Georgia’s first black-owned brewery, Hippin’ Hops, is expanding to Charlotte, opening a new 3,900 square foot brewery, cigar, and whiskey lounge in the heart of NoDa.

They’ll be opening on the ground floor of Charlotte’s new Bainbridge NoDa development (2509 N Davidson St), featuring; “Good Bar food, games, and ice cold drinks”.

Due to the fact that we already have a million of them, the owners decided to literally name the new brewery, “Another Brewery”.

Kannapolis Man Has Just Been Arrested For Assaulting Police During Jan 6th Capitol Riots

34-year-old Brett Alan Rotella from Kannapolis was arrested on Tuesday (8/29/23) on felony and misdemeanor charges relating to the January 6th insurrection.

Charges include assaulting law enforcement, obstruction during civil disorder, and unlawfully entering restricted buildings, according to the Department of Justice.

The official criminal complaint features numerous images from Jan. 6th videos showing Rotella attacking police.

Authorities say Rotella played a conspicuous role during the riot, pushing police barricades, leading rioters, and entering the Capitol building, known as “the tunnel.” Inside, he engaged physically with the police and utilized a ladder in an attempt to breach a police line.

Rotella was arrested on August 29, 2023, and had his initial court appearance in the Western District of North Carolina. The FBI identified him as BOLO #82 from their seeking information photos. Since January 6, 2021, over 1,106 individuals have been arrested nationwide related to the Capitol breach, with over 350 charged with assaulting law enforcement.

The case is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, with assistance from other relevant departments. Tips related to the case can be directed to the FBI.

CNBC Names North Carolina as America’s Top State for Business

CNBC has just crowned North Carolina as America’s Best State for Business in 2023, marking the second year in a row we were ranked #1 for business. Governor Roy Cooper revealed the honor during a live broadcast at Asheville’s Biltmore Estate with CNBC’s Scott Cohn.

“When we invest in our people, we invest in the foundation of our success,” said Governor Cooper in a press release. “Thanks to our well-trained, dedicated and diverse workforce, North Carolina has been named the top state for business for the second year in a row and it’s important for us to invest in the education and well being of our people to continue our amazing success.”

The award is based on a CNBC study evaluating 86 different factors across ten key areas of competitiveness. North Carolina emerged top in workforce and scored notably well in the economy, technology and innovation, and access to capital categories. This is only the second instance a state has secured the top position two years running in the history of the CNBC rankings. Impressively, North Carolina has made it into the top five states four times since 2017.

Furthermore, this year has seen North Carolina bag Site Selection Magazine’s Prosperity Cup for the third consecutive year, acknowledging the effectiveness of its state-level economic development agencies. The state also secured Area Development magazine’s 2023 Platinum Shovel Award for going above the norm in investment and job creation, and won Business Facilities magazine’s State of the Year award following a remarkable year of economic growth and job creation.

Pure Intentions Coffee Raises Over $42,000 for Cancer Research At Charlotte’s Inaugural Golf Tournament

Today, Charlotte coffee roaster Pure Intentions Coffee announces open registration for the first-ever Fairway for Hope Golf Tournament at Raintree Country Club on Monday, August 21st.

Played in a best-ball format from the white and gold tees, participating golfers can look forward to fun at-hole events and sponsor giveaways. Teams of four can register for $600, which includes a box lunch donated by Sunflour Baking Company, beverages during play for those over 21 years old and a post-round event with food and drink tickets. The tournament is limited to 144 golfers, so players are encouraged to register quickly.

“Last year, we were honored to sponsor the River Rest Fest put on by the Isabella Santos Foundation and Catawba Riverkeeper and became inspired by the overwhelming sense of community we witnessed that day. The legendary Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) just held a grand opening ceremony for their brand new headquarters in Uptown Charlotte.

The move marked the first time the conference changed locations in their 70 years history.

Yesterday’s ceremony was attended by key figures like Mayor Vi Lyles and ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, with flags from the ACC’s 15 member institutions, alongside Charlotte’s city flag, NC’s state flag, and the American flag.

Their new headquarters is now located in the Legacy Union’s Bank of America Tower in Uptown Charlotte (620 S. Tryon St).

The Northlake Mall has been on the decline for years, but today’s announcement signals a true turning point in Charlotte’s once dominant shopping icon.

Spirit Halloween is now open at the Northlake Mall.

After years of Spirit Halloween’s increasing takeover of closed strip malls and former big box powerhouses like Macy’s, Toys R’ Us, Circuit City – the store has become synonymous with Retail Apocalypse and now inspires countless internet memes.

This unveiling follows the departure of notable brands from the mall, such as the Apple Store, Michael Kors, and Buckle. As of now, Northlake Mall boasts an occupancy rate of 85%, including pop-up stores. NC Broadband Division Receives Federal Approval To Invest $1.5 Billion In High-Speed Internet

The N.C. Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) Division of Broadband and Digital Equity’s five-year action plan for the state’s Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program funding has been approved by both the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The division made the draft plan available for public comment earlier this summer, refined it based on comments received, and then submitted to NTIA in late July as part of the process required for North Carolina to access its $1.5 billion federal BEAD funding allocation. A list of partners who provided comments can be found on page 38 of the final plan.

“The development of this plan will allow us to fully leverage our federal BEAD funding to connect all North Carolinians to affordable, reliable high-speed internet service,” said NCDIT Deputy Secretary for Broadband and Digital Equity Nate Denny. “Thank you to all our partners who provided input to help ensure we are working strategically to reach unserved areas, promote digital equity and close our state’s digital divide.”

The Division of Broadband and Digital Equity’s recent challenges to the Federal Communications Commission’s National Broadband Map aided in surfacing 115,000 additional North Carolina homes and businesses that do not have access to high-speed internet, adding more new unserved locations to the map through this process than any other state. These additions increased North Carolina’s funding allocation from the BEAD program.

The division is also developing a draft state digital equity plan that will be posted for public comment later this year before being submitted to NTIA. The state’s initial BEAD proposal is due to NTIA in December, and the BEAD challenge process to determine eligible locations will take place in 2024. Both the BEAD and digital equity plans will be implemented for the five-year period from 2024 to 2028.

The Division of Broadband and Digital Equity will host a Q3 BEAD and digital equity update webinar on workforce planning Monday, Sept. 18 from 2 to 3 p.m. Advance registration is required. More details on the state’s broadband workforce planning are available at ncbroadband.gov/workforce.
