Massive G4 Solar Storm Could Bring The Northern Lights Back Down To The Carolinas Tonight

The sun shot out a massive M8.2 flare on Friday night, which is about to cause the most widespread northern lights display since 2024, according to NOAA. Charged particles from the eruption are expected to reach Earth by Sunday night into Monday morning, possibly extending aurora visibility into the Carolinas.

NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center confirmed this morning that the geomagnetic conditions reached G4 this morning.

The KP index is a logarithmic 0–9 scale that measures global geomagnetic activity, with any value above 5 indicating a severe geomagnetic storm.

According to the University of Alaska, the KP index is now peaking at 8.0 and will continue to throughout tonight into tomorrow morning, offering early risers a chance to see the phenomenon.

If you want to get your own shots of the aurora, you’ll need a long-exposure camera. Go to a very dark place where you have an unobstructed view toward the northern sky. The best place would be a remote mountain with north-facing views.

You can find the dark spots in your area using the official light pollution map here.

Happy aurora hunting!

What To Ask Before Signing A Student Housing Lease

Signing a student housing lease can be a significant commitment that can impact academic success, finances, and overall living experience. Many students enter agreements without fully understanding the terms, leading to potential issues. To avoid costly mistakes, it’s essential to ask the right questions before putting pen to paper.

Read on to learn the questions to ask before signing a student housing lease.

Understanding Lease Terms and Conditions

Before signing a housing lease, looking for the perfect student accommodation is crucial to ensure a comfortable education journey. For example, for female students attending institutions like Brigham Young University-Idaho (BYU-I), finding approved BYUI women’s housing is a priority. It’s best to choose one that meets university standards and provides a safe living environment.

However, even with reputable housing, tenants must thoroughly review lease agreements to ensure they meet their needs. A lease is a legally binding contract, and failing to comprehend its clauses can result in unexpected penalties or restrictions. Some key questions to clarify include:

What Is the Lease Duration?

Most student housing leases align with the academic year, typically from August to April or May. However, some landlords require a full 12-month lease, which may conflict with summer plans. Hence, students anticipating internships, study abroad, or extended breaks should confirm if subletting is allowed to avoid paying rent for unused space.

Are There Penalties for Early Termination?

Student life can typically bring unexpected changes, such as transferring schools, financial hardships, or family emergencies that may necessitate breaking a lease early. Before signing, tenants must clarify if they’ll owe the full remaining rent, a fixed termination fee, or if lease reassignment is an option. Understanding these terms can help prevent costly surprises and ensure flexibility for unforeseen circumstances. Tenants are also advised to review early exit clauses carefully.

What Is Included in the Rent?

When comparing student housing options, it’s critical to confirm exactly what’s included in the monthly rent. Some properties offer all-inclusive pricing covering utilities, high-speed internet, and parking, while others bill these separately. This distinction can significantly impact affordability. For example, a USD$600 rent could effectively become USD$750 with added expenses. Requesting a written breakdown of all potential costs can prevent financial strain and ensure accurate budget planning throughout the lease term.

Evaluating Financial Responsibilities

Beyond monthly rent, additional costs can strain a student’s budget. Some important financial questions include:

Is a Security Deposit Required?

Security deposits serve as financial protection for landlords, usually matching one month’s rent. Before paying, tenants must understand the property’s specific refund policies, such as what constitutes damage versus normal wear, required cleaning standards, and documentation procedures. Some landlords can also prohibit applying the deposit toward final rent payments, while others may allow it with certain conditions.

Are There Additional Fees?

Hidden fees can dramatically increase the true cost of student housing. Application fees, monthly maintenance surcharges for common areas, and steep late payment penalties can strain tight budgets. Students should demand a comprehensive fee schedule in writing, including less obvious costs like trash removal fees, key replacement charges, or amenity access fees that may apply only during certain semesters.

What Are the Payment Deadlines?

Late rent payments typically trigger immediate penalties, often approximately 5-10% of the monthly rent, and repeated delays may be reported to credit agencies, damaging a student’s financial standing. Payment protocols can vary widely as some landlords only accept checks, while others use online portals with processing delays. Students should also verify exact due dates, grace periods, and whether payments must clear by specific times to avoid fees.

Assessing Property Conditions and Maintenance

A well-maintained living space can contribute to a positive college experience. Before signing, tenants should inquire by asking the following questions:

How Are Maintenance Requests Handled?

A well-defined maintenance protocol is essential for habitable student housing. Tenants should inquire about emergency versus routine repair procedures, average response times for different issues, and whether residents are ever charged for repairs. Some properties use in-house staff while others contract third-party services, knowing this can help set realistic expectations for resolution timelines.

Who Is Responsible for Cleaning Common Areas?

Shared student housing can become messy when chores are left undefined. Properties with professional cleaning typically service common areas weekly but may charge extra for deep cleaning at move-out. Student-run units should establish written cleaning schedules during the lease signing, specifying who cleans what and how often.

Are Appliances and Furnishings Included?

Fully furnished student housing offers convenience but requires careful inspection. Before signing, tenants should thoroughly document all included furniture and appliances, taking timestamped photos of any stains, dents, or malfunctions. Many leases hold residents responsible for damages regardless of when they occurred.

Clarifying House Rules and Restrictions

Student housing often comes with specific regulations. Some key questions include:

Are Guests Allowed Overnight?

Restrictive guest policies in student leases often cap overnight stays and may require advance registration of visitors. These clauses can particularly impact students in long-distance relationships or those hosting families during graduation. Violations can also trigger fines or lease termination.

Is Subletting Permitted?

Many student leases prohibit subletting without written landlord consent, creating complications for study abroad plans. Approval processes often involve credit checks and formal applications for the subtenant. Some properties also charge administrative fees for sublet arrangements, while others only allow lease reassignments.

Is There Noise or Quiet Hours?

Student housing near academic hubs typically implements strict quiet hours, often extending from 10 PM to 8 AM daily during finals week, with amplified enforcement including noise-monitoring systems. These policies, while restrictive, can create optimal study conditions by prohibiting loud gatherings, amplified music, or disruptive hallway activity.

Reviewing Safety and Security Measures

A secure living environment is non-negotiable. Some prospective tenants should ask the following:

What Security Features Are in Place?

Prioritizing security features in student housing can significantly reduce risks. Gated communities with keycard entry limit unauthorized access, while 24/7 surveillance cameras in hallways and parking areas can provide monitoring. Motion-activated lighting in outdoor spaces can enhance nighttime visibility, and deadbolts on individual bedroom doors offer personal protection, especially crucial in shared units where roommates may host unfamiliar guests.

How Are Emergencies Handled?

Responsible landlords supply detailed emergency protocols including evacuation maps, fire extinguisher locations, and 24/7 contact numbers for property managers. These plans should outline procedures for different scenarios, such as where to assemble during fires, how to report suspicious activity, or who authorizes emergency repairs.

Confirming Lease Flexibility and Renewal Policies

Students’ plans may change, so understanding lease flexibility is crucial. Some questions to ask include:

Can the Lease Be Renewed Easily?

Many student housing leases contain automatic renewal clauses that convert to month-to-month or full-term leases if tenants don’t provide written notice 60-90 days before expiration. This “evergreen clause” often catches students off-guard, legally binding them to another semester or year.

Are There Options for Room Changes?

Roommate disputes can happen frequently in student housing, making transfer policies crucial. Many properties allow unit changes for documented conflicts or safety concerns, although they often charge relocation fees. Some require proof of mediation attempts first. Students should also verify if transfers are subject to availability and whether they’d incur rent differentials for upgraded units since policies can vary widely between management companies.

Final Steps Before Signing

Before finalizing a lease, students should consider touring the property in person. Photos can be misleading. An in-person visit can reveal true conditions. Tenants should read every clause carefully as legal jargon can obscure important details. Seeking clarification on ambiguous terms can also prevent disputes. Lastly, tenants should get everything in writing. Verbal agreements hold little weight, and all promises from landlords should be documented.

Conclusion

Signing a student housing lease requires due diligence to avoid unfavorable terms. By asking the right questions above, students can secure affordable housing supporting their academic journey. Whether considering campus housing options or other accommodations, informed decisions can lead to a smoother, stress-free living experience.

How Thoughtful Design Reduces Stress in Unexpected Ways

You walk into a room and instantly feel on edge, though nothing obvious is wrong. Maybe the lighting is too harsh, or there’s clutter in your line of sight. Now imagine the opposite—a space where the air feels softer, the light is warm, and everything you need is where it should be. Those small design details aren’t random—they shape how your nervous system responds to the environment around you.

Design influences more than aesthetics; it affects how we move, focus, and emotionally respond to a space. The textures we touch, the way tools are placed, and even how sound travels through a room can either add to our stress or quietly help it fade. Thoughtful adjustments—even subtle ones—can shift a space from draining to calming without needing a complete overhaul.

Small Comforts That Cut Down on Daily Annoyances

Smart design makes everyday items more comfortable without much effort. Take gold cartilage earrings with flat backs—they get rid of pressure points, making them a great choice for people who wear headphones or hats often. Details like this show a real understanding of daily needs and offer easy fixes to little annoyances.

These small but thoughtful upgrades can really improve your daily routine. For example, replacing a metal zipper pull with a fabric one can stop it from clinking loudly when you walk. Try adding small comforts to your space—whether through accessories or everyday tools—and your day-to-day life can feel a bit smoother.

Kitchen Setups That Make Life Easier

The way a kitchen is arranged has a big impact on how smoothly cooking goes. Keeping spatulas near the stove and pots close to your prep area helps everything flow more easily. Spices and oils in easy-to-reach spots reduce stress and make the space feel more functional. Prioritizing practicality over clutter can turn meal prep into something you actually enjoy.

A well-organized kitchen also saves time during rushed mornings. A weekly meal plan and designated spots for your gear can streamline your routine. Labeling drawers—like “tea towels” or “measuring cups”—makes it easier to find things without second-guessing.

Chairs That Let You Move, Not Just Sit Up Straight

Many offices pick chairs for how they look rather than how they feel. This can cause stiffness and discomfort. Standard office chairs often limit movement, which isn’t great for long hours at a desk. On the other hand, more flexible options—like saddle stools or mesh-backed chairs—let you shift your weight and change position. This makes the space feel less rigid and more active.

Designs that let you move around a bit can improve comfort and help you focus better. If you choose seating that lets people adjust their posture, you’ll create a more comfortable and appealing workspace—especially during long stretches of screen time when shifting your weight or leaning back can relieve pressure on your lower back.

Controlling Noise Through Smart Design Choices

Too much noise makes it hard to concentrate and adds stress. Spaces without sound planning can lead to feeling worn out. Soft items like rugs, curtains, and padded furniture help absorb sound, making things feel quieter and calmer. Fabric panels can also cut noise while adding a nice touch to the room.

Dividing large open areas into smaller zones can help reduce distractions. Simple changes like room dividers or sound panels can create peaceful spots. Adding a thick area rug under your desk, for instance, can soften footstep sounds and make your workspace feel more grounded. Bringing more textiles into your space can help make it a quiet place where you can relax and focus.

Lighting That Helps You Feel Better, Not More Stressed

Lighting sets the tone for a space, offering both visibility and comfort. Warm bulbs create a cozy feel and soften a room’s edges, while indirect lights reduce glare and eye strain, making it easier to stay relaxed. Layering different light sources helps you shift smoothly from work mode to downtime.

Like choosing the right paint color, thoughtful lighting can shift a room’s mood. A small table lamp with a warm-toned bulb by your bed can make winding down easier. Matching lights to real needs creates a more balanced space, and dimmer switches add flexibility throughout the day.

Small changes in your environment can quietly reshape how each day feels. Softer light, quieter textures, and easier-to-reach essentials can take the edge off without needing a big renovation. Pay attention to the things that frustrate or slow you down—then adjust them to match how you actually live. A drawer that opens smoothly, a chair that moves with you, or a warm lamp at dusk can shift your whole mood. Comfort doesn’t need to be complicated. In the end, it’s not about perfection—it’s about creating a space that feels like a quiet exhale at the end of a long day.

How To Recognize Early Symptoms Of Common Childhood Illnesses

0

Recognizing the early symptoms of common childhood illnesses is crucial for timely intervention and effective treatment. Children, especially those in daycare or school settings, are prone to infections due to their developing immune systems and close contact with peers. Parents and caregivers who can identify early warning signs can seek medical attention promptly, reducing complications and preventing the spread of common illness.

Read on to learn how parents can recognize early symptoms of common childhood illnesses.

Understanding the Importance of Early Detection

Identifying illnesses in children at the earliest stage can lead to quicker recovery and reduce discomfort. Many common pediatric conditions, such as ear infections, strep throat, and respiratory viruses, can respond well to treatment when addressed promptly. Early intervention can also prevent complications, shorten illness duration, and limit the spread of contagious diseases. Parents and caregivers who recognize initial symptoms can seek timely medical care, ensuring better health outcomes for their children.

Furthermore, seeking help from facilities like Just 4 Kids can be an excellent move as they offer specialized on-site testing to quickly diagnose and address health concerns in children.

Common Cold: More Than Just a Runny Nose

The common cold, frequently caused by rhinoviruses, is one of the most prevalent childhood illnesses. Initial symptoms typically begin with nasal congestion and a runny nose, where clear mucus may gradually thicken and change color. Sneezing, mild coughing, and a low-grade fever are also common early indicators. Children may experience a mild sore throat, leading to increased irritability.

Although colds are generally harmless and resolved on their own, symptoms persisting beyond 10 days could signal a secondary bacterial infection, such as sinusitis or an ear infection, requiring medical evaluation. Proper rest, hydration, and symptom management can help most children recover comfortably.

Influenza: Recognizing the Flu Before It Worsens

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, strikes suddenly with more intensity than a common cold. The illness often announces itself with a high fever (typically above 101°F or 38.3°C), which serves as one of the earliest and most telling signs. Children can frequently experience pronounced body aches, chills, and muscle soreness, along with overwhelming fatigue that distinguishes the flu from milder respiratory infections. A dry, persistent cough and headaches also frequently accompany these symptoms.

Unlike colds, the flu can escalate quickly, potentially leading to serious complications such as pneumonia, particularly in young children or those with underlying health conditions. Pediatricians can emphasize the importance of early detection, as antiviral medications are most effective when administered within the first 48 hours of symptom onset.

Lastly, vaccination remains the best preventive measure, but recognizing these warning signs ensures timely intervention to reduce severity and duration of illness. Parents should monitor for difficulty breathing or prolonged fever, which warrant immediate medical attention.

Strep Throat: When a Sore Throat Needs Attention

Strep throat, a bacterial infection caused by Group A Streptococcus, demands prompt antibiotic treatment to prevent serious complications. The illness typically begins abruptly with an intense sore throat, making swallowing painful and difficult. Upon examination, the tonsils appear markedly red and swollen, often dotted with white pus-filled patches.

Unlike viral sore throats, strep usually can present with high fever (exceeding 101°F/38.3°C) without accompanying cold symptoms like nasal congestion or cough. Tender, enlarged lymph nodes in the neck can further distinguish this bacterial infection. Left untreated, strep throat can trigger rheumatic fever, a dangerous inflammatory condition affecting the heart, joints, and nervous system.

Other potential complications include kidney inflammation and abscess formation. Rapid antigen tests or throat cultures can provide definitive diagnosis, enabling timely antibiotic therapy that reduces contagion and symptom duration while preventing long-term consequences. Parents should also seek medical evaluation when these hallmark symptoms appear, particularly if the child has been exposed to strep or shows signs of dehydration from throat pain.

Ear Infections: Spotting the Hidden Discomfort

Ear infections (otitis media) can frequently develop after upper respiratory infections, as bacteria or viruses migrate to the middle ear. Young children often demonstrate discomfort by persistently tugging at their ears or rubbing them against surfaces. Increased irritability, especially when lying down due to pressure changes, and bouts of unexplained crying are common red flags.

In some cases, yellowish fluid drainage may appear, signaling a possible eardrum rupture – which, while alarming, often relieves pain temporarily. The accumulated fluid behind the eardrum can typically cause mild, temporary hearing impairment, noticeable when children stop responding to soft sounds or repeatedly ask for words to be repeated.

While many cases resolve independently, recurrent infections warrant medical evaluation, as persistent fluid buildup can affect speech development and lead to permanent hearing deficits if left unaddressed. Pediatricians may also recommend tympanometry tests or prescribe antibiotics for bacterial cases, with surgical intervention considered for chronic situations.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease: Identifying the Rash

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD), caused primarily by Coxsackievirus A16, is a highly contagious viral infection predominantly affecting children under 5 years. The illness typically begins with a mild fever (101-103°F) and sore throat, followed within 1-2 days by the development of painful oral ulcers on the tongue, gums, and inner cheeks that may make eating and drinking difficult. A distinctive rash then appears on the palms, soles, and sometimes buttocks, starting as flat red spots that often progress to small blisters with a grayish center.

While generally mild, the infection can spread easily through direct contact with nasal secretions, saliva, blister fluid, or stool. Dehydration is the most common complication due to painful mouth sores. No specific treatment also exists beyond symptom management, such as offering cool liquids, soft foods, and acetaminophen for discomfort.

Lastly, parents should monitor for signs of dehydration or high fever persisting beyond 3 days, which may indicate rare complications like viral meningitis. The illness typically runs its course in 7-10 days, though the virus may shed on stool for weeks. Some preventive measures include rigorous handwashing and disinfecting contaminated surfaces.

Asthma: Early Warning Signs of Breathing Trouble

Asthma flare-ups in children typically occur after exposure to triggers like respiratory infections, allergens, or exercise. The earliest warning signs include a persistent dry cough that worsens at night or after physical activity. Parents may also notice a characteristic high-pitched wheezing sound, particularly when the child exhales.

Breathing typically becomes visibly labored, with rapid, shallow breaths that may cause the child to instinctively limit their activities. Many young patients describe an uncomfortable “tight band” sensation around their chest. These symptoms can result from airway inflammation and bronchospasms that narrow breathing passages.

As such, early intervention with prescribed rescue inhalers (bronchodilators) can help prevent progression to severe attacks requiring emergency care. Parents should also monitor for symptoms worsening after colds or during allergy seasons, as well as increased nighttime awakenings due to coughing. Keeping an asthma diary to track symptoms, peak flow measurements, and medication use can also help optimize long-term control. While asthma can’t be cured, proper management allows most children to maintain normal activity levels and prevent dangerous exacerbations.

Gastroenteritis: Stomach Flu Symptoms to Watch For

Gastroenteritis, commonly referred to as stomach flu, typically begins with sudden nausea and vomiting, often followed within hours by watery diarrhea. Children experience crampy abdominal pain that comes in intense waves, frequently preceding bowel movements. A low-grade fever may accompany these symptoms, although a high fever suggests a more serious infection.

Furthermore, the greatest risk in pediatric cases is dehydration, manifested by decreased tear production, sunken eyes, dry lips, and reduced urine output. Lethargy or irritability may indicate advancing dehydration. While viral cases resolve in 3-7 days, oral rehydration solutions given in small, frequent amounts can help maintain electrolyte balance.

Also, children should avoid sugary drinks and dairy during acute phases. Seeking medical attention if vomiting persists beyond 24 hours, blood appears in stool, or dehydration signs worsen is crucial. Most children recover with home care, but infants under 6 months require closer monitoring due to rapid fluid loss. Proper handwashing remains crucial to prevent spread, especially in daycare settings where rotavirus and norovirus circulate easily.

Allergies vs. Colds: Distinguishing the Differences

While allergies and colds both cause sneezing and nasal congestion, key differences can help parents tell them apart. For instance, allergic reactions continue uninterrupted as long as the child encounters triggers like pollen or pet dander, whereas cold symptoms typically improve within a week. Fevers never accompany allergies but often occur with viral colds. Allergies produce thin, clear nasal discharge that remains constant, while colds initially cause watery mucus that thickens and may discolor. Itchy, watery eyes can also strongly suggest allergies rather than infection.

Tracking symptom patterns and potential exposures can help identify allergic triggers, enabling avoidance strategies or appropriate antihistamine use. Unlike colds, allergy symptoms often respond quickly to allergen removal or medication. Seasonal recurrence at the same time each year also points to allergies. Recognizing these distinctions can prevent unnecessary antibiotic use for viral colds while ensuring proper allergy management.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Certain symptoms warrant immediate medical care. These include:

  • High fever lasting more than 3 days
  • Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
  • Severe dehydration (sunken eyes, no tears, extreme fatigue)
  • Rash accompanied by fever

Timely consultation with a pediatrician can also ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.

Takeaway

Recognizing early symptoms of common childhood illnesses allows for prompt treatment and better outcomes. By keeping the information mentioned above in mind, parents can help their children recover faster and avoid complications.

Charlotte to Pay CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings $305K in Settlement

Charlotte will pay Police Chief Johnny Jennings $305,000 in a settlement that includes severance, legal fees, and pension-boosting bonuses.

The city released the agreement this week after State Auditor David Boliek urged Mayor Vi Lyles to make it public. Jennings will receive $175,000 to avoid suing the city over threats he received from former City Council member Tariq Bokhari during a dispute over officer safety gear.

Although no lawsuit was filed, the city will also pay Jennings $25,000 in legal expenses. These payments — totaling $200,000 — are not pension eligible.

However, the agreement includes a $14,016 retroactive raise for 2025 and a $45,699 retention bonus, both of which will count toward his pension. Jennings also receives 40 additional vacation days valued at $45,285.

His 2025 salary is $280,000. The $305,000 package includes a severance payment due by January 31, 2026, following his official retirement.

First Rabies Case of 2025 Confirmed in Mecklenburg County

Charlotte’s first confirmed rabies case was just detected in the Mint Hill area.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control said the infected raccoon was located near Mintbrook Drive in the 28227 zip code. Officials confirmed no human exposure, though one domestic pet came into contact with the rabid animal.

A countywide rabies alert was scheduled to be issued to residents near the area at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Mecklenburg County Health Department is coordinating the response.

Last year, our county saw a total of 14 rabies cases, with Charlotte’s Wildwood, Hickory Ridge, and Mint Hill areas having had the most repeated rabies cases every year since 2020. Officials urged pet owners to ensure rabies vaccinations are current. North Carolina law requires dogs, cats, and ferrets to be vaccinated by four months of age and kept up to date.

To help keep pets protected, Mecklenburg hosts free rabies vaccination clinics on the second Saturday of each month at the Charlotte Vehicle Operations Center on Beam Road. The clinic runs from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., and pet owners must bring a valid ID to receive the free one-year vaccine.

For questions about potential human exposures, residents can call 980-314-9198.
