The statistic that built this entire product category came from a 2012 sales pitch. A company called Preptel claimed that 75% of resumes are never seen by human eyes, published no methodology behind it, and went out of business in 2013. Preptel sold resume optimisation services. The number survived the company by more than a decade, passing from one article to the next until nobody was checking where it started.

That matters because eight tools now sell you a score against a screening process that mostly doesn’t work the way the score assumes. Something does filter your application before a person reads it, but it isn’t a keyword tally.

What an ATS does with your resume

An ATS is a database with a form attached. It runs your document through a parser that tries to pull structured fields out of it, name, email, employers, titles, dates, skills, then stores those fields so a recruiter can search and filter the pile later. That’s the whole mechanism.

Greenhouse applies no automatic content filtering at all. Workday parses into fields that recruiters query, and doesn’t score or reject on keywords. The one thing that does reject you automatically is the knockout question, the work authorisation or minimum experience or location field you fill in yourself on the form, and around 84% of recruiters use them. In a survey of 25 recruiters, only two said their system auto-rejected for anything beyond those. Published by Enhancv, which sells resume tools, so the finding cuts against the seller’s own interest.

Two failure modes remain real. A parser can mangle your document, in which case a recruiter searching for a job title you actually held won’t surface you. And a human can read your resume and pass. Neither is fixed by a percentage.

1. Aiapply

AIApply tailors the resume and cover letter per role and runs a scan before anything is submitted, which is the sequence that matters more than the score it produces. it’s priced against the middle of this list while doing a job most of the others don’t attempt, which is putting the tailored document into the application itself.

Rezi is the best value on the list if you’ll use it for more than five months, because the $149 lifetime licence replaces a $29 monthly subscription permanently. • Jobscan

Jobscan is the most expensive per month at $49.95, dropping to about $30 on the quarterly plan, and it’s the most honest about what it sells. Its own documentation describes the Match Rate as a diagnostic rather than an employer-issued ATS result. Five free scans a month never expire, which is enough to check your highest-priority applications and skip the subscription entirely.

• Teal

Teal is a tracker first and a resume tool second. The free tier keeps unlimited job tracking and unlimited resume versions permanently, but the AI allowance is a single one-off grant of ten bullet points, two summaries and two cover letters, not a monthly refill, and the match score sits behind Teal+. Watch the billing options, because $13 a week works out around $56 a month against the $29 monthly plan.

• PitchMeAI

PitchMeAI costs $22 a month and adds something the resume-only tools don’t, which is finding a verified contact for the hiring manager and helping you write to them. Given that a parsed resume sits in a database until someone searches it, a direct email is a more reliable route to being read than any score improvement.

1. Resume Worded

Resume Worded is the priciest at $49 a month, or about $19 if you commit to a year at $229. What you’re paying for is line-by-line feedback on bullet points, which is genuine editing help rather than keyword matching. The free score is worth running once.

• Enhancv

Enhancv starts at $24.99 a month and falls to $13.33 on the semiannual plan, with job-specific match scoring aimed at experienced candidates. Its templates are the most designed on this list, which is a reason for caution covered below.

• Kickresume

Kickresume has the most generous free tier and the sharpest catch: the ATS checker is premium-only, at $24 a month or roughly $8 on the annual plan. Students and teachers get six months of Premium free, which makes it the obvious pick for anyone still at university.

Why the match score is worth less than the price

A match score compares your resume against one job description and reports overlap. That’s a useful editing prompt, since it catches the case where you’ve described yourself as a “growth lead” and the posting says “demand generation manager”, and a recruiter filtering on the posting’s language won’t find you.

What it can’t do is predict an outcome, because no major system is scoring you that way. Chasing a higher number past the point of accuracy produces a document stuffed with the posting’s phrasing, which reads badly to the person who eventually opens it. Recruiters do read these. Estimates from recruiters themselves put the share of applications seen by a human well above 90%, and once your resume is in front of one, the ordinary things decide the outcome: relevant experience near the top, a document short enough to finish, and how you handle the background check and the interview that follow.

Use the score to find missing vocabulary you legitimately have. Stop at the point where you’d be claiming something you can’t discuss in an interview.

The formatting failures that are real

Parser quality varies more than the tools admit. Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby are forgiving. Workday and Taleo are not, and those two are common in large enterprises, which is where a mangled parse costs you most.

The failures worth preventing are structural. Multi-column layouts get read across the columns rather than down them, so your job titles interleave with your skills list. Text inside headers and footers is frequently dropped. Tables can survive or collapse depending on the parser. Graphics, skill rating bars and icons carry no text at all, so anything expressed only as a chart is invisible in the database.

This is the argument against the designed templates that Enhancv and Kickresume are known for. A single-column document with plain section headings, real dates, and no text trapped in a graphic will parse cleanly everywhere. What to actually do

If you’re applying at volume, pay for tailoring rather than scoring, because rewriting per role is the part that takes hours you don’t have. If you’re applying to a short list, pay for editing feedback instead and write each one yourself. Build that short list deliberately rather than from whatever the job board surfaced first, because a role that fits the way you actually want to live is the one worth the extra hour of editing.

And answer the knockout questions carefully. Work authorisation, notice period, salary and location are the fields that genuinely reject you without a human involved, and no resume tool touches them.
