South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster is preparing to dispatch South Carolina National Guard (SCNG) troops to Texas in an initiative aimed at securing the US-Mexico border following the expiration of Title 42. This move comes in response to a request from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and after a border security meeting held in Austin, Texas, on May 22, that Governor McMaster attended along with other state leaders.

SCNG, the primary reserve military force for South Carolina, is comprised of both Army and Air National Guard units and is recognized for their work in disaster response and defense missions. They have a history of collaborations with various states for inter-state emergencies and this marks another milestone in their efforts to provide national security.

The border security meeting convened by Texas Governor Greg Abbott was also attended by a total of eight other governors, including Sarah Huckabee Sanders from Arkansas, Brad Little from Idaho, Kim Reynolds from Iowa, Tate Reeves from Mississippi, Jim Pillen from Nebraska, Kevin Stitt from Oklahoma, Bill Lee from Tennessee, and Glenn Youngkin from Virginia.

While the North Carolina National Guard is not directly involved in this effort, they share a similar structure and mission with SCNG. Comprised of Army and Air National Guard components, they also support both state and federal requirements, including disaster relief, defense readiness, and support to civil authorities.

Details regarding the upcoming SCNG mission, including the specific number of troops that will be deployed, are yet to be confirmed and will be finalized over the next few weeks. The deployment is projected to occur by July 1, according to Governor McMaster’s office.
