exercise such as walking has been shown to reduce severe covid outcomes. Moderate exercise may even play a role in reducing the spread of covid, as exercise can strengthen the viral gateway of the immune system.

Obesity and diabetes are risk factors for poor covid outcomes. A healthy diet can help with these conditions while also strengthening the immune system at the same time. Fruits and vegetables have consistently been shown to improve immunity and are especially recommended for those with underlying health conditions. A proper diet does not have to be complicated either. A recent study from the National Institutes of Health showed that switching to unprocessed foods will naturally decrease calorie intake and lower weight.

There is also emerging evidence of a potential relationship between sunlight and covid outcomes. Covid-19 is less prevalent in countries closer to the equator. A recent lab study in the Journal of Infectious Diseases showed that sunlight may deactivate the SARS-CoV-2 virus on surfaces. While excessive sunlight exposure is damaging, moderate sunlight exposure can stimulate immune function and potentially protect against covid.

It’s time for policymakers to start recommending these basic pro-health measures.  Moderate exercise such as walking, a diet of mainly unprocessed foods, and appropriate sun exposure are all common-sense tools that can help end this pandemic.
