A no swim advisory has been issued for part of Lake Wylie after more than 69,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into a cove on the Mecklenburg County side.

The advisory affects the area near Old Oleandor Drive and MacGregor Lane in the Palisades community. Officials are urging residents and pet owners to stay out of the water until further notice.

According to Charlotte Water, the spill was caused by a pipe failure at a lift station.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water crews are now collecting water samples to test for bacteria and assess potential health risks.

Sewage spills can introduce harmful bacteria and contaminants into waterways, increasing the risk of illness for anyone who comes into contact with the water.
